Praise for ‘Bravado’

“a 10-track pop record that will satisfy your ears/heart/mind for years” –  4/5 stars – Herald Sun

“The year’s most successful pop oddity…….one of the most addictive and affecting pop records of the year” – The FADER

“it’s still melodramatic and impassioned, but it’s also floaty, approachable” – SPIN

“…there is a real craftsman at work here. You can’t fool us, KJC — you’re an artist, even when appearing to take the piss.” – 4/5 stars – Album of the Week – The Music

“This is Callinan’s dance record, filled with typically wry lyrics, amusing cameos – Jimmy Barnes lends his howl to “Big Enough” – and Callinan’s cool cronies (he counts Connan Mockasin, Weyes Blood and Jorge Elbrecht among his friends and fans)” – Rolling Stone

“Bravado is an entirely new beast in itself – an epic, grandiose affair, teeming with infectious ‘80s new wave synth pop, glimmering ‘90s EDM and an extensive roll call of guests.” – 9.5/10 stars – Album of the Week – Beat Magazine

“What Bravado never is, however, is remotely boring – which is to be expected since Callinan is a man who revels in getting a reaction.” – The Guardian

 “Out-fuckin’-standing.” – Pedestrian

“Our favourite video clip of the entire year, or maybe even the decade, as he’s roped in the legendary Jimmy Barnes to appear in seriously epic fashion.” – Tone Deaf

Album ‘Bravado’ released this Friday

National tour dates commence this weekend

Kirin J Callinan will release Bravado, his second full-length album, this Friday via Siberia/EMI Music Australia. Today he launched the third video for the album, Living Each Day – directed by Kii Arens. Living Each Day features Connan Mockasin and Kirin himself thinks it’s a pop gem. The main lyrical idea is that of “Living Each Day (Like It’s Your Last)”.

“Once you accept Bravado’s obnoxious exterior as honest – and yes, brave – the record’s humanity is unlocked. Repeat listens reveal Bravado as one of the most addictive and affecting pop records of the year!”..THE FADER

“You can’t fool us, KJC – you’re an artist, even when appearing to take the piss.” THE MUSIC, ****Album of the Week

“(Living Each Day)..the closest thing to hair metal psych-pop you’ll hear today” ….SPIN

“This is Callinan’s dance record, filled with typically wry lyrics, amusing cameos – Jimmy Barnes lends his howl to Big Enough – and Callinan’s cool cronies (he counts Connan Mockasin, Weyes Blood and Jorge Elbrecht among his friends and fans).”.. ROLLING STONE

Kii Arens is based in Los Angeles and has worked with artist as profound and broad as Devo to Dolly Parton. He had this to say about his experience with this video…. “Directing Kirin J. was an absolute blast. His “Shock Crooner” style and full-on performance made every scene really come alive.  It’s refreshing to find a front man that actually performs with style and wit.  I hope his performance technique rubs off on the world because it’s a rare thing”.

On Bravado, Kirin’s sophomore release, he has added euphoric EDM and unabashed humanity to his circa 2017 arsenal, delivering a defiantly exuberant second album! Other Guests on the album include  Alex Cameron, The Finn Family (Neil, Liam etc), Weyes Blood, Owen Pallet, Mac DeMarco and more.

His debut full-length album, Embracism, was released in July 2013. Since then, he’s been photographed by Hedi Slimane, opened for friends like TV On The Radio and Tame Impala, played on records for and toured with Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson and more. Later this year, he will co-star as an actor in the upcoming second season of the critically acclaimed & Golden Globe winning Jane Campion directed drama Top Of The Lake (Series 2).

Jane Campion said of Kirin “We cast Kirin in Top of the Lake: China Girl  to play Elizabeth Moss’s brother Liam. He had done some bizarre fun turns in various short films mostly in under pants and I wondered if he would be able to find the reality of a character.  My co director Ariel Kleiman knew Kirin quite well and was an advocate for him. Kirin however did a touching very direct audition and I was really excited by the surprising tone and his personal qualities he brought to the material. Kirin was a joy to work with because he was imaginative playful and exploring. He seems somehow to push the limits of human being in the biggest sense like he might have been raised by unicorns.” Top of The Lake is coming soon to BBC First on Foxtel.

Kirin recently started another band with hit songwriter Martin Johnson called The Night Game, and they were recently tapped by John Mayer to open his extensive North American tour in July + August this year. Stay tuned for more on this one.

Kirin J Callinan will release Bravado, his second full-length album on June 9thvia Siberia Records/EMI Music Australia. Today he adds to the previously released title track and the amazing “S.A.D (Song About Drugs)” video with two new songs.

“Living Each Day” features Connan Mockasin and Kirin thinks it’s a pop gem. The main lyrical idea is that of “Living Each Day (Like It’s Your Last)”. Kirin wants you to know this too: “The reason the recording sounds so damn expensive is Aaron Cupple’s production prowess coupled with Mark Ronson’s generosity, granting us access gratis to his London studio for the day, tracking the drums, guitars & vox with his grammy award winning in-house Italian Ricardo Damian. Back south o the hemisphere, I then popped in to visit Connan Mockasin one heady afternoon on the north island o New Zealand, in a shack at the time, and coerced him into laying down a cheeky vocal refrain + inspired flashes of soulful, ad-lib genius.”

“Down 2 Hang” features New York No Wave legend James Chance and started simply as a list of things that can hang. It was recorded in Montreal with six-time Grammy nominated producer Damian Taylor. Kirin states: “he introduced himself after seein’ me open up for Kid Congo Powers, we tracked it the following day; the instrumental growing from a live jam, yours true on gat n noise & Damian on modular synth. The lead vocal was performed just once, live take, first take, only take, much of the lyric improvised, but once in the can we knew it was what it was, that it was it.”

Kirin J. Callinan has been called many things… an enigma, a chameleon, confrontational, unconventional, a provocateur, shocking, seductive, a virtuoso….but above all fascinating. A guitarist, singer, songwriter and solo performer from Australia, Kirin J Callinan is a child of the 1980’s. He is known for his confrontational live performances, haunting compositions and wild guitar playing. He is a performer by nature, very charismatic, and very unafraid to bare his soul and more.

Bravado is out on June 9th via Siberia Records/EMI Music and for his sophomore release, he has added euphoric EDM and unabashed humanity to his circa 2017 arsenal, delivering a defiantly exuberant second album! Other Guests on the album include Alex Cameron, The Finn Family (Neil, Liam etc), Weyes Blood, Owen Pallet, Mac Demarco and more.

His debut full-length album, Embracism, was released three years ago, in July of 2013. Since then, he’s been photographed by Hedi Slimane, opened for friends like TV On The Radio and Tame Impala, played on records for and toured with Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson and more. Later this year, he will co-star in the upcoming second season of the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award winning Jane Campion drama Top Of The Lake, due for release in 2017. He also recently started another band with hit songwriter Martin Johnson called The Night Game, and they were recently tapped by John Mayer to open his extensive North American tour in July + August.
