HATCHIE RELEASES ‘ADORED’ AS PART OF 2018 ADULT SWIM SINGLES PROGRAM + PLAYING SPILT MILK FESTIVAL, FALLS FESTIVAL & GOLDEN PLAINS

by the partae October 31, 2018
written by the partae

Off the back of a fantastic year for Hatchie – including the release of her celebrated debut EP Sugar & Spice as well as sold-out shows across UK, Europe, Australia (sold out tour) and most recently, North America – the Brisbane artist has unveiled a stunning new track and accompanying video for ‘Adored’, filmed and directed by Trevor Crump.

‘Adored’ was debuted as part of Adult Swim’s eighth annual Singles Program, and is now available across all services. Debuting in 2001, Adult Swim serves as the nighttime identity of the US Cartoon Network.

Hatchie on ‘Adored’:
“Adored  is a song  that’s been floating  around for a few years  now so I’m really excited  it’s finally found it’s place  with this release. I’ve been playing  it live since my first show but didn’t  feel it fit on either my EP or album. It’s  about always wanting more than what you have, even  if it’s perfect.”

‘Adored’ is the first piece of new music since Hatchie’s debut EP Sugar & Spice was released in May this year, winning praise across the globe. The five-track collection, which has notched up 7.5 million streams and counting, includes singles ‘Try’, ‘Sure’, ‘Sugar & Spice’, ‘Sleep’ (Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Track’) and ‘Bad Guy’. Glowing reviews have followed Hatchie around and don’t seem to be slowing down with the likes of Pitchfork (including a Pitchfork Rising feature), Popjustice, Wonderland and The Guardian UK, triple j, FBi, Spotify, Apple Music, Purple Sneakers, VICE, TheMusic and many more rewarding her undeniable craft with shimmering praise.

Hatchie has just returned from touring North America with Alvvays and Snail Mail as well a string of headline shows, including selling out her debut LA gig.  Looking ahead, Harriette Pilbeam and her band prepare to return to Europe for performances at Pitchfork Paris’ Avant-Garde event in October and a London headline show at Electrowerkz on November 1st, before returning to Australia to play festivals Spilt Milk and Falls, as well as joining the just-announced 2019 Golden Plains lineup.

Hatchie is the world of Harriette Pilbeam. To hear her music is to step inside her mind; a dreamy landscape where cascading synths, jangling guitars and white noise undulate beneath irresistible pop melodies. Rather than focusing on the external world of her daily life in Brisbane, Australia, Pilbeam instead turns her gaze inwards, making a soundtrack out of her daydreams, setting her emotional life to song.

In amongst a busy schedule, Hatchie is currently working on her anticipated debut album, which is scheduled for release in 2019. Stay tuned for more exciting Hatchie news!

Hatchie shares “Sugar & Spice,” title track from debut EP out 5/25 via Double Double Whammy

Australian artist-on-the-rise, Hatchie has released a video for the title track from her anticipated debut EP, Sugar & Spice. Stereogum, who premiered the Joe Agius directed video today is saying it’s “a perfect radio-friendly indie-pop song – if radio stations were still playing perfect indie-pop songs like this – it matches its spangly guitar shimmer with vocal harmonies that sound almost like the late Dolores O’Riordan at her sweetest.”
Harriette Pilbeam, aka Hatchie, says: “Joe and I spent about an hour filming with the guys and two days drawing for the video. It’s such a fun short song, so we wanted something simple and colourful, and less serious than our previous videos. Joe came up with the concept and we took inspiration from our old school scrapbooks.”
Hatchie made a splash last year with the song “Try,” which NPR called “hazy and misty, but with pop-rooted forward momentum.” She followed that up with “Sure,” which The FADER hailed as “transfixing and genuinely catchy – like, turn-of-the-century radio pop catchy” and Brooklyn Vegancalled “one part ’90s shoegaze and one part straight-ahead pop.”
Sugar & Spice is available for pre-order now and due out May 25th via Double Double Whammy.

HATCHIE: Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie remixes Brisbane newcomer’s new single ahead of SXSW & UK live dates.

by the partae February 23, 2018
written by the partae

Following the news of her signing to Heavenly Records, Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie has re-worked the latest single from Brisbane artist-on-the-rise, Hatchie.

Guthrie already publicly gave his seal of approval to Hatchie’s debut single ‘Try’, and now he has added some of his magic to the already sparkling second single, ‘Sure’.

The release comes hot off the back of a huge six months for the artist. After signing to Ivy League Records for Australia/New Zealand, Hatchie has inked more record deals with Heavenly Recordings for UK/Europe and Double Double Whammy/Polyvinyl for North America. The incredible international demand will see Hatchie embarking on a huge run of shows in the coming months, including a 7-date UK tour as well as US dates, including a performance at this year’s SXSW.

Hatchie is the world of Harriette Pilbeam. To hear her music is to step inside her mind; a dreamy landscape where cascading synths, jangling guitars, propulsive rhythms and white noise undulate beneath undeniable and irresistible pop melodies. Rather than focusing on the external world of her daily life in Brisbane, Pilbeam instead turns her gaze inwards, making a soundtrack out of her daydreams, setting her emotional life to song.

Having played in her friends’ bands in Brisbane, namely Go Violets and Babaganouj, Hatchie is Pilbeam’s first foray into solo territory, something she seems undaunted by. “I feel like I’m only just beginning to really assert myself in the world and the Hatchie project has forced me to reassess and make so many positive changes,” she says. “When I look back on this period of time, I think I’ll see Hatchie as a huge evolutionary force in my life.”

