HUNDRED WATERS SHARES VIDEO FOR ‘WAVE TO ANCHOR’

LA-based trio Hundred Waters have shared a buoyant video clip for ‘Wave To Anchor‘, a particularly effusive and ebullient track from their recently released full length Communicating, out now on Pod via Inertia Music. The video was directed by Allie Avital (Chairlift, Moses Sumney) and shot entirely on location in Bulgaria with a cadre of local dancers, sheep, and bystanders on hand to augment vocalist Nicole Miglis’ exuberant performance. Last week the band debuted a new custom-designed lighting rig called Array. Crafted by esteemed production artist Timeboy (who was behind Flying Lotus’ 3D live show), the rig is a hand built grid of two-sided discs that alternate between projection screen and mirrored surface, creating a veritable kaleidoscope of projected images and reflected light.  Footage from their show at the El Rey in Los Angeles, featuring Array can be viewed here.

LA-based trio Hundred Waters – comprised of vocalist Nicole Miglis, producer Trayer Tryon and drummer Zach Tetreault shares new song “Wave To Anchor”, the fourth single from their forthcoming album Communicating out next Friday September 15 on Pod via Inertia Music(and longtime label OSWLA in North America).

The buoyant song demonstrates the band’s equal willingness to indulge in explosive pop melodies as well as experimental production techniques, underscoring the tremendous strides in composition, performance, and confidence the band has made since their last album.

The track follows the recently released creepy crawly video for “Fingers” and single “Blanket Me”, which earned a coveted “Best New Track” designation from Pitchfork. This accolade combined with the songs’ reserved and masterful executions illustrate the leap in composition, performance, and confidence the band has undergone in the three years since 2014’s critically lauded The Moon Rang Like a Bell.

It starts with a need for independence and it ends with an ‘all better,’ like we did it: we learned, we loved, we separated, and now it’s time for the next chapter.”

In conjunction with the announce the band has shared album single “Blanket Me”, a stirring piano-driven epic whose cathartic structure belies the leap in composition, performance, and confidence the band has undergone in the three years since 2014’s critically lauded The Moon Rang Like a Bell.

At the same time it’s more confidently experimental, unafraid to spike its pop hooks with noise, or build elaborate, fractal-like patterns out of Nicole Miglis’ multitracked voice. In the span between albums the band have travelled, separated, reunited, lost a band member, questioned relationships, and strove to understand what it means to be together. At the core of the album is the relationship between Miglis and and band member Trayer Tryon, whose relationship catalysed the band in 2012. The album raises questions of romantic and non-romantic love, self-realisation, growing apart, and finding understanding. To keep it close, the band wrote and recorded at home (the trio maintain a shared living space). Nicole chose to cut herself off from the outside world and recorded vocals in her closet. Tray produced at the kitchen table or wherever he could make room. When things got too close they ought other environments (drums and piano were recorded in a converted Detroit church, for instance). Where Communicating ultimately succeeds is on the most personal, intimate level. It’s a record about breakups, rebirths, searching for peace, getting lost, and discovering unexpected ways of being happy. “From a broad lens,” Miglis says, “the album is a breakup. The band plays FYF Festival in Los Angeles next weekend before heading out on a three week US tour in September, concluding with a performance at Miami’s III Points Festival with Lafawndah and Kelsey Lu as support acts at various shows.

Following on from the surprise release of their Currency EP, last month as well as the success of their personally curated FORM Arcosanti Festival, Hundred Waters have shared two new videos featuring live performances of “Currency” and “Takeover” filmed at the unique festival.

The performances were a part of a special set (including debuts of new material) at the fourth annual FORM Arcosanti last month, the music & arts festival they founded and curate in Arizona. The festival’s 2017 headliners included Solange, James Blake, Father John Misty and Future Islands.

The Currency EP was generated during the same fertile recording sessions as the band’s forthcoming third album, which is due for release later this year. The new album will be the trio’s first full length since 2014’s critically lauded The Moon Rang Like a Bell (Best New Music – Pitchfork), whose glowing response led to worldwide tours with the likes of The xx and multiple late night TV appearances (including a collaborative performance with Skrillex and Chance The Rapper on Late Night with Stephen Colbert).
