Palmar Arch

Where are you currently based?

Hey, I’m based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire in the UK.

Please tell us about the name change from Superbloom to now Palmar Arch:

The new name was primarily due to a change in core band membership – I’ve rebranded from a two-piece to a solo project, although I still play and collaborate with other musicians.

A Palmar Arch is a curved blood vessel in the hand. I can’t remember how it originally came up in conversation, but I liked the phrase as soon as I heard it. It just rolls off the tongue!

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been working on the rebrand for about 6 months. This included shooting a new music video and making some more artwork for Sunscript, which I always planned on re-releasing to support the name change. It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve enjoyed it, and it’s so good to see it all come to fruition.

Aside from that, I’ve been writing more music. I’m more or less always recording demos, but I went back into the studio at the end of last year to track a few new tunes.

You’re re-releasing your single ‘Sunscript’ please tell us about this:

Sunscript was the debut single of the former band, and looking back, I don’t feel as though it fulfilled its potential, in terms of reach. I still really love the track, and thought a re-release of the first song I put out would accompany the rebrand really nicely. Palmar Arch has come a long way since the initial release, and I can’t wait for the track to reach more listeners.

Where did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I’ve recorded more or less all my music at Broadfields Studio in Watford, with producer Tom Mitchener. I’d describe his style as relaxed but efficient, and it’s always a great experience working there. The production of Sunscript is probably my favourite of all my music so far. I love how raw and heavy it is.

I also worked with Ed Sokolowski (EAS Studios) in Milton Keynes for the acoustic version of Paper & Stone. Tom and Ed are both amazing producers; I’m lucky to have them close-by!

How did you approach the recording process?

I’ve worked at several music studios with several producers in the past, and I’ve definitely learned what works best for me in this time. I record solid demos at home beforehand, and always go in with a clear idea of the sounds and tones I want to create. For me, it’s also important to be as well rehearsed as possible; it saves time, money and keeps stress to a minimum. Studio sessions are one of my favourite parts of being a musician, so the more relaxed it can be the better.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I normally listen to tonnes of music, but I’ve been more into podcasts recently (James O’Brien’s been keeping me up to date with current affairs). Having said that, three albums I’ve recently had on repeat are Alexisonfire – Otherness, Porcupine Tree – Deadwing, and Jessie Ware – What’s Your Pleasure?

What’s planned for 2023?

I’ve wanted to release a full-length album for a while now, so that’s next on the agenda. All the music’s recorded, and I’m excited to get stuck into all the other creative aspects. Artwork still needs to be shot, along with another music video, and there’s some finishing touches to add to the mixes. I can’t wait to get cracking!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I like this question. I love food. My favourite cuisine is probably Italian, although I like Indian too. And Thai. And Mexican. I just love it all!

I’m getting more and more anti-social as I get older, so hangouts aren’t what they used to be. I like going out for some food and a few drinks somewhere local, so I don’t have to worry about the calamity that is public transport. I’m also a bit of a sports fanatic, and play a lot of five-a-side.
