Sheffield’s RedFaces are currently on a headline UK tour – continuing tonight in Coverntry.

Chosen by NME as one of their essential picks for 2018, the year is already shaping up to be a busy one for the band. Previous single ‘Take It Or Leave It’ was chosen as BBC Radio 1’s ‘Introducing Track Of The Week’ and MTV chose them as a ‘One To Watch’ for this year.

The journey started at 2Fly studios in Sheffield, recording demos with Alan Smyth. Taking their influences from the 50s and 60s right through to today, by way of The Beatles, Hendrix, The Smiths and The Strokes. A brand-new single is due to be announced soon.

RedFaces

written by the partae
What is your name and role within RedFaces?
Isaac; Bassist and songwriter.
How did you start?
We just met in school, we were all into music and after being in a few different bands we eventually jammed together and started writing our own tunes – it spiralled from their I guess.Where are you currently based?
Sheffield (up North).

What are you working on right now?
We’re currently recording and preparing to release our 3rd single – so new it doesn’t have a name yet! We’re always rehearsing and writing new songs and generally being arses.

What is your gear setup?
I grew up listening to the Beatles, so have spent my life trying to get the Paul McCartney bass tone, but I also love to experiment with the sound of my bass so often run it through loads of weird pedals. I use ashdown valve amps, and loads of fuzz pedals and even a phaser pedal to really fuck the sound up and try make it “my own”.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I usually spend my music-less days getting angry at the news and reading about science and just about anything I come across. It definitely affects them music we write – we’ve written quite a few songs that are politically inclined and discuss current situations. There’s even an unreleased song called “Juno” that was inspired by the Juno space probe currently orbiting Jupiter – me and Harry (singer) thought it’d be an interesting thing to right about so we did it.

How would you describe your music genre?
Indie rock pop (slightly psychedelic) groove music that people can dance to, and sing along. Melody is hugely important so we always try and make things as catchy as possible.

Do you know any music theory?
I know the basics about chords, scales and harmonies. I can’t read music – none of us can – but it’s not made us any worse at music (we’re already terrible anyway).

What are your plans for the future?
Well, we’re releasing our next single soon (who knows when????) and we’ll be back on tour in the autumn. Charlie also hopes to perfect his skating tricks.

How did you get into music?
We were grown in a Petri dish for sole purpose of saving guitar music and then the world. Did you not know?

What are you listening to at the moment?
We’re really into PONDs brand new album “The Weather” they have a cool experimental, psychedelic sound and a really interesting songwriting style that were proper getting into. Charlie (drummer) is listening to bits of hip hop, especially a guy called MF Doom. We’re always listening to new music from all genres and it really helps craft our own sound and style. Ryan (guitarist) is listening to an American punk band called Meatwave.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

The Beatles will always be at the top. For me I’m always channeling Beatles in my songwriting, often subconsciously – genius. Oasis and the whole Britpop scene had a profound effect on all of us, in the way they broke through with catchy guitar pop songs and they’re reckless attitude – they really affected us growing up. In the past few years Me and the rest of the band have been hugely into an Australian psych pop band called Tame Impala – they opened our minds to new styles of production and songwriting and have some amazing songs! We listen to so much music though we can’t pick a top 5.

When and were are you playing next?
Next gig is Truck Festival on 22nd July, then a big London show on 24th with our pals In Sulks.

Music Interviews

REDFACES

by the partae May 22, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

Hello, I’m Harry and I write, sing and play guitar in RedFaces.

How did you start?

We started because me and charlie are slightly related and I ended up going to his house and messing about playing some songs together in his garage. We knew isaac from school who we started playing stuff with. Me and isaac started writing songs together and it went on from there really. We knew Ryan from the sheffield scene and he joined us after and we’ve just been gigging and playing ever since.

Where are you based?

Sheffield, Yorkshire.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

With our first single ‘Kerosene’ we had this riff that we didn’t know what to do with and we went outside in the car park and looked at the sky and saw all the aeroplanes and came up with the first lyric of the song: ” Sitting in a car park, breathing Kerosene”. Its always different though and every song we write will come out in a different way to last.

What are you working on right now?

We are just writing and gigging all the time. All the festivals are starting to come in now so we’ve got a lot to look forward to. We just sort of finished promoting our debut single Kerosene and soon we will be onto our second one.

What is your gear setup?

I play a fender Jazzmaster and a les paul through a Fender deluxe reverb and I’ve got a pedalboard with noodly, jangly effects pedals on it but I’ll not bore you with all the details. If you mean the whole band gear set up then I apologise because I don’t know all the ins and outs of what everyone plays.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I like to try and keep fit and run off all the subways we eat on tour. I play football when I can and watch my local rugby team on a Saturday whenever I’m free. There’s not much else I’m that passionate about but like I said as a band we do like our subway sandwiches.

How would you describe your music genre?

I try not to give us a specific genre because I feel like if you say indie music everyone assumes you write generic stuff that sounds like a million other things. If you say pop people assume you love like Adele or something. Nowadays it doesn’t really matter about genre anymore guitar music doesn’t have the scene it used to so there’s not that same attitude of guitar music against chart music it all really mushes into one now.

Do you know any music theory?

I know very little really I understand how it works but I can’t sight read at all or recall any interesting laws of music theory. I do know there’s something called a hemi-demi-semi quaver which sounds cool.

What are your plans for the future?

We are just gonna keep enjoying what we are doing, hopefully release more music and keep playing gigs.

How did you get into music?

My dad influenced my taste a lot so I would say that’s where i started to love particularly guitar music. It wasn’t till I was a little older when I discovered lots of other sides of music that I had ignored earlier on.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Lots of stuff. I tried to listen to a lot of music that isn’t British because sometimes too much of the same thing makes your writing a bit boring and you start creating stuff that sound all very similar. I’ve been really into an artist from Sweden I think, called MIYNT but she’s got some great tunes. Isaac showed me a band called ‘Pond’ from Australia, who have just released their new album ‘The Weather’ which we are all fans of. Mixing up your music and what you listen to really helps as a songwriter I think.

Who are your top 5 influences and Icons?
1. The Beatles
Just because they are the masters of writing great melodies and have so many different sides of their music. When me and ike started writing they were a great band to study on how they wrote their stuff.
2. The Smiths
For me they were another band that when I discovered them I just wanted to find more of their music. Morrissey’s voice was so weird compared to the new conventional 2000s pop singers that I grew up hearing. It was weird but I really liked it. Johnny Marr was another guitarist showing me that there was more to a guitar than just Oasis-esqe chords and solos.
3. Supergrass
I remember first listening to “Alright”  when my dad put it on in the kitchen and even though I was about 5 I remember it making me want to be able to sing a song like that to loads of people. Gaz Coombes also just seems likes a proper dude.
4. Tame Impala
Isaac was the first one to really get into them and loves them the most in the band. More than anything they just showed me that there’s more to music and good songs than having guitars and riffs and that other instruments are just as important as each other. Their 3rd album ‘Currents’ is more electronic and we tried to introduce more electronic stuff like synths and keyboard parts to make our music different to a lot of British guitar music out at the moment.
5. Victoria Wood
She’s not really a proper songwriting inspiration but I’ve been watching loads of her sketches whilst we’ve not been touring and I think she just puts words together so well and uses a lot of language in her songs that is much more interesting than the way people speak today.

When are you playing next?

Next week in Milton Keynes I think.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

Isaac loves Doctor Who, Charlie skates and Ryan got called Piehead at school.
