Premiere: Sydney’s dip with Hollywood Astral Projection Clinic x Interview

by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Eora country, Australia.

How did Dip come about?

dip came about in a warehouse in 2020. We bonded over our love of cathartic heavy noises, and encouraging the darkest strangest musical ideas we could imagine. Our first song was a 2 minute piece called ‘bash your head against a brick wall’ and I’d say that expresses our fun and conceptual approach.

What’s been happening recently?

Lots of writing. We have an ep coming out. We have a new guitarist who we adore. We have been amping up our live theatrics. We are calling 2023 ‘the endless tour’ and are playing a lot, Sydney over, and out of state.

Your latest single ‘Hollywood Astral Projection Clinic’ is out on Jan 27, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Spooky dusty jazz, film noir, and sci fi. Then we made it punk.

How did you go about writing this single?

Dil had a semitonal riff with a slow black keys feel to it. Al had been spinning a lot of QOTSA and said ‘double the speed of it’ Chris put a dark mod bassline on it, and it became a whole vibe that made us giggle.

Why is the single called what it’s called?

Hollywood Astral Projection clinic is a niche internet conspiracy. I  won’t go down that rabbit hole, but the title inspired an abstract riddle of lyrics about self help gurus and internet celebrities capitalising on personal growth.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We worked with George Georgiadis. He’s amazing. We did it out of Def Wolf studios in kernel. Live takes and overdubs. So many pedals. Distorted everything. Tape.

Do you have an EP in the works?

We have an ep coming out. It’s called ‘Red Herring’ and it’s our most ambitious, sincere and outrageous piece of work all out once. This is the second single from Red Herring.

Who are you listening to at the moment and what or who influences your music?

Between us, it’s so wide. Attic is Ross & Trent Reznor, Wolf Alice, Temples, The Smile, and shout out to Black Foxxes (an amazing band out of the UK who we’ve been told we sound like)

Please tell us about any future music:

Well we are getting this EP out, but in the meantime we have chopped our google drive down to 18 demos, so once we whittle those down, we will be back in the studio.

What’s planned for 2023?

So many shows. Getting out of state.

Any shows coming up?

03/02 at Yullis brews with our comrades Second Idol.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Ona. Marrickville. We all love coffee. Good place to meet for pivotal conversations.

Upcoming Gigs:

20th January – Towradgi Beach Hotel – Wollongong

3rd Feb – Yullis Brews – Sydney
