Background
Scienceworks regularly produces events for 18+ audiences. These events involve opening Scienceworks’ exhibitions after hours, and often include expert talks, Planetarium and Lightning Room shows, live music, bars, and dining. These events offer opportunities for adults to visit Scienceworks after hours in a child-free environment to share a drink with friends, and explore big ideas in science and technology.
Party Beyond at Scienceworks
This April Scienceworks will host Party Beyond, an after-hours party that blends music and science into a completely unique experience. This will be the second edition of Party Beyond, following a sold-out event in June 2018 which featured musicians, DJs, late night drinks and eats. For this event, Scienceworks is taking a different approach to the programming and asking local DJs and musicians to respond to the different exhibition spaces with a themed music concept to be performed in the space of their choosing.
Where/when
Scienceworks, 2 Booker St, Spotswood
Saturday 27 April, 2019
Doors open 6.30pm. Event ends 10.30pm
We want you!
Are you a musician or DJ with an interest in science or performing in unique venues? We want to hear from you! We are inviting expressions of interest (EOI) to perform 1-2 sets in a specific exhibition, with the set crafted to respond to the exhibition’s content. We’re particularly interested in hearing from artists based in the West.
Due to the massive tech requirements for this event, we’ll mainly be considering DJs and acts with minimal equipment and set up. If you’re a band with heaps of members and gear, we probably won’t be able to accommodate you, but feel free to submit an EOI so we can consider you for future events.
We are seeking EOIs for six spaces in Scienceworks (although we may not have performances in all six spaces on the night). Details of the spaces are below.
Completed EOIs are due by 9am on Tuesday 12 March.
Exhibition Gallery Spaces

Admission Foyer
This is where guests will enter the event and purchase tickets or have their ticket checked.

Museum of the Moon
Museum of the Moon is an astounding seven metre diameter spherical sculpture featuring large scale NASA imagery of the lunar surface.

Think Ahead
Think Ahead imagines how advances in science will change the way we live. Different sections explore the future of cities, space, medicine, food, and the human body.

Ground Up
Ok, yes, this IS a space built for 0-5 year olds, BUT Ground Up was one of the most popular galleries at our previous 18+ event! This STEM-based, imaginative exhibition is full of colour and play. There’s heaps of exhibits for building things, a giant car wash, wind tubes, a whole wall of light-up switches, and heaps more.

Sportsworks
Get your body moving in Sportsworks. You can race against Cathy Freeman, try out for soccer goalkeeper, and zoom down the slopes in our snowboarding simulator.

Beyond Perception
Reflecting the latest and greatest stories from science and technology, Beyond Perception immerses you in large-scale experiences that reveal the invisible fields and forces that surround us, such as gravitational waves, invisible light, sound and aerodynamics, and demonstrates current research which is continuing to uncover amazing hidden worlds around us.
Note that we are not seeking EOIs for the Planetarium for this event, but may do so for future events.

What to do now
You’re keen? Great!
You’ll need to come and check out your chosen exhibition gallery at Scienceworks to enable you to put together your performance proposal. Scienceworks is open 10am – 4:30pm every day, and we can arrange for you to enter free of charge in order to view the space. To organise this, please contact Kate Barnard via swprograms@museum.vic.gov.au.
Once you’ve got your plan together, complete this online form.
We’ll have a look at submissions and choose the acts that we think will work best in our space and for our audiences. We will only choose one act per exhibition, and may decide not to have acts in some exhibitions.
