How did you start?
We met through mutual friends randomly around 2014 and didn’t even know we were musically compatible until about a year ago. We reconnected and found ourselves at a bar called Break Room 86 where you have to frisked into the back of a hotel entrance and then enter through a vending machine door. And that’s when Liz said something about wanting to write music. The first song she sang to Gary was Patsy Clein – I Fall To Pieces. But she wanted it to sound like a hardcore song. The rest is history.
Where are you based?
Los Angeles. We used to go to a rock bar called Loaded. Now it has turned into a Star Wars Cantina knock off. So much for wanting to play our first show there. In fact every cool place in LA seems to get shut down after a year or two and gets turned into something temporary. I guess that’s just what happens when you live in such a transient city.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Our recent song Far Away Gone is a good example. It was conceived by Liz on the flight back from New Orleans after we played out first show ever at Southern Gothic Festival. She hummed the melody and came up with lyrics. A week later we ended up at the studio with a bottle of Tequila. Gary programmed Liz’s ideas into the laptop and voila! The song ended up on a vinyl compilation curated by the Lovecraft Bar in Portland.
What are you working on right now?
Gary’s label in Germany called Dependent Records decided to put our song “Puppet” on their annual Dependence compilaton. They also told us to write more dance songs. So now we’re on a roll. The newest song is called Scream. It started out sounding like a Eurythmics cover but turned into completely something else. Can’t wait to show y’all.
What is your gear setup?
Real basic. Gary hates overcomplicating it. FruityLoops, Trillian, Serum, a bunch of plugins. For the vocals Liz uses a Neumann U-87 going through a Universal Audio interface. Kind of the same thing you see in the Straight Outta Compton movie.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
Liz likes to plant fairie gardens of poop dropping woodland creatures. Liz is also planning to be Mayor of Los Angeles by 2030. And Gary just has no life, really. But kind of does music full time and is known for his industrial band Dismantled and pop band Aerodrone.
How would you describe your music genre?
Fetish tinsel. Or EDM. Or country. Or dark wave pop industrial. You pick.
Do you know any music theory?
Gary was classically trained in Novosibirsk, Russia where he was born. He was supposed to be a pianist. Liz was in the school choir and musical theatre. That’s about it.
What are your plans for the future?
Burning the world down with our first EP. Sydney, I hope you make good tequila sunrises.
How did you get into music?
You don’t get into music. Music is just in you. It festers inside until it is ready to come out.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Liz is listening to Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Travis Scott, Rufus Du Soul, and Of Montreal. Gary just listens to Soundgarden obsessively.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Robyn, Yes, Madonna, Stevie Nicks for Liz. Marilyn Manson for Gary.
When are you playing next?
We are playing Tijuana June 16 and Downey, CA June 17th. We are excited and scared at the same time.
