Broken Social Scene

Following the release of February’s Let’s Try The After (Vol. 1), Broken Social Scene are thrilled to announce a companion EP, entitled Let’s Try The After (Vol. 2), which will be released via Spunk Records / Arts & Crafts on April 12th. The second EP’s first song, “Can’t Find My Heart,” can be heard now. “The theme is to continue,” says BSS co-founder Kevin Drew. “Sickness, suicide, uprise, love, death, betrayal, hurt, joy, sex, communication, battles and divisions … Let's just get to their after and start building again. How do we do it within the isolation of self prescribe empty popularity? How does the ego revolt? How does the heart win? Can it? Maybe after we will find out.” STREAM "CAN'T FIND MY HEART" Broken Social Scene is less a rock band than an embodiment of an ideal of music. The collective can be 17 musicians, brought together in search of a common goal – a unique clearing house for many of Canada’s most talented musicians – or Broken Social Scene can be the smallest, most intimate affair. Their two new EPs, Lets Try the After Vols 1 and 2, celebrate every facet of their creativity. Much like the songs on Vol 1, the tracks on Vol 2 are nakedly emotional, celebrating life in all its complexities – and which also, by extension, celebrate the very act of carrying on, for Broken Social Scene as a band and for us in a fractured world. Some of the songs on both EP’s were recorded for their critically-lauded fifth album, Hug Of Thunder but didn’t make the final cut; others are new creations entirely. All of the songs exhibit the band’s tremendous gift for pop that refuses to sit still, that combines experimentation and melody. Both EPs will be packaged on vinyl and released exclusively for Record Store Day 2019. Broken Social Scene recently knocked the socks off SXSW with eight tremendous shows, one of which featured a special appearance from Maggie Rogers on their seminal track “Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl.” Click HERE to see a clip of it. They also performed their Indie-classic You Forgot It In The People at the Arts & Crafts showcase. BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE RELEASE NEW EP ‘LET’S TRY THE AFTER (VOL. 1)’ // WATCH VIDEO FOR ‘BOYFRIENDS’

by the partae February 19, 2019
written by the partae

Broken Social Scene have unveiled their new EP, Let’s Try The After (Vol. 1) via Spunk Records / Arts & Crafts. All songs were produced and mixed by Nyles Spencer with the exception of “1972,” produced by the band’s own Charles Spearin and Joe Chiccarelli. “The point is to keep going,” says band leader Kevin Drew. “We have more to give. These songs have lived beside us and became our commencement party while continuing together.  We hope you enjoy this EP for you and me.”

The band have also shared an all-gif music video by @WhatGIFs for single “Boyfriends”

The EP marks the band’s first new music since their critically acclaimed 5th studio album, 2017’sHug of Thunder, which saw the collective exploring new ground while maintaining the awesome dynamics that have made Broken Social Scene one of the most beloved indie bands of the last fifteen years.

Throughout their careers, the ferociously prolific supergroup have continued to release a multitude of projects, including most notably Kevin Drew’s work as producer and co-writer on Gord Downie’s posthumous album Introduce Yerself. The album debuted #1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums and won Drew and Downie “Songwriter(s) of the Year” and “Adult Alternative Album of the Year” at 2018’s JUNO’s. That same year Charles Spearin won “Instrumental Album of the Year” for his band, Do Make Say Think‘s album Stubborn Persistent Illusions. Vocalist Ariel Engle released her solo debut under the moniker La Force. Drew also made his theatrical debut with his play A&R Angels.

A Note From The Artist On ‘Let’s Try The After (Vol. 1)’

The ceremony of dying generations without any guidelines for how to move forward makes
these times easy for the mirror wars to continue.
We can hide in the beauty of what has been stolen from us because somewhere there is mystery in not knowing.
How can the ruined survive without a back up plan?
Let’s try the after.

