DEBUT LP RESERVOIR OUT TODAY
+ ANNOUNCES AUS ALBUM TOUR AND EUROPEAN TOUR WITH ASGEIR
+ WATCH ‘BITTER END’ VIDEO IN 360° VR
+ WATCH ‘BITTER END’ ACOUSTIC IN BARCELONA

‘Reservoir floods the listener with a grandiose ocean of melody, waves of comfort and discomfort rolling in and out’ – NYLON

8.5/10 ‘It’s charm is undeniable’ – The Line Of Best Fit

‘Incomparable, near-elemental ability to summon sounds from the ether and whip them into heartrending works of beauty’ – Stereogum

‘Gordi is her own formidable talent’ – NPR Music

‘Gordi is your next favorite folktronica genius’ – Noisey

✭✭✭✭ ‘A powerful debut from a driven young artist’ – The Music

✭✭✭✭ ‘A textural pastiche, the album veers from polyrhythmic synths paired against warm bass lines to moments of subtle vulnerability’ – Rolling Stone

RESERVOIR :: Deeply planting yourself in one reality, or one state of feeling. Other people come and go within that. You survive outside of it. Time moves on regardless.

Today, Gordi shares her debut long-player, Reservoir.

Liberation is proud to release this exquisite record, which follows on from her breakthrough EP, Clever Disguise. The rogue individualism of Reservoir has taken the world by storm, with tastemakers admiring and praising its beautiful and dynamic orchestration.

“The name Reservoir, it’s that thing that you can’t describe, that space that anxious people would probably live their life in. It’s actually an expression my friend and I use. If I’m really down one day, I’ll say, ‘Oh I’m a bit in the reservoir today’. You’re mulling everything over, and you’re sitting in all these thoughts and feelings. In order to be able to write a song I need to go to that place, but I couldn’t live a functional life if I spent all my time in there.” – Gordi

In exciting news for local fans, Gordi is delighted to announce that the intimate sounds of Reservoir will be brought to life on her national album tour in Oct / Nov, playing her largest spaces yet. It’s clear that the 24-year old artist from Canowindra is quickly becoming one of Australia’s most buzzed about songwriters and promising exports.

Reservoir was produced by Gordi and co-produced alongside Tim Anderson (Solange, Banks, Halsey), Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey) and Alex Somers (Sigur Ros) and was recorded in Wisconsin, Reykjavik, Los Angeles, New York, Bristol, Helsinki and Sydney – all amidst Gordi finishing a six year medical degree. The album is a cohesive work that blends honest feeling, introspection, and self-therapy with an alluring integration of digital and analogue soundscapes, exploring the ramifications of loss and time.

Reservoir has been the feature album all this week on triple j. Leading up to its release Gordi has shared a string of beautiful singles and videos for ‘Heaven I Know’, ‘On My Side’ and ‘Bitter End’, which have received heavy airplay via triple j, FBi and regional community radio. Last week Gordi revealed one of the world’s first multi-platform videos for ‘Bitter End’ which is available for viewing in 360° virtual reality. It was premiered by Noisey and named Vevo’s #MustSee clip. Gordi also recently played a stripped down version of the song on her Stereogum Live Session .

Today, Gordi also shares an acoustic version of ‘Bitter End’ shot at the Greek Theatre Gardens in Barcelona, in between her shows at Primavera earlier this year.

Find yourself a headset and experience ‘Bitter End’ in 360° virtual reality

And then watch Gordi perform ‘Bitter End’ acoustically at the Greek Theatre Gardens in Barcelona

Gordi has just wrapped up a run of performances in North America, before embarking on an extensive run of European dates. She has already spent the last year touring the globe, selling out headline shows in London and supporting the likes of Bon Iver, Asgeir, The Tallest Man on Earth and Highasakite.

triple j is proud to support Gordi’s national Reservoir Tour, which kicks off in Melbourne at the end of November. These shows will follow her tour with Gang Of Youths in September and an extensive European tour supporting Asgeir, including a special hometown show with Asgeir at Reykjavik’s iconic Harpa Concert Hall. Gordi will also be performing special in-stores around release in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney over the next three days.

Reservoir is out now through Liberation / Jagjaguwar. Fall in – stay as long as you need.

Gordi quickly caught our attention in 2015 with her mesmerising voice, ethereal production, and shimmering songcrafting potential. Since then, she’s taken advantage of the platform her success has afforded her – triple j

‘We named Gordi an Artist To Watch based on the young Australia’s incomparable, near elemental ability to summon sounds from the ether and whip them the ether and whip them into heartrending works of beauty’ – Stereogum

‘To listen to Reservoir is to listen to Gordi wade through her own burdensome emotional waters and carry the broken remnants of her thoughts and feelings back to shore with her, to be later sorted, documented, and put neatly away’ – Paste Magazine

GORDI reveals new single ‘On My Side’ with video from debut album, ‘Reservoir’ + supporting Asgeir later this month

REVEALS NEW SINGLE ‘ON MY SIDE’ WITH VIDEO FROM DEBUT ALBUM, RESERVOIR + SUPPORTING ASGEIR LATER THIS MONTH

Having just returned to Australia from a two month tour abroad, and following on from two sold out intimate homecoming shows in Sydney and Melbourne last week, local songstress Gordi today unveils a second single from her debut album Reservoir, titled ‘On My Side’.

Premiering on triple j yesterday afternoon, ‘On My Side’ was co-produced with Tim Anderson (Solange/ Banks) and brought together over several months between Los Angeles, Sydney and Eau Claire in Wisconsin. Previous Gordi collaborator, Francois Tetaz (Gotye) mixed the song. The infectious single comes complete with a striking, cinematic video directed by Kris Moyes. The video was filmed at Salton Sea in the Californian desert during Gordi’s recent US tour last month and features an impassioned performance from the artist herself.

