Melbourrne, Australia future rap duo Teether & Kuya Neil return with 9 song mixtape STRESSOR out now on Chapter Music. The mixtape has features from Sydney rapper Sevy, Melbourne producer/vocalist zk King (aka acclaimed author Jamie Marina Lau) and frequent Teether collaborator Realname. STRESSOR comes after the release of lead single ‘RENO‘ in mid-January and arrives with accompanying visuals this week directed by Kalanjay Dhir.
Cover art for STRESSOR was made by Naarm producer Endless Prowl (a member of Plea Unit with Teether) using OpenAI prompts “Malawi and Filipino man looking over city.”
When rapper Teether & producer Kuya Neil began to collaborate in late 2020, two powerful forces in the Melbourne underground came together to create something rare and special.
The duo signed to Chapter Music and released 8 song mixtape GLYPH in late 2021, with airplay across triple j, Unearthed, Double J, NTS, Dublab, FBi Radio, Triple R, RTR and PBS, plus writeups via Brooklyn Vegan, NME, Troublejuice, Tone Deaf, Acclaim, Beat, Verve and elsewhere. Four songs from GLYPH were also featured in the recent Netflix hit series Heartbreak High.
Teether & Kuya have since performed at BIGSOUND, Melbourne Music Week, RISING, Meadow, Vivid Sydney and Parramatta Lanes, supporting the likes of Shabazz Palaces, Stas Thee Boss and RP Boo. Teether also supports Armand Hammer around Australia in March 2023.
Teether has a deep dive catalogue of solo releases to his name, largely released via the X Amount collective of which he is a founding member, including 2021’s acclaimed MACHONA. He has also collaborated with billy woods, Don Glori, Agung Mango, Alice Skye, DJ PGZ, Two Birds, Nikodimos and many more.
Kuya Neil is just as prolific. His CV ranges from production for the likes of Bayang the Bushranger, Papaphilia, zk King, Mirasia and Various Asses, to his work with Melbourne Sound School.
Together, Teether & Kuya Neil make future-focused rap informed by everything from experimental sound art to modern club styles like footwork, gqom and bass music. Teether’s nonchalant but vivid words infuse Neil’s hyper- modern production.