Broken Social Scene Release Video For “Vanity Pail Kids,” ‘Hug of Thunder’ Out Now

by the partae July 18, 2017
written by the partae

HUG OF THUNDER OUT NOW ON ARTS & CRAFTS

Following a wave of praise for the release of Broken Social Scene’s newest album, Hug of Thunder, the band has released the video for the song “Vanity Pail Kids.”  Watch it HERE.
Broken Social Scene’s long-awaited return has proven worth the wait for critics and fans alike. Pitchfork gave the album its coveted Best New Music honor, writing, “On their first album in seven years, Broken Social Scene distill their sound to a vital essence. The band is focused and renewed, invigorated by the missionary spirit of their best work.” The New York Times wrote, “Broken Social Scene’s music rejoices in what clever teamwork can construct.” NPR also agreed, saying “Hug of Thunder does not skimp.”
Due to high demand, Broken Social Scene have added a second show at Neptune Theatre in Seattle on October 22nd, tickets go on sale on Friday, July 21st and will be available here.
Produced by Joe Chiccarelli with Nyles Spencer and mixed by Shawn Everett, Hug Of Thunder is everything BSS fans love from the Canadian collective and then some, an album overflowing with glorious open chords, multi-voice harmonies, spacious psychedelia-tinted breakdowns, and more.  It is a panoramic, expansive album that manages to be both epic and intimate; and like all things BSS, in troubled times, it offers a serotonin rush of positivity.  Since their inception in the early Aughts, BSS have always pushed sonic boundaries while remaining reverent of a perfect chorus; almost twenty years down the line, Hug Of Thunder sharpens that balance.  The record’s twelve songs refract the band’s varying emotions, methods, and techniques in ways that not only reference their other albums, but surpass them.  Hug Of Thunder is righteous but warm, angry but loving, melodic but uncompromising.  And if you’ve ever fallen in love with Broken Social Scene – as many of us have – it is a perfect return that was truly worth the wait.

“An impressive return for a band that set the bar high years ago and continue to clear it with ease.” Under The Radar
“They’re still making songs that sound vast and cacophonous, tracks that are built to flood the brain with serotonin. ” – Noisey
“Soaring, rousing, and perfect for sunsets.” – Entertainment Weekly
“Filled with laid-back melodies and feel-good vibes-the perfect soundtrack for summertime.” ELLE.com
“Hug of Thunder is as attractively messy and untamed as Broken Social Scene’s defining work.” SPIN

“Broken Social Scene – bruised, beautiful and chaotically epic…Theirs is a breathtaking display of controlled euphoria.” —

The Guardian, September 2016
Toronto’s Broken Social Scene recently detailed their first album in seven years, Hug Of Thunder, out July 7th, 2017 on their label Arts & Crafts.  Produced by Joe Chiccarelli and mixed by Shawn Everett, Hug Of Thunder includes contributions from all fifteen original members of Broken Social Scene (see full list below), as well as new guest vocalist Ariel Engle.  Today, the title track of the album has been revealed via Zane Lowe’s show on Beats 1; click HERE to listen to it.  “Hug Of Thunder” follows the release of the song “Halfway Home,” which the band performed to rapturous response on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert at the end of March.

Broken Social Scene are also thrilled to announce their first full U.S. tour since 2011. Frightened Rabbit will support on select dates, as well as The Belle Game; tour dates are listed below.  For these dates, Broken Social Scene are partnering with Plus 1 so that $1 from every ticket goes towards providing access to arts education for young people in disadvantaged communities.  Tickets for all the band’s headlining shows will go on sale Wednesday, May 17th, via the Broken Social Scene website.   Additional dates will be announced soon.
Hug Of Thunder is everything BSS fans love from the Canadian collective and then some, an album overflowing with glorious open chords, multi-voice harmonies, spacious psychedelia-tinted breakdowns, and more.
Pre-order the physical album // Pre-order the digital album
A beautiful, limited edition vinyl version of the record is also available for pre-order.  It’s available in Coke bottle clear vinyl (Limited to 500, exclusive to pre-order purchases), 140g double-LP, gatefold jacket (matte UV), printed vinyl sleeves (matte UV), and a 28 page booklet with stitched spine affixed to jacket. Artwork layout and design for the vinyl were done by two-time JUNO Award-winner (and Broken Social Scene’s drummer) Justin Peroff and kimikimo.   LP includes the vinyl-only bonus track “Old Dead Young.”
