Supermild Weekender announces Motor City Drum Ensemble and more…!

With over 25 international and local acts covering live bands and DJs, Motor City Drum Ensemble will headline the impressive lineup. In a true display of his breadth, the stage will be handed over to MCDE to perform and curate the entire musical program on Sunday. Hand-picked by MCDE is world-renowned French funk and disco pundit, Jeremy Underground, plus two local acts: Melbourne’s jazz-funk collective 30/70, and the self-proclaimed purveyors of the intergalactic hard groove, WVR BVBY. Supermild will also welcome Acid Pauli, who will be returning to Australia for the first time in four years, and Nightmares on Wax, the master of the chill and downbeat genre.

Mitchelton’s The Muse restaurant will also host three Super-Sit-Up meals designed by a selection of Australia’s most esteemed chefs, including Peter Gunn, the award-winning owner and chef of IDES restaurant; Shane Delia, the operator and chef of Maha East Restaurant, and Ascot Food Storeowner Dave Stewart. There will be tickets available for various sittings spread across the whole weekend to suit everyone’s needs, and outside of the Super-Sit-Up meals the restaurant’s a-la-carte menu will be open for business. Additionally, food vendors will be accessible in the allocated ‘Supermarket’ section across the entire weekend.

The whole event will be accentuated with works from a selection of Melbourne’s finest visual artists includingVictorian College of the Arts awards winner Yandell Walton, and sculptural installation artist Emme Orbach. All ticket holders will receive access to Mitchelton’s Gallery of Aboriginal Art which will house a very prestigious and special exhibition: the works of world-renowned First Nations artist, Clifford ‘Possum’ Tjapaltjarri and his family, alongside real-time live paintings from family membersGabriella ‘Possum’ Nungurrayi and Michelle ‘Possum’ Nungurrayi.

Finally, the weekender will provide access to health and welfare practices, boat cruises and much more. With the fluid unification of these worlds in mind, a string of creatives at the top of their fields have been selected, to comprise the full 2019 Supermild lineup.

Sun-drenched, dubbed-out soul. Hazy memories of teenage halcyon days alongside smoky snapshots of days spent on the couch: No doubt the nineties chill out extraordinaire Nightmares on Wax springs to mind. He is the man behind the seminal classic album, Smoker’s Delight, a cultural moment that captured the nineties zeitgeist and sparked the explosion of the chill/downtempo genre. Today he is as relevant as ever – and it doesn’t take a musicologist to unpack why: his rhythms are infectious in their simplicity, blues-infused time signatures overlaid by Quincy Jones-esque synth lines, and the inherent fusion of relaxed dub, hallucinogenic hip-hop and Balearic melodies all coalesce to form the trademark Nightmares on Waxsound. Soundcloud

Jeremy Underground (FRA)

Jeremy is a passionate record collector and music lover whose collection and knowledge of house, disco, soul, and funk is encyclopedic. An honest and dedicated international DJ who focuses solely on selection, not production. One look at either of his Boiler Room performances shows exceptional ability and connection with the dance floor, and his now-classic b2b set with Motor City Drum Ensemble from Robert Johnson is considered a “DJing master class” (RA). 30/70 heartfully draw together deeply spiritual soul harmonies with well informed jazz-funk licks. While their music draws from majestic such as Alice Coltrane and Kamasi Washington, their sound is unmistakably their and unmistakably Melbourne. Ngaiire (Live)(AUS)

Known for her stellar vocal force, tight beats and big brave pop sounds, Ngaiire is a musical spotlight of her own. Drawing on her experiences growing up in Papua New Guinea, Ngaiire has a career that crosses genre and art form. Her work has seen her grace the stages of Glastonbury to Splendour In The Grass, national tours alongside artists as varied as Flume, Sufjan Stevens and Alicia Keys, compose music scores for dance companies and have her work performed at experimental art spaces including MOMA New York. She is the recipient of multiple accolades including four National Live Music Awards, an fBI Radio SMAC Award, and most recently received the inaugural Australian Women In Music Award for Creative Excellence. Soundcloud

Acid Pauli (GER)

Over the last 20 years, Martin Gretschmann has been exploring periphery fields of music. Psychedelic, adventurous and full of musicality. As solo act ‘Acid Pauli’, his music has soundtracked both Burning Man and the silver screen. In 2016 Pauli released ’Nana’, on Dj Koze’s Pampa Records, a highly melancholic composition and future classic. It’s been over four years since Acid Pauli visited Australia, andSupermild is pleased to be the host for his shamanic club sounds.

