“[On Automatic]…Mildlife’s second wave is far from mild”
The Age

“…a bit like if Alan Parsons Project had invented acid house”

“It’s jazzier, groovier and harder-hitting, but somehow also softer to the touch. ‘Automatic’ keeps you guessing right up to the final seconds of each song.”

Overnight, acclaimed Melbourne psychedelic jazz outfit Mildlife took home Best Jazz Album at the 35th annual ARIA Awards for their 2020 LP Automatic.

Debuting at #8 on the ARIA Album Charts upon release, Mildlife’s second record made a step-change from their 2017 debut, Phase. More disciplined, directional and arguably more danceable than its predecessor, Automatic has garnered acclaim from NME AU (named in their Best Australian Albums of 2020), Mixdown (“their most immersive listening experience to date”), ClashMTV AUBrooklyn Vegan and more, including four star reviews from The Sydney Morning Herald (“a skillful juggle of sonic ingredients”) and The Music, alongside a four-and-a-half star review in Rolling Stone AU (“the record of a lifetime”). With airplay across triple jDouble JBBC Radio 6Music and feature album placement across FBi Radio2SER and 3RRRAutomatic has also nabbed Mildlife nominations for Best Live Act and Best Group at the upcoming 2021 Music Victoria Awards, alongside being shortlisted for Best Independent Jazz Album at the 2021 AIR Independent Music Awards.

In March, the band travelled by boat to South Channel Island to perform tracks from both Phase and Automatic for their Mildlife Live From South Channel Island motion picture. Spanning just over an hour, the performance sees the band masterfully recreate the magic of their much vaunted live shows, framed by the gorgeous Port Phillip Bay. Released on a deluxe vinyl edition in July via [PIAS] Australia, the eight tracks from this one-off performance are set to be released digitally on December 3, available to preorder here.
