In September of this year New Zealand’s The Black Seeds released their highly anticipated sixth studio album Fabric. The album reached #3 on the US Billboard Reggae Charts, #3 on the ARIA Jazz & Blues Charts and #4 on New Zealand’s Album Charts – drawing acclaim from critics and fans around the globe.

The South Pacific reggae-soul legends have shared the length and breadth of their luscious and diverse new album – including the anthemic summer tune’Better Days’, the dance heavy ‘Freakin’ and their brand new track ‘Back To You’ (read about it here in the Huffington Post premiere) with sold-out appearances across their homeland over  the past month.

While firmly based in the island grooves that inspired the birth of the band nearly two decades ago, The Black Seeds’ sound casts a wide net, layering funk, soul, Afrobeat, and other eclectic elements over their dub/reggae foundations. Guitarist/vocalist Barnaby Weir describes their sound as “contemporary groove music with influences from soul and funk and reggae rhythms.”

Fabric is a twelve-track album of bold, groove-heavy tunes that perfectly captures The Black Seeds’ characteristic brand of reggae-funk fusion.  Musically, there is a grand expansiveness that sets over the collective of tracks on Fabric, allowing for each song to breathe and exist on its own, but also comfortably within the context of the wider picture. In other words, it is a prolific and multi-faceted mix of moods, feelings and stylistic influences, all brought together by the core reggae sound of The Black Seeds.

Underneath the genre fusing, there is a physically infectious kinetic energy in the album. There are times when it dips into a nostalgic homage to the late 70s/early 80s R&B and analogue funk era with songs like ‘Freakin’, or the bass-heavy groove of ‘Everybody Knows’.

A socio-political conscience shines through on tracks like the striking ‘Beleza’ (which features the voice of ‘the father of linguistics’, Noam Chomsky) that sings “It’s only a matter of time, Before you spend your money and lose your mind, people of this world let’s listen, don’t play a fool to the system.’’  The mesmerizing ‘Lost In The Bush’ takes The Black Seeds sound down a sci-fi avenue, fusing the usual reggae ingredients with heavy synths to morph into a squelchy grimy strut, while the hypnotic ‘Lightning Strikes’ takes a melancholic turn with its spacey reverberated horns. Another standout on the album is the deep, dub heavy love song found in the title track.

But where there is darkness, one only needs to turn on the light. And in classic Black Seeds fashion, the light reaches in through with the warm affirmations of Weir and Weetman’s words, adding a classic element to this new Black Seeds record. The uplifting album opener ‘Better Days’ ensures us that “better days are coming, lonely nights are leaving”, while tracks like ‘The Weaver’ remind us that love will conquer all pain.  Overall Fabric shows The Black Seeds’limitless creative energy for what it is – always moving forward and progressing without compromising the soul of who they are, while always remaining conscious of the current world around them.

The Black Seeds have officially announced what we’ve all been waiting for… This November, the almighty 8-piece will be bringing it to a town near you onboard their nationwide Australian album tour. To celebrate the news today they’ve shared a video for single ‘Back To You.’

Known for an electrifying live show, and having just returned from a successful tour of Canada & the US,The Black Seeds are set to play 8 dates across the tasman in celebration of new album, Fabric outFriday 8 September via Remote Control. Full tour dates and ticket links are below.

Their latest single ‘Back To You’ is a tribute to old relationships revived and staying true, set over bubbly rhythmic stabs. Made with the support of NZ On Air, the video was created by Connor Pritchard (Director / DOP), Jasper Jay (DOP) and features animation by Ethan Zonneveld. It all unfolds with paint, confetti & yarn coming together in a vibrant visual as co-frontman Daniel Weetman sits down to tell the story.

South Pacific reggae-soul legends The Black Seeds have debuted new single ‘Freakin.’ The band’s funkiest offering to date, ‘Freakin’ is a disco-inspired dance floor filler that gets down with 808 drums, bouncy synths and a beat to strut to.

“Freakin is one for the end of the week, end of the line, letting loose. Shaking it off.” says band leaderBarnaby Weir. “It is the party pick me up track on the album with lyrics to match”

“The band liked the demo I presented to them, and we wanted something upbeat for the album and our live set too. So we began developing and layering the ‘Freakin’ and throwing all sorts of tasty keyboards and different uptight tones over one massive take.”

The Black Seeds have today announced their long-awaited sixth studio album. Fabric, which will be their first album in over five years, is set to be released on Friday 8 September via Remote Control. The album features their brand new single ‘Better Days’ which marked a triumphant return earlier this May.

After a couple of years touring the world and juggling festival slots, The Black Seeds focused their efforts throughout 2016 and 2017 on the recording of their new studio album. The sessions for Fabrictook place at acclaimed engineer/producer and long-time Black Seeds collaborator, Lee Prebble‘s Wellington studio The Surgery. The result is a twelve-track album of bold, groove-heavy tunes that demonstrate the multiple facets of what makes The Black Seeds who they are, set over a classic dub/reggae foundation.

It wouldn’t be a Black Seeds record without the warm affirmations of Weir and Weetman’s words, which we hear right from top to tail.
