GOLDEN HOUR NEW EP OUT NOW

New Portals have today released the video for their new song ‘Sober’, taken from their highly acclaimed new EP, Golden Hour.

The video features New Portals’ Ruth Aicken dancing among a kaleidoscopic wave of visuals. The song celebrates the very real option of enjoying sobriety, which finds Ruth singing, “I like to party when we’re sober” in her hypnotic hushed coo. The song is awash with beautiful acoustic guitar intertwined with slow-jam electronics.

Regarding the new single New Portals say, “‘Sober’ is about your ‘desert island friend’, the friend where you would be perfectly entertained if you were stuck on a desert island with them. No need for external help to have fun, ‘Sober’ is a celebration of this type of bond that we all need.”

‘Sober’ is taken from the recently released Golden Hour EP, which received great support from the likes of Vogue, Clash, Line Of Best Fit and many more. The EP also features the moving ballad ‘Chasing Shade’, the lush lounging indie of ‘Do It Right’ and the mellow R&B tinged ‘Locked Down’.

The Golden Hour EP follows the band’s debut EP Stereo released earlier this year to more great praise from the likes of the Metro, The Guardian, Dork Magazine, Missguided, Pretty 52, 1883, Galore, Pop Dust and many more.

New Portals have also received strong support from BBC Radio 1, with Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens particularly big champions of the band at the station. They’ve been featured in a host of high profile Spotify playlists and receive regular in-store rotation at a number of leading UK high street brands too. The band have also been developing increasing transatlantic appeal, having completed their first US tour last year and playing a number of shows at SXSW 2017.

As 2018 fast approaches, New Portals are continuing to prove they are formidable new force on the electronic indie pop landscape.

“One of the finest R&B-tinged male-female duos we’ve heard since AlunaGeorge”
The Guardian

“New Portals look to take pop to the next level”
Metro

“Worthy of everyone’s attention”
The Line Of Best Fit

“It’s a moving, sonically beautiful return”

LIVE IN LONDON TOMORROW
THE CROWNDALE, CAMDEN – NOVEMBER 10th

Belfast duo New Portals have released the video for their brand new single ‘Chasing Shade’. The new single is the latest to be taken from their recently released Golden HourEP.

The video premiered today with Clash who said, “The pair’s songwriting has a floral, pastoral quality, melodically easy on the ear while continually cutting a little deeper. New single ‘Chasing Shade’ is the perfect example. The duo’s voices intermingle, before tumbling down into a supple bath of electronics.”

‘Chasing Shade’ is a moving ballad from New Portals, with reverberating pianos and a solemn drum roll laying the foundations for the pair’s beautiful harmonies.

Regarding the video New Portals’ Mike Aicken says, “We shot the music video for ‘Chasing Shade’ opportunistically over the summer, in our practice space, the side streets surrounding our house in east Belfast and in some of the Game of Thrones backdrops in the “leadmines” of Newtownards. It features a burnt-out car, something that was a familiar sight from my childhood. The video also features our daughter, Freiah-Beth, dancing in the rain and under broken gutters on a typical Northern-Irish filming day. We actually decided to film ourselves whilst we were filming it, then ended up preferring the ‘B-roll’!”

The new single is the latest single to be taken from the Golden Hour EP, following the release of ‘Sober’, which takes things on a more electronic tip, with delicate synths paired with a 4/4 beat. The EP also features the lush lounging indie of ‘Do It Right’ and the mellow R&B-tinged ‘Locked Down’.

On the Golden Hour EP the band say, “This is our most honest and delicate release to date. We’ve tackled issues that aren’t necessarily in vogue. Discontent, sobriety, dissatisfaction. Production on the Golden Hour EP turned out differently from what we had envisioned. We booked studio time to make a simple acoustic record but couldn’t get away from adding in some synths and vibey electric guitar, so we just went with it. The EP ended up as a blend between folk and electronica.”
