SCOTTISH PRODUCER MAKENESS SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘DAY OLD DEATH’

Out now on Secretly Canadian via Inertia Music

Since announcing his signing to Secretly CanadianMakeness, aka Kyle Molleson, is sharing another new track, ‘Day Old Death‘, from his forthcoming debut album due out next year. This follows the “thundering slice of electronica” of ‘Loud Patterns‘, in which Molleson “combines raw, organic drums and grating synth lines with ghost-like vocal melodies to create a track reminiscent of pop-laced EBM” (Mixmag).

‘Day Old Death’ took me by surprise. It was a Sunday and I was preparing to leave the studio in Scotland after a few days off work. The whole time there had been overshadowed by the passing of a colleague a week prior,” Molleson comments. “I sat down at the Korg PS-3100 synth needing a break from very slowly packing flight cases and tripping over cables. It has this micro tuning function where you can slightly de-tune each note and everything starts to sound a little more interesting and meaningful. Something about the pensive, meandering drone the synth was conjuring connected me with the feeling of hearing the news from the week before. I think pouring that emotion into music was the best way I could express how I felt.

From the expansive electronica of his debut four track Rogue EP in 2015 — a record that drew comparisons to Jon Hopkins — to 2016’s collaboration with Tri Angle Records Adult Jazz, and the post-punk flecked disco of single ‘Other Life‘, Makeness has always been keen to explore new landscapes. Like the “swirling, psychedelic” (Resident Advisor) ‘Loud Patterns’, ‘Day Old Death’ is another testament to this exploratory spirit and with it, his continued musical evolution.
