NEW ALBUM ‘CAFÉ OBLIVION’ OUT NOW

NATIONAL TOUR KICKS OFF APRIL 7

“The Café Oblivion. A fictional establishment built in a feverish dream. Equal parts heady, bizarre and rousing. Somewhere for Phar Lap and Charles De Gaulle to meet at the end of an hallucinatory day to recount stories of absurd love” – Alex Gow.

Oh Mercy’s highly anticipated fifth studio album ‘Café Oblivion’ is out today.  Download or stream the album HERE.

Alexander Gow, the Melbournian man behind Oh Mercy, has established the name as an iconic Australian act. Regarded as one of Australia’s most acclaimed singer/songwriters, Gow combines his love for the existential and absurd with a breadth of literary influences along with a perpetual air of romance.

Gow has a string of ARIA Award nominations under his belt for the albums ‘Great Barrier Grief’, ‘Deep Heat’ and an ARIA Award win for his most recent, 2015’s ‘When We Talk About Love’.

His fifth album Café Oblivion, exists at the intersection between Island Records era John Cale and Scotland’s The Waterboys while unabashedly flirting with the 60’s crooner cool of Lee Hazlewood and the cinematic exotica of Latin Playboys.

Says Gow, “Café Oblivion is an exercise in abandoning personal struggle. I’m a grown man now. I’m not out to prove anything to anyone, not even myself. Especially not myself. I’ve made an album that is entirely me. My ideas, my sense of humour, the type of melodies I hear. I’m proud and I’m comfortable. I’m excited”.

Café Oblivion was recorded over the 2016/2017 summer at The Grove studios, produced and mixed by Scott Horscroft. “I don’t remember much else besides watching the cricket and drinking coffee, that’s gotta be a sign of a great recording session.

Gow’s relationship with Horscroft was integral to the ‘Café Oblivion’ sound. After working together on ‘When We Talk About Love’ the pair had an established creative vocabulary that added an extra level of precision to the ‘Café Oblivion’ recordings. “Scott and I have a fantastic working relationship. Most of our decision-making is non-verbal. It’s very exciting. We have fun, we’re relaxed, and we get a hell of a lot of work done.”

‘Café Oblivion’ kicked off with first single ‘National Park’ and has been followed up by the infectious ‘Keep A Light On’, replete with an equally playful video directed by WILK (Sarah Blasko, Olympia). View HERE.  The album unfurls to reveal a wondrous and charming landscape. One unlike Oh Mercy has produced before. As the world gets crazier, Gow just keeps getting better.

Praise for ‘Café Oblivion’

“This is the most personal look inside his smooth but sensual world … Gow remains the keeper of The Go-Betweens’ literate, indie-pop flame …”

★★★★ HERALD SUN

“Gow remains the underrated champion of intelligent Australian pop.”

★★★★ THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

“This new album shares its lush and orchestral qualities with its predecessor.  The quality of the arrangements is undeniable.”  THE MUSIC

OH MERCY RELEASES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO “NATIONAL PARK”

ARIA Award winning Oh Mercy, the musical manifestation of Melbourne’s Alexander Gow, has just released new single “National Park”, complete with quirky accompanying video!

Gow explains the inspiration for the clip, saying, “My soon to be sister in law leads this incredible traditional Indonesian dance group. They’re called Bhinneka. I’d seen them perform a few times and was hell bent on getting them involved in a clip. My mates run the theatre up in Castlemaine. It’s an amazing looking space. They were kind enough to let us film there. I painted some fruit gold. A footy too. After that, we just needed to figure out how to combine those elements into a clip. The director, Si did such a great job. And Nick, he shot it and edited it. He nailed the bizarre vision. It’s lattes. It’s Castlemaine. It’s traditional Indonesian dancing. Gold. Footy. It’s Absurd. I like it.”

“National Park” was recorded at The Grove studios, and produced and mixed by Scott Horscroft.

“I don’t remember much else besides watching the cricket and drinking coffee, that’s gotta be a sign of a great recording session”. Gow continues, “during my final vocal takes, Scott broke the headphone mix down for me. It read: Channel 1 BAND. Channel 2 VOCALS. Channel 3. CRICKET. It’s important to keep informed”.

Oh Mercy’s latest musical offering sits somewhere between Island Records era John Cale and Scotland’s The Waterboys while unabashedly flirting with the 60’s crooner cool of Lee Hazlewood and the cinematic exotica of Latin Playboys.

At 29, Gow is regarded as one of Australia’s most acclaimed singer/songwriters. He is a willing accomplice to a lyrical curiosity which sees him combine his love for the existential and absurd with a breadth of literary influences along with a perpetual air of romance. His adoration of pop hooks stems from a teenage love of Bacharach and those melodic sensibilities endure.

Releasing four albums since his 2009 Debut, Gow has a string of ARIA nominations under his belt for the albums ‘Great Barrier Grief’, ‘Deep Heat’ and an ARIA Award for his most recent, 2015’s ‘When We Talk About Love’.

UNVEILING NEW OH MERCY TRACK ‘GONNA GO LIVE ON MARS’

by the partae June 17, 2017
written by the partae

LISTEN HERE

ACCESS FREE DOWNLOAD HERE

“The thing is I’ve always been in love with Agent 99. Lucky, Maxwell. That guy had a phone for a shoe! Then mum subscribed to the mid-1990’s Country Road catalogue. And then I was no longer a child. Then I saw Price on the telly. Because I wanted to be like him I started singing songs. Then I wrote some. Then I was an adult.

Watching the American Presidential election on my computer while playing the keyboards. So, I send my sweetheart this text message “pack your things, we’re moving to Mars”. She never packed her things and we’re still here. On Earth. Now that dude’s across the Pacific. And everywhere else too. Making some big calls. All I could do was write a longer text message and put it to music. That’s what a song is. To try to make it feel romantic and not so hopeless. His story reads like a Kilgore Trout novel. Science Fiction. Smut. So. I used synthesisers. The ones like in 60’s films.

Gonna Go Live On Mars isn’t gonna change the world, but he sure will. Happy birthday you whack job! Maybe the best way to stick it to him is to hold your close one, close.

This song isn’t on the album. The album will be out soon. I’ll have more to say about that sooner.

Enjoy, Alex.”
