AT THE DAKOTA

What is your name and role within the band?

Jaxon De Santis and I’m the Lead Guitarist in the band.

How did the band start?

A few artists from different bands came together to form the project around 2014.

Where are you based?

Darwin.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

It certainly varies from time to time, normally it’s Dylan (Lead singer) that comes up with a melody or riff. We then work together and connect the dots for the track and viola, we’ve had other ways but that’s the most common way

What are you working on right now?

Currently working on some new tunes.

How did you find the recording process?

It was pretty straight forward, although our track “Arrow Holder” was written as were literally in the process of recording tracks which made for a unique writing process.

How you wanted the EP/album/single to sound at first, how that changed during recording?

Good question, obviously there’s a little difference between the live sound and the recorded product. The blending together of the instruments and vocals really came together for a nice finish where initially I was expecting a more live sound but I’m quite happy with this result. The sounds of the guitars (more for the lead guitar) were compressed really nicely which helps cut through the mix and give the songs some real character.

Stories from recording/writing?

Realizing that we wrote “Arrow Holder” with a little bit of a time limit, although we all back it in 100% on how it turned out in the end. Also recording “2:35” was quite hard for me and Dylan, there was no tempo so we had to really concentrate and pay close attention to  each other to get it right!

What is your gear setup?

Amp: Line 6 Combo

Pedals: MXR Analogue Chorus
MXR OD – 50
Boss Equalizer
Ibanez Tube Screamer
Boss DD 3 Digital Delay
Boss Chromatic

I need so much more stuff, we all do right?

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I do enjoy sports very much and I always imagine one of our tracks being played in AFL Grand Replays or anything awesomely shot ion slow motion. Doesn’t really affect the music, we make what we want to make and if it gets used for whatever reason that makes us happy.

How would you describe your music genre?

Indy, Poppy, Groovy and freshhhhhhh.

Do you know any music theory?

A very small bit, would love to explore more and put some solid time into studying it eventually. I believe it would open up my capabilities

What are your plans for the future?

Continue to create music with the boys and show it to the world. Travel, work and just keep enjoying myself, life is good.

How did you get into music?

Considering that both sides of the family are quite strongly musically orientated. I started quite late. I started playing at 16 because I listened to Silverchair’s album “Frogstomp” for the first time in ages and I completely immersed myself in it because I was simply obsessed.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Right this moment? Frogstomp.

If you mean recently, lots of Ben Howard and other soft acoustic artists. I can’t get enough

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Parkway Drive
The Getaway Plan
Ben Howard
Jack Johnson
Matchbox 20 (Their first album “Yourself or Someone Like You” is a very important to me but their other stuff certainly up there)

When are you playing next?

19th of August at the Railway Club Darwin, we’ll be ready.

DARWIN’S INDIE POP 5 PIECE AT THE DAKOTA ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF NEW SINGLE “BRAIN MATTER”

by the partae June 14, 2017
written by the partae

After releasing their sophomore EP Melt in April, the Northern Territory’s most exciting indie-groove pop band At The Dakota have announced their latest single “Brain Matter”.

Hailing from tropical Darwin, At The Dakota are a 5-piece comprising laidback dudes from the Top End. Their songs are unapologetically groovy and their lyrics are refreshingly cryptic. Their latest offering “Brain Matter” is no different with their signature addictive pop sensibilities and hooky, quirky lyrics and melodies.

The five-piece have had a massive couple of years supporting big name acts such as The Rubens, The Bennies, Saskwatch and Ball Park Music, winning the People’s Choice Award in the NT Song of the Year and being voted by the public as the local band to play at the 2016 BASSINTHEGRASS Festival.

The second single from the Melt EP “Brain Matter” is a song that came together quickly for the band. Stemming from personal experience, it is an ode to the overthinking and self-doubt that comes with anxiety. “Brain Matter” combines groovy reggae guitar sounds with dark, punchy lyrics that everyone can relate to.

“Jaxon came up with the chords to this song and we immediately jumped on it. Lyrically it is about my recent struggles with anxiety. I love the time change and instrumental part later in the song which I think captures how my brain feels so flustered and manic sometimes.”

“Ridiculously catchy” – The AU Review

“Tasty guitar hooks, reminds me of Two Door Cinema Club. Would jump around to this”
– Bridget Hustwaite triple J

“These guys are producing some of the most exciting indie rock we’ve heard”
– Tone Deaf

“Super-catchy” – The Music
