What is your name and role within the band?
Richard Gilbert.
I am a solo act. Guitar and Vocals.
How did you start?
in 2004 I was encouraged by my oldest son to take my music public. It was a very frightening thing to think of. Singing to me is one of the most personal things you can do in front of people. Especially intimate songs that you wrote. But, now I am so glad I took his advice.
Where are you based?
I live in Denton TX. But, I’ve moved a lot. Arlington TX, Santa Fe NM, Los Lunas NM, Ruidoso NM and Breckenridge TX.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Normally once the song idea comes, I work on a tune. I make the verses fit the tune. I also like to make my words unique. Something to catch the attention of the listener.
What are you working on right now?
I have several new songs ready to record. A couple of road trip tunes, two love songs and a breakup song. Hopefully, I will get in the studio soon and see what happens. In the past I have included other artist on my cd’s. But, my fans want me to do a more raw. Just me and the guitar.
What is your gear setup?
Fairly simple. A Shure55 mic and a Taylor 210e Acoustic/Electric.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
Travel when I can. New towns and the open road always give me ideas to write. But, I like my down time with friends and family too. We have some great places to grab food or a good beer in Denton.
How would you describe your music genre?
My son would tell you it’s Acousteclecticpop. But, it’s really folk. Some songs come off a little more folk pop.
Do you know any music theory?
I don’t, but wish I had learned music theory. I know I still could. I think I am just comfortable with the way I am going right now.
What are your plans for the future?
To continue having fun playing my songs to people. Would I like to be discovered or maybe have one of my songs recorded by someone further up the ladder? Yes!! But, I am working now on playing festivals and would like to travel overseas to see how I am accepted.
How did you get into music?
Listening to a lot of James Taylor and Bob Dylan made me want to get a guitar. So, I would sit i my bedroom and practice chords. I would buy sheet music and cover JT, Elton John and others. Eventually I started writing my own songs.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Damien Rice, Bring Me The Horizon, The Decemberists, Amos Lee, Sufjan Stevens and Jessie Frye.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Damien Rice, and Gordon Lightfoot.
When are you playing next?
The Wildflower Arts & Music Festival May 20 1:00pm on the Goose Island Stage.

Congrats, Richard, for all the way you’ve been through ! 🙂
And, as a French listener, I would say it’s folk music… 😉
