What is your name and role within The Southern River Band?

Ah – the formal route, i’ll play. Sir, my name is Cal Kramer and my role in The Southern River Band is Commander In Chief.
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

At my Mum and Dad’s house and we generally have jam nights every coupla weeks.

How did the band form?

The band formed after a series of intersecting wet dreams during the summer of 2014.

How would you describe your sound?

I wouldn’t.

You’ve recently finished recording your second album in the later half of 2018, the album will be released in 2019, where and when did you record?

We recorded it in the later half of 2018 with Big Don Carter (Yes – the same Don Carter responsible for the neo-trance swamp blues revival in Coolangatta in the mid ’90’s) at Big Don Carter’s (BDC) Steaks ‘n’ Shakes, WA’s only Percussion themed Grill and Recording Studio.

What programs and equipment did you use during the recording process?

BDC doesn’t let anybody – and i mean anybody, especially us, know his secrets.

Who did you work with on the record?


What influenced the sound and songwriting for the record?

Traditional Waltz’ from the late convict era and Cold Chisel.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the recording process?

Lugging gear thru the kitchen. Tiff is the head chef, by name and nature.

What are your plans for the record?

Basically, for it to be everybody’s go to soundtrack whilst they’re making love.

What do you like to do away from music?

I nurture a small flock of Magpies named Rick, Kim, Agnes, Margaux and the baby who is yet to be named.

The band was picked by The Rubens to be part of the ‘Support Acts’ campaign that was presented by YouTube, Universal and EXTRA. Your clip has hit half a million views and counting.  How did this come about?

Someone somewhere, liked what they seen and heard (not to be confused with the Cow Social Pages – Scene and Herd).

How has this campaign effected the progress and coverage of the band?

Whenever our mates were watching YouTube and an ad would pop up, if it was our ad they were instantly at least 6 times more irate.

You’ve played a bunch of epic festivals in 2018 which include – Boogie Festival, State Of The Art Festival, Cherry Rock, Caloundra Music Festival, Byron Bay Guitar Festival, Nannup Music Festival, Blues At Bridgetown, Kyneton Music Festival – how do you prepare for each live show?

Find that piece of mind, man. Really, really align ourselves with each other, you know? Become at one with the music.

Favourite show of the year and why?

The Bachelor cos he’s just so fucking dreamy.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The crows that live in the trees surrounding my house squabble over whose getting the final chip out of the newest piece of litter from yet another stray McDonalds fries packet.

You’re the main support for the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets Aus national tour that has sold out! How did this support slot come about?

Good people taking pity on the less fortunate and offering the aforementioned less fortunate the opportunity of a lifetime.

What can we expect from these upcoming shows?

The time of your life, the day you found love and night everything changed, forever.

How did you first start playing music?

When i was about 4 i got a cassette player for my birthday.

What do you have planned for 2019?

Finishing off answering these questions and then heading to the pub, after that, it’s anyones guess.