VIDEO: ‘On My Side’ by Gordi

“We started recording ‘On My Side’ with Tim in LA, when I had laryngitis. We had two days to do two songs and managed to get it done, minus the vocals. I did still do a vocal take but I had to sing half of the song an octave lower. You can hear what we call the ‘laryngitis vox’ in parts of the song if you listen closely.

“I wrote the song about being incapable of telling someone that I needed them, ‘sending my words silently’ through lyrics instead. I wanted the video to represent not only the message of this song, but the album in its entirety. This idea of guiding someone through your ‘reservoir’ – your inner most place. I don’t think you can tell someone how to get there, you have to take them to that place yourself. And shooting in the Californian desert in 43 degrees was certainly testing!” – Sophie Payten aka Gordi

‘On My Side’ follows on from the release of ‘Heaven I Know’ from the Canowindra-born medical student’s debut album Reservoir, which is due for release globally on August 25 (via Liberation Music for Australia/ New Zealand and Jagjaguwar for the rest of the world). ‘Heaven I Know’ worked its warm charm globally. Locally, it received airplay on triple j, FBI and community radio, and it was added to a plethora of Spotify and Apple Music playlists globally; already up to 430,000 streams on Spotify since its release 4 weeks ago.  The song also received high praise online:

“Gordi will surely be a force in alt-pop” – Paste Magazine

“The first peek at the Australian’s debut album is a carefully constructed emotional affair” – DIY Magazine

‘Cinematic’ – The Line of Best Fit

‘A lush piano based ballad’ – triple j

Reservoir was written by Payten and co-produced alongside Tim Anderson, Ali Chant (Perfume Genius/PJ Harvey) and Alex Somers (Sigur Ros). It was recorded across studios in Reykjavik, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney, as well as Bon Iver’s April Base in Wisconsin.

“The name Reservoir, it’s that thing that you can’t describe, that space that anxious people would probably live their life in.. In order to be able to write a song I need to go to that place, but I couldn’t live a functional life if I spent all my time in there.” – explains Payten.

To say that the past few years have been hectic for Gordi is somewhat of an understatement. In between completing a medical degree which saw her juggling a rigorous study schedule with exams and hospital placements, and releasing a world renowned EP Clever Disguise, Gordi somehow also found the time to work on her debut album and tour the globe several times over. In amongst all that, she caught the attention of her labelmates Bon Iver who asked her to perform backing vocals for them on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at the tail end of last year. She has also been nominated for a J Award and two FBI SMAC Awards, and was crowned triple J’s Unearthed Most Played Artist in 2015.

Following her upcoming performances with Asgeir in July and one last hospital placement over the next four weeks, Gordi will return to Canada and the US for further touring leading into Reservoir’s release.

‘Exceptional’
– Clash

‘An anthemic song’ – Sterogum

GORDI SHARES VIDEO FOR ‘HEAVEN I KNOW’ + SYDNEY & MELBOURNE SHOWS NEXT WEEK

by the partae June 30, 2017
written by the partae

Only a few short weeks ago Gordi shared a triple barrel of news revealing that her highly anticipated debut album Reservoir will be released on Friday 25 August via Liberation (Jagjaguwar internationally), offering the first taste of music from the album with the stunning track ‘Heaven I Know’ and word that she is returning to Australia for two special, intimate headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne ahead of supporting Asgeir on his Splendour in the Grass sideshows.

Today it is with great pleasure that we reveal the stunning clip for Gordi’s ‘Heaven I Know’. Directed by James Soldan, Sophie Payten (aka Gordi) explains the concept behind the emotive clip:

“The video communicates simply the tragedy of growing apart. There are elements and forces that will wedge themselves between two people – people that have known each other deeply, only to eventually bend and break. No matter your struggle, sometimes the storm is inevitable.”

WATCH ‘Heaven I Know’

‘Heaven I Know’ is the first sample of what is to come from Gordi’s debut full-length album Reservoir (out Friday 25 August) one of two tracks that were self-produced by the triple j J Award and FBi Radio SMAC Award nominee, and triple j Unearthed’s Most Played Artist for 2015.

Reservoir was written by the 24 year old artist from Sydney-via-Canowindra and co-produced alongside Tim Anderson (Solange/Banks), Ali Chant (Perfume Genius/PJ Harvey) and Alex Somers (Sigur Ros). It was recorded in Wisconsin, Reykjavik, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney.

In order to be able to write a song I need to go to that place, but I couldn’t live a functional life if I spent all my time in there.” – explains Gordi.

Following the release of some of her first tracks including ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’, ‘Taken Blame’ and ‘Can We Work It Out’, Gordi’s voice and her music very quickly caught the attention of her labelmates Bon Iver who asked her to perform backing vocals for them during their performance of “8 (circle)“ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at the tail end of last year. Gordi returned the favour with a breathtaking acapella cover of “00000 Million” which you can listen to here. Along with US supports for Bon Iver, she has also toured with the likes of  The Tallest Man on Earth, Highasakite, Local Natives and Of Monsters and Men.

Prior to returning to Australia next week for two intimate homecoming shows and to support Icelandic folk star Asgeir on his Splendour in the Grass sideshows, the award-winning singer-songwriter will finish up a two-month tour through Europe and the US, having played the opening night at Primavera in Barcelona, a Bon Iver curated event at Forbidden Fruit Festival in Dublin, a sold out headline show in London and a headline festival slot in a 12th century Viking hall in Bergen, Norway.