Things don’t seem to be slowing down any time for Hatchie. 2018 is bound to be a big one for Hatchie – watch this space for more release details!

“Sure” is available digitally though all reputable outlets via Heavenly Recordings – http://smarturl.it/Hatchie_Sure.

HATCHIE: Brisbane newcomer shares video for her new single “Sure” & confirms The Great Escape & SXSW shows

HATCHIE

– Shares new video to accompany single “Sure“
– Confirmed to play The Great Escape & SXSW in 2018

“Very, very lovely.” – The 405
“A shoegazey pop earworm” –  The Fader
“It’s hard to think of it as anything less than brilliant” – Wonderland

“Hatchie swoops into earshot… a marvellous mesh of Cocteau Twins-y atmospherics & jangly 90’s pop” – The Line of Best Fit

Having already won praise across the globe for her second ever single, “Sure”, Brisbane newcomer, HATCHIE, has shared a video to accompany the track and announced her first UK shows at The Great Escape festival in the spring.

Hatchie is the world of Harriette Pilbeam. To hear her music is to step inside her mind; a dreamy landscape where cascading synths, jangling guitars and white noise undulate beneath undeniable and irresistible pop melodies. Rather than focusing on the external world of her daily life in Brisbane, Australia, Pilbeam instead turns her gaze inwards, making a soundtrack out of her daydreams, setting her emotional life to song.

New single “Sure” was written on a whim when a melody jumped into Pilbeam’s head, and finished swiftly in one day. The chorus plaintively unravels, setting the sorrow to shimmering synth washes, wrapping the whole thing up in a melody so gorgeous that it would fit seamlessly into The Sundays and Alvvays songbooks.

“I wrote “Sure” about people I know falling in and out of the same relationship issues as we grew out of our teens into early adulthood” she explains. “When I initially wrote it, it was about a couple that decided to give it “one more shot” over and over again because they couldn’t bare to be apart. When I think about all the lyrics now I realise that it could be interpreted in a number of different ways.”

The instinctual pop nous is undoubtedly on full display in “Sure”, but like all of Hatchie’s music, the track trades in shade as well as light. It’s at once accessible yet cerebral, walking a line between instant ear worm and something deeper and more oblique. It continues the story that began with pop gem “Try”; a runaway success at home in Australia, which also won Hatchie a fan in Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie. “It’s pretty weird being social media friends with one of your heroes” laughs Pilbeam.

Sure” preceeds what already looks to be a busy 2018 worldwide, with shows at SXSW & The Great Escape already confirmed and much more news to follow soon.

Hatchie Releases New Single ‘Sure’ + Joins The Ivy League Family

HATCHIE

RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘SURE’
+ JOINS THE IVY LEAGUE FAMILY

Off the back of her breakthrough first single ‘Try’, Brisbane artist-on-the-rise Hatchie is back with the equally stunning new track, ‘Sure’. The new single received its worldwide premiere on triple j’s Good Nights on Monday evening, followed by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 and online via FADER. To coincide with the release, Ivy League Records is thrilled to announce that Hatchie has officially joined the label family and will be releasing her debut EP in 2018.

‘Sure’ continues the story that began with the runaway success of this year’s pop gem ‘Try’. Seemingly coming out of nowhere, ‘Try’ (together with the video, premiered by NPR) introduced Hatchie as an artist to watch. After uploading the track to triple j Unearthed in May, the song instantly got added to radio playlists across the country. triple j’s Nick Findlay called it, “A huge first track!”.

What followed was a deluge of conclusive signs that Hatchie is indeed a star on the rise. She has since signed management and booking deals, has seen her name listed on the bill for various festivals and has managed to reach a global audience – even winning a fan in Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie.

The artist’s instinctual pop nous is undoubtedly on full display in ‘Sure’, but like all of Hatchie’s music, the track trades in shade as well as light. Written on a whim when a melody jumped into Pilbeam’s head, and finished swiftly in one day, ‘Sure’ is at once accessible yet cerebral, walking a line between instant ear worm and something deeper and more oblique. “I think that’s because I’m still making up my mind,” offers Harriette. “I’m kind of jumping between, ‘Do I want to just make fun pop songs? Or do I want it to be more shoegaze and more of a band sound?’ I really love writing pop songs, but then messing them up and turning them into something else. Something darker.”

Having played in her friends’ bands in Brisbane (Go Violets, Babaganouj) Hatchie is Pilbeam’s first foray into solo territory, something she seems undaunted by.

The artist was recently announced as a finalist for the prestigious Grant McLennan Fellowship. Having already toured nationally with The Creases there are shows supporting Ball Park Musicand The Temper Trap on the horizon plus appearances at Festival Of The Sun and perhaps most impressively, South By South West in Austin next year.

INTRODUCING HATCHIE THE AUSTRALIAN ARTIST RELEASES “TRY” VIDEO

by the partae June 19, 2017
written by the partae

Hatchie, the moniker of Brisbane, Australia’s Hariette Pilbeam, has released a video for her debut single, “Try.”  NPR , who premiered the video today are saying “the song is hazy and misty, but with pop-rooted forward momentum; the glistening guitars and synthesizers, along with Pilbeam’s ethereal vocal delivery, evoke (apt) Cocteau Twins comparisons.”

Since it’s release last month, “Try” has been making waves in Australia, getting championed by Triple J and making it’s way onto Spotify’s viral list, Top 40s and Best Of playlists. The 24 year old quietly honed her own sound, producing and recording tracks in her off time from the many bands she was a part of in the Brisbane scene. “Try” marks the first of what is sure to be many riveting releases from this promising new artist.