Not many Australian DJs can stand prouder on a global scale than our very own Late Nite Tuff Guy. A superhero of soul, memorably tough on idle dance floors. LNTG is synonymous with the sexiest of sets and the most credible of disco edits. Playing everywhere from Berghain to Bestival, and with influences ranging from Mancuso to Toto, Late Nite Tuff Guy is a new breed of disco vigilante, paying his respects to the past while thrilling the clubbers of today.

No other DJ duos have been better reared to steer Melbourne in the right direction than Otologic. Whether they’re growing their own local residencies, bringing international talent to Melbourne or being called upon to warm up for such legends as DJ Harvey and Andrew Weatherall or close the coveted Saturday night Meredith Music Festival slot, Otologic is cult figures of Melbourne’s underground. They co-founded theAnimals Dancing brand as a way of presenting their favourite international talent to Melbourne. DJ JNETT (AUS)

Inarguably the don of house music in Australia, Janette Pitruzzello aka DJ JNETT has brought the heat to Melbourne’s music culture since the early 90s, with an inimitable underground sound that truly defies any categorization. Her supreme turntable technique aside her boundless crates of house, techno, funk, soul, disco, dub, reggae, afro, Brasilian and hip hop consistently secure her place at the top. This eleven-piece disco band are Australia’s controlled burn specialists, blending disco and house into non-stop live shows. They are well versed in songs you know and love, deep cuts you’ve never heard of, and sleek original disco. Known for sparking the ‘Dance Party: Disco Inferno’ party series, this group of devoted musicians and performers hold a unique place within the Melbourne party scene. Website

Peter Gunn (AUS)

A chef who has earned his keep in Australia – whilst keeping diners guessing. Previously cooking in the fertile footsteps ofBen Shewery and Dan Hunter, Gunn now heads the discrete yet impacting IDES in Collingwood. An offering of invention and cultural distillation; of brave ingredient focus and unexpected gratification. Opening the Super-Sit-Uprestaurant, the IDES experience will host three sittings prepared and served by Gunn and his team. The dinner will waltz with hyper-local ingredients alongside endemic Australian botanicals. Expect some IDES cornerstone dishes alongside Supermild specials.

Shane Delia (AUS)

Shane Delia is best known in Melbourne as a TV celebrity, author, chef and owner of two very popular restaurants. Longest standing is Maha East, a restaurant which has gone from strength to strength since 2008, renowned for its fresh, unrestricted Middle Eastern menu. A regular participant inThe Age’s Good Food Guide, receiving the culinary affirmation of ‘hats’ annually since 09. David Stewart is a Gippsland born chef with over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Since moving from Gippsland at age 18, David has worked at a number of quality restaurants throughout Melbourne such as Hilton on the Park, The Vincent and Tender Trap. Ascot Food Store is an open, modern space which serves restaurant quality food within a cafe environment. There he runs the kitchen and maintains strong relationships with suppliers to source local and biodynamic produce. David has a strong focus on keeping the food in his cafe as sustainable as possible and using local produce where he can. His food is comforting, familiar yet exciting. Ascot Food Store

Yandell Walton (AUS)

Yandell Walton’s practice addresses human relationships with, and due to, the impacts of climate change. Whilst her work employs a digital medium it is utterly defined by the changes in our real environment. Her digital narratives shine a powerful light back onto us as humans and our impact. Immersive works that connect to the viewer, and the viewer to the challenges they face. At Supermild expansive works are set to inspire action from individuals as they come across them. The Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art was established byAdam Knight and Gerry Ryan OAM, who share a passion for indigenous Australian art. Exhibiting the outstanding work that continues to be produced in this field today, the gallery was created to provide an inspiring new space for locals and visitors to experience the artworks of Australia’s first people. During Supermild, the gallery will host the works of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and his family, alongside real-time live paintings from family members Gabriella ‘Possum’ Nungurrayi and Michelle ‘Possum’ Nungurrayi. Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri has had a remarkable and active career. His works are amongst the few indigenous contemporaries to be recognised by the international art world. Like Albert Namatjira before him, Clifford Possum blazed a trail for future generations of Indigenous artists; bridging the gap between Aboriginal art and contemporary Australian art. These works house knowledge and histories which are a privilege to be shared, they are the fabric of the land, from a living culture which is tens of thousands of years old.Mitchelton Gallery

Emme Orbach (AUS)

Emme Orbach is a Melbourne-based sculptural installation artist concerned with the anthropocene. Her practice explores ways in which systems of nature co-exist and collide with human-made structures over time. Among Emme’s best-known works is a ‘crystal’ series in which minimalist aluminium sculptures are submerged in a liquid chemical solution; allowing the residual growth of crystals to take over and encompass the form. Emme’s recent work has an environmental and political focus on the Australian recycling crisis, bringing light to many illegal stockpile sites throughout Victoria. Website
