Sebastian Mullaert is an electronic artist with a difference. His enchanting and unique sound leaves listeners mesmerised as he integrates both electronic and classical instrumentation. Aligning his mind with his music, Sebastian’s live performances (and productions) are inspired by spiritual Zen spiritual practices and meditative techniques – which are also drawn from the forest close to his home in Röstånga, where his studio space is situated.

Well known for being one half of Minilogue, Sebastian has also gained global respect as a solo act. Of late he has remixed Moby, he’s released his ‘Sumunnati’ EP on Default Position, his ‘All The Keys Are Here’ EP just dropped on Apollo and his touring schedule… well. Sebastian’s October/November run dates span across seventeen shows for the two month period, all of his which are of course going to be live.

When you listen to Sebastian Mullaert’s music you will feel something enchanting, a resonance that delivers truth, integrity and reminds us to simply be. The Swedish artist has a distinct approach to life, as well as music, which is centred around tranquillity, stillness and the convergence of Zen meditation, nature and creativity. Known for his work as one half of Minilogue, Sebastian is also an accomplished solo artist with new material ready to roll. As an artist that is constantly evolving he has taken a bold new direction in his sonic exploration, immersing himself in the neo-classical scene and joining forces with one of the top ten philharmonic orchestras in the world – Tonhalle Zürich. Working with great care and innovation he has created a truly immersive audio-visual performance experience, combining a mesmerising integration of electronic and classical instrumentation, with a visual art installation based on breath taking nature landscapes shot from a helicopter perspective. With such a innovative approach he aims to bridge the gap between classical and electronic music and introduce a whole new generation to the neo-classical concept.

Sebastian’s deep connection with music can be traced back to his formative years; from playing the organ and violin as a child, to performing in orchestras, string quartets and pop bands and progressing into electronic music in his late teens. Discovering house and techno in the mid-nineties was the catalyst behind a revolution in his life. From that point onwards, he set out on a new musical pathway, to promote the simplicity of being. Throughout the late nineties he experimented with electronic sounds, forming cult duo Minilogue with a friend and releasing with Crosstown Rebels, Traum Schallplatten, Wagon Repair and more, plus two albums via Cocoon – ‘Animals’ (2008) and ‘Blomma’ (2013). In 2014, the duo decided to take a break and invest their time in solo projects and Sebastian has since been hard at work cultivating a collection of new music already snapped up by hugely influential labels such as R&S sub-label Apollo, Drumcode, Hypercolour and Minus.

Sebastian Mullaert’s live performances are awe-inspiring, combining technical wizardry with energy, atmosphere and euphoria, you only have to watch his “Interpretations” performance for XLR8R or Boiler Room appearance for examples of his prowess. Recognition of his aptitude has led him to perform at institutions and festivals such as Panorama Bar – Berlin, Labyrinth Festival – Japan, Fabric – London, Concrete – Paris, The Block – Tel Aviv and Blackmarket – NYC.

Sebastian’s collaborative work runs parallel to his solo endeavours and he has teamed up with several prominent figures in the techno world to produce some unforgettable releases. Collaborators include Mathew Jonson, Eitan Reiter, Aril Brikha and Ulf Eriksson, and releases have come via underground platforms such as Hypnus, Mule Musiq and Kontra Musik. He also produces under the alias Wa Wu We, offering a serene, understated take on the techno aesthetic. Furthermore he is involved in the new Be Yokai project, a trio formed of Sebastian, Douglas Holmquist and Kristoffer Ström. The three men formed a natural alliance, finding their flow after several sessions together. Their first EP is signed to Hypercolour sub-label Space Hardware, with a live show and more music in the pipeline.

Sebastian’s studio sessions and live performances take influence from his spiritual practices and meditative techniques, and the inspiration provided by the serenity and simplicity of the forest close to his home in Röstånga. Sebastian has built his studio right next to the deep woodland as he finds the peace offered by the majestic, untainted forest informs his working process.

Sebastian Mullaert is already established as a potent force in the world of electronic music. Serious about reminding people to BE on the dance floor, or in the comfort of their own home, the music he makes is deep, progressive and utterly unique. His way of life, enthusiasm and dedication to his craft makes him one of the most exciting artists of his generation and, whatever the future holds, you can be sure he will continue to channel the infinite energy that surrounds us into every facet of his life.

