POLISH CLUB

Double A-sided Christmas Single

All I Want For Christmas Is You/ I Hate You But You Gotta Stay (On Christmas Day)’

WATCH THE ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU’ VIDEO HERE

Ah, the Christmas single. As collectible as a Beatles’ fan club flexi-disc and as timeless as Wham!, it’s that little touch of sonic mistletoe that brings you and your favourite band together when you need ’em the most.

Exactly halfway between shameless seasonal cash-in and deeply heartfelt token of appreciation for a monster year, Polish Club’s new double-A sided vinyl 45 is just what Santa ordered.

“We’ve been playing All I Want For Christmas Is You from the very beginning,” says singer-guitarist Novak. “I’ve always loved Mariah Carey in general and especially that song. We tried it one night a few Decembers ago and more people than we expected knew it, and it turns out loved it too.”

The other A side is a Polish Club original: the kind of thing that seems to happen, to their fans’ recurring delight, every time Novak and his drumkit-thrashing partner John-Henry face off across a sweaty rehearsal room.

“I Hate You But You Gotta Stay (On Christmas Day)’ is a tongue-in-cheek comment on how Christmas brings everyone together, regardless of how you might feel about them,” the singer explains.

“I wanna stress that the lyrics are completely fictionalised. I do not have a racist grandma. But I think it will resonate with some people. There’s a wide variety of characters at every Christmas table. But hey, love prevails!”

So it does in the celebrity-studded video for All I Want For Christmas…, as friends, family, Aussie TV royalty, talent show Idols and even a distinguished member of the House of Representatives line up to bawl their favourite part of Ms Carey’s most indelible hit.

Music Interviews

Polish Club

by the partae November 6, 2017
written by the partae
Who are we talking to and what is your role within Polish Club?

Novak. I mainly come up with shit GIF replies on our Facebook posts and spend most of the day arguing with our manager and John via text message. Sometimes we play music, and I sing and play guitar.

Where are you currently based?

Sydney.

Triple j featured your album ‘ Alright Already’ how did things change much for you after this huge exposure?

Our fanbase pretty much doubled after that and the Like A Version. Though now we have to play that damn Flume song all the time. He still won’t return my calls.

How did the band form?

Just a couple of dudes, too annoying to be in a four piece, too useless to go solo and too desperate to not do it at all.

What influences your sound?

Your ‘Christmas in December’ national tour is around the corner, how do you prepare for each show and what can we expect form these upcoming gigs?

We usually don’t prepare the performance too much because we like it spontaneous and exciting. Though we have a bunch of new songs from our new EP Okie Dokie, and perhaps even some more random stuff that we haven’t announced yet. So it’s going to be a pretty new and fun set. Also there’ll be heaps of Christmas shit going round, you’ll see.

What equipment do you use?

A strong internet connection, a laptop, some Blunnies, and shitloads of hair gel.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m currently in the Philippines for my grandma’s birthday, so it’s mostly horrible muzak from the late 90s/early 2000s.

Where did you record your latest EP ‘Okie Dokie’?

Golden Retriever in Marrickville. It’s a massive room next to The Red Rattler. It was so big and boomy for drums that we didn’t need to record bass at all.

Favourite track from ‘Okie Dokie’ and why?

The one slow jam that was about 1 minute long and didn’t make the EP. It’s my favourite because we decided to hard pan the drums and guitar (so one was completely on one side of the speakers) and it totally freaked out our manager. We argued and argued and it was a huge waste of time. Classic PC.

What do you enjoy most and dislike the least about touring?

Playing live in front of actual fans and future fans is literally the point of making music, or at least for me. People who complain about touring should shut up or not do it.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Maccas and Maccas.

Polish Club Q&A

POLISH CLUB RELEASE SIX NEW TUNES TODAY OKIE DOKIE EP OUT NOW

+ TOURING NATIONALLY DECEMBER

+ NOMINATED FOR ARIA BEST ROCK ALBUM 2017 FOR DEBUT ALBUM ALRIGHT ALREADY

“An exciting, wild noise, yet one supported by genuine imagination and ingenuity.”
– ROLLING STONE ★ ★ ★ ★

“The sweet sound of roaring success.”
– SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

“..highly original, daring release..”
– MUSIC FEEDS

“There are few musical experiences more joyous than a Polish Club show in 2017.”
– HOWL & ECHOES

Barely ten months after the Sydney guitar-drums duo blew up the party punch with their spring-loaded debut album, Alright Already, ARIA Award nominees Polish Club have surprised fans today with the release of six fresh tunes on their Okie Dokie EP.   Featuring new single Gimme Money, the new EP is available today in digital format and a limited edition 10” mustard coloured vinyl is available for pre-order here.

As drummer John Henry shrugs, “We’re not here to f*ck around, our process is pretty quick and easy so we might as well keep up the pace. We wrote Gimme Money a week or two before recording.”

Singer-guitarist Novak remembers the stand-and-deliver sentiment of Gimme Money arising from a broader concept about making the entire EP about a possible imminent apocalypse. “You know, so maybe we should make as much music as we can before the world blows up. My mind just naturally took that into ‘God, how hard is it being in a band?’ Which it isn’t, really, but … there’s a lot of misconceptions about the rewards of being in a working rock band,” he says with a laugh, recalling the blood and madness of Polish Club’s 15-date sold-out tour of the country in May.

Recording at a new studio, Golden Retriever in Marrickville provided the opportunity for the duo to refine their sound. “It sounds more like how we sound live. Sonically big, rounded… and swinging like it’s in a big hurry,” says Henry.

What we have is another utterly essential Polish Club recording that will slam you sideways against the nearest wall and refuse to apologise. Give ’em your money, and nobody needs to get hurt.

Catch Okie Dokie and other infectious material at the Polish Club ‘Christmas in December’ national tour this festive season.
