“The boys are making huge waves with their restrained but crafty approach to electronic music.” – Purple Sneakers
“A simple but deft production touch.” – triple j’s Richard Kingsmill
“Dreamy indie-electronic sounds.” – Pilerats
More than a year on from the release of their last single, Melbourne producing prodigies SŸDEtoday finally return with a brand-new single in the form of ‘Her Touch.’
SŸDE, aka the duo of Will Hydeand Mitch Stephens, are former triple j Unearthed High finalists that have racked up tens of millions of streams and thousands of fans, thanks to the success of singles – ‘Orbit’ (feat. Ashe), ‘Above The Clouds’ (feat. Olivia Reed), and their last effort – ‘Follow Me’ (feat. Evan Klar).
It may be a year in the making, but the duo’s new track picks up right where their last left off. Composed of sustained piano chords, sparse percussion, warm guitar strums and a raspy, vocal feature – the new single incorporates SŸDE’s signature arrangement style of lacing acoustic and digital elements together to form their unique brand of intelligent electronic music, but has a definite, newly-honed production style that signals the ongoing professional maturity of the former teenage wunderkinds.
The new single has been released with an accompanying video that follows a young, professional looking man paddling a canoe into the wilderness and rediscovering his wild side. Those scenes are interspersed with footage of a mysterious woman – the visuals working with the lyrics to create an ominous feeling to the song as a whole.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Her Touch,’ SŸDE says, “The song is about passion, feeling passion and then the sensation of not caring once you’ve lost it.
“We wanted to touch on the craziness of feeling love so intensely but then the flip side when you’re out of love. It’s like you completely forget the feelings you once had when you were in that relationship.”
Once again, the duo were amazingly able to produce the record from the comfort of their home studio, managing to capture a sound most artists would need a major recording studio in order to even get close to.
“The production started by throwing down a few chords on the piano,” they explain. “Then we built everything up from there by adding some guitar and building it to a place where we felt it had some groove in the chorus. We recorded everything production wise in our home studio, which was cool as we just went with the flow. It feels more special to us to be able to record everything on the fly and think later.”
‘Her Touch’ now stands alongside a collection of music that bawks in the face of the modern music industry’s pressure to have a high output, with the duo choosing to pursue quality over quantity with their releases – ‘Her Touch’ is only their fourth single in four three years. It’s that approach of keeping their fans guessing and clambering for more music that has made SŸDE one of the most exciting and enigmatic acts to emerge on the music Australian landscape in recent years.
The release of ‘Her Touch’ is set to be the next step in the ever-growing career of SŸDE, who have previously secured fantastic triple j radio support throughout their career, racked up a ton of blog and music media support, and landed a huge marketing campaign sync with credit giant VISA with ‘Above The Clouds’ feat. Olivia Reid.