Sebastian Mullaert returns to Mule Musiq with Broken Mirror

SEBASTIAN MULLAERT – BROKEN MIRROR

Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Mullaert continues his acclaimed solo project with the outstanding ‘Broken Mirror’ EP.

Mule Musiq is a label with which Sebastian has had a long- term relationship, having presented numerous earlier works on the Tokyo based imprint. Over 12 years they have released for a number of acclaimed artists including DJ Sprinkles, Lawrence, Fred P, Henrik Schwarz and Petre Inspirescu whilst retaining a low key, but highly respected profile.

‘Broken Mirror’ arrives after 2 lauded EPs this year – ‘All The Keys Are Here’ and ‘Samunnati’ – on R&S sub-label Apollo and Default Position respectively. This year saw Sebastian join forces with one of the top 10 philharmonic orchestras in the world – Tonhalle Zürich. Working with great care he created a truly immersive audio-visual neo classical performance experience, bridging the gap between classical and electronic music. On the club side visiting settings such as Berghain, Concrete in Paris, Freerotation, Lux Lisbon, Shelter Amsterdam, Village Underground and The Block Tel Aviv to name a few.

“Broken Mirror and the Wa wu we interpretation of it were both made around a piano phrase that I recorded. The piano has a very central melodic position of the both version even though they are very different to each other.

The song called “Mirrors” is to me almost like a separate piece even though I made it as a remix to the original; working with the sounds and soundscapes in a similar way as when I remix other people’s music.  I think one can here an echo of broken mirror but the new elements are too prominent so I decide to give it an individual name. ‘Mirrors’ was made the week before my gig at Berghain in may this year, and my spirit was tuned in with my upcoming gig at the techno mecca.“

SEBASTIAN MULLAERT – SAMUNNATI

by the partae July 17, 2017
written by the partae

Revered Swedish producer Sebastian Mullaert, releases his first exclusive vinyl on Default Position after the huge success of his remix to “Vedanta” in 2014.

Sebastian first made his name as one half of the acclaimed duos Minilogue and Son Kite, but in recent times focuses on his solo career, which sees him appearing at clubs and festivals all over the world and releasing on some of the industry’s most respected labels and imprints.

“Samunnati” is a brand new double vinyl EP featuring four original mixes from Mulleart, with remixes from fellow Swedish duo Knutsson/Berg, Belgium’s Daniel[i] and label founder Joseph S. Joyce. Its genesis lies in a melody recorded live on Sebastian’s Roland SH101 which features as the intro to his Dance thru Shadowed Structures Mix. Some time after this mix was published, a young artist named Daniel[i] was so captivated and inspired by the melody he took it upon himself to sample it and create a twelve minute remix without, we might add, Sebastian’s prior consent! Sebastian was however very impressed with the remix and admired Dan’s bold initiative. The pair later decided to approach Default Position with an idea of turning it into a full EP.

The project resulted in seven individual mixes, with the melody being processed and resampled in many different ways, offering several contrasting styles.

Up first on the EP we have Sebastian’s “The Vocal Expression” mix, chosen as the feature track for its incredible funk and high versatility. In this version Sebastian delivers a kind of “call and response” treatment to the melody, using clever filtering and signal processing techniques.

Up next we have Sebastian’s “In That Distorted Light Remix” which is an epic main room anthem guaranteed to lift the roof! In this version the melody is more recognizable in its original form, with additional layers from the SH101 and lots of analogue distortion, pushed to the absolute limits!

On the flip is the Samunnati (Original) mix, which perhaps lends itself most to Sebastian’s unmistakable signature sound. In this take the melody really blossoms and flowers in into a beautiful composition with layers upon layers of intricate patterns, drowned in luscious delays and spatial effects.

Sebastian’s fourth and final mix on the EP is the “Wa Wu We Simplification” which takes us in a totally new direction, with it’s low slung dubby vibes and amazing high frequency textures.

On track number five we have the truly refreshing, unique and quirky “Samunnati (Knutsson/Berg Remix)”. When given the challenge of creating a remix from just one melody the duo have risen to the task well, with their clever choices of resampling, drum programming and signal processing.

The sixth rendition of Samunnati is by label founder Joseph. S Joyce. In this version the melody is dropped down a semitone and looped with some very subtle modulations, vocal ambiences, percussions and shakers.

Finally track seven is handed over to the instigator of the Samunnati adventure. Mr Daniel[i] reveals the famous unsolicited remix which triggered this fantastic body of work.
