Record Store Day – Saturday 22 April 2023

Record Store Day – a global celebration of the indie record store space and the largest event on any music collector’s calendar – is rolling into town for its 16th year on Saturday 22 April 2023 and today, Record Store Day Australia is thrilled to reveal the top-tier list of local RSD releases, which boasts releases from iconic Australian artists and some dream collaborations.

A who’s who of Australian artists plucked from a range of genres, the all-star cast of RSD specials includes Peking Duk w/ Darren HayesBlueyBall Park MusicClose CountersConfidence ManElla ThompsonForest ClaudetteGUM / Ambrose Kenny-SmithHugo BasclainOcean AlleyPenny IkingerPolish ClubUnderground Lovers and Winterbourne.

This list of Australian Record Store Day specials joins the Official Record Store Day Release list announced last week, which featured exclusive RSD titles from some huge names like The 1975, Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, Maya Hawke, Kasabian Vs The Prodigy, and stacks more.

In an extraordinary Australian collaboration, Peking Duk’s 7″ RSD offering shares a reimagined version of Savage Garden‘s iconic track, ‘I Want You’, featuring Darren Hayes.

“‘I Want You’ is one of the most iconic songs in history,” says Peking Duk’s Adam and Reuben. Growing up we would play it back-to-back along with all of Savage Garden’s catalogue of incredible music. We had an idea to remix ‘I Want You’ so that the song can be re-introduced again, especially to the world of clubs and dance music.”

Releasing on vinyl for the very first time, Underground Lovers’ 1999 album Cold Feeling has been given a fresh vinyl master by Don Bartley especially for Record Store Day, and will be available on both white and clear vinyl editions.

“We have been releasing a lot of our early albums on vinyl over the last couple of years and ‘Cold Feeling’ was next in line,” says founding members Glenn Bennie and Vincent Giarrusso.

It has never been released on vinyl before so this is such a thrill. We are so grateful that it can be part of Record Store Day in 2023.”

RSD 2023 is honoured to include Penny Ikinger‘s latest album, Travels and Travails, on the list of Record Store Day specials. Released by Off The Hip Records, Penny’s mesmerising new body of work covers 20 years of an enthralling career, and is inspired by her experiences, as well as the obstacles and tribulations of being an artist.

An explorative and raw documentation and celebration of Penny’s collaborations with artists from France, Australia, Japan, and the United States, Travels and Travails includes both live and studio recordings, some of which are previously unheard, deep-cut tracks, while others are reworkings of songs from her earlier outputs.

Each year since 2008, Record Store Day takes over Australia and the world’s independent record stores on the third Saturday of April for a massive day of crate-digging, exclusive RSD offers, in-store performances from local artists and DJs, artist signings and more.

With hundreds of exclusive titles penned for the 2023 RSD Release List, it’s time to start thinking about your wish lists and getting in touch with your local participating store and see what they’ll be ordering via the store locator on www.recordstoreday.com.au.

Record Store Day aims to spotlight and give back to the passionate folk behind the front counter, who share access, knowledge, and an undying love of the world’s best music. Moreover, in-person Record Store Day events and activations will be held at participating stores across Australia, with many retailers offering extended trade, special deals and in-store performances amongst plenty of other fun activities.

Check out the complete list of RSD Australia releases via the Record Store Day Australia website, and be sure to support your local indie record store when Record Store Day 2023 rolls around this year.
