Where are you currently based?
Toronto Ontario, Canada.
Please tell us about the lyrical and musical inspiration behind your new single PDA?
Truth be told, the song was inspired by a poem I wrote while feeling quite insecure. My girlfriend had just gone back home to Montreal. She was late to her train and because of the rush we didn’t really get a chance to say goodbye. When I got home I started panicking and getting jealous and worried, so I channelled it into these lyrics. I later went to LA to write with Simon Wilcox, Tawgs Salter and Ron Lopata, and when I pulled the lyrics out they seemed a little ridiculous. I guess I didn’t feel so self-deprecating anymore. And so the song was made, and I think a part of it was letting go of those feelings of jealousy I had by making light of them.
Where and when did you record?
I recorded a lot of the demo versions for my record at Tawgs’ (my producer) studio in a small town in southern Ontario. Real rural vibe. After we had rough cuts of everything I brought the demos into Revolution Studios in Toronto and had by band lay down live takes etc. We had a great time doing that. After that I went back into the lab with Tawgs and we produced everything around for about a month. Once it was finished a couple top fans came into Revolution Studios with me and we listened to it all the way through. That was pretty amazing.
Did you collaborate with anybody? If so, who?
Tawgs Salter, Simon Wilcox, Todd Clark, Ron Lopata. All incredible mentors and friends to me.
What can we expect from your live shows?
You’ll have to come and see for yourself.
How do you prepare for each show?
Chug water, panic, jump up and down, sit, repeat.
How did you first start playing music and what inspires you to write and play music?
I got a guitar when I was 10 as a gift from my parents. I never put it down after that. I think each person needs and deserves something or somewhere they can go to where they feel like they own that space, and music quickly became that for me.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
LCD Soundsystem. Francis And The Lights. Alvvays. Paramore and Damien Rice are my last 5 songs played on my phone. Also: my parents’ advice.
Recording/Writing: I have a little studio in my house in Toronto where I work on ideas. I use Logic Pro X (although I’m getting into Ableton Live), have a Dave Smith Prophet Rev2 Analog Synth, a Teenage Engineering OP1 (amazing for sounds and creativity), Yamaha Reface CP (essential!! used this on PDA), an oversized collection of guitars (guitalele is crucial), a couple of mics (Sure SM7b is my fav for quick recording). All I really need…..for now.
What do you have planned for 2018?
Favourite food and place to hang out?
Oysters, Jerk Chicken, Sushi, Pizza (in no specific order).
Wherever my cat and girlfriend are.
Scott’s latest single PDA – from the Hôtel de Ville album – coincides with his first Australian tour.
