Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? Hello! Nice to meet you! We’re based in Berlin. I guess we all know the strong music scene over here. Still one of the best places for creativity and we’ve great artist, clubs and vibes over here.
You have a new release on Mother, please tell us the name of this track and what influenced the sound and songwriting/production for this track: Yeah it’s an EP with two tracks. The first track is called „Disco Ballz“, which is more Disco and French House inspired with a soulful vocal on top. When we produced it, we thought about a lot of disco balls…hahaha Second one is called „Neva Gone“, which is like a classic soulful house jam with a sweet vocal on top. Both are typical Mat.Joe: Crispy and Urban.
Where and when did you record/produce? This time we enjoyed working in our Berlin studios. We had a lot of international shows in the last half year, so it wasn’t that easy to produce, but we’re on fire again haha!
What equipment and programs did you use? We’re working half analog and half digital plugins. Basses we play mostly with our Moog or using great plugins like Diva (u-he), SoundToys or Native Instruments. Programm wise we’re both working with Ableton 10 and Push 2, but also Cubase 9. Oh and for drums we’re using a new lovely drum tool, the Roland SPD-SX, which is also part of our hybrid live setup. We’ll keep you posted about it .
How did you first start playing music? Joe started already back in the days as a Hip Hop DJ before started to focus mainly on House and Techno. Mat selected music over the years before he finally started to DJ towards the end of 2011 in a small bar in Neukölln, Berlin.
Please tell us about your connection with the label: We know Nhan Solo for about 7 years now. He was actually one of the first guys to listen to our demos and sign our first record back then. So when he asked us for some tracks for his label Mother Recordings, it was a sure thing to do.
How has this years Summer treated you? Please give us a run down of what you’ve been up to: Oh we had a great summer! Played a lot of festivals from Tomorrowland, Electric Forest to Fusion Festival and played great shows on Ibiza this season. We also enjoyed a great summer in Berlin (one of the hottest since years) and made some new tracks in the studio.
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019? Making more music, playing new places and lounging our own label.
Please describe how you like to work / produce in the studio: It always depends, as we’re both are producers. So mostly we’re doing sketches and send them to each other…if it fits, we work it out together or we just do a session in the studio. Important: Good vibes only!
How did you start playing live and how would you describe your live shows? We just started our live project. As already mentioned it’s more like a hybrid DJ set, which means we’re mashing up our DJ performance with some live tools like drums, sampled bits and some other analog stuff.
What do you find most challenging and rewarding when on tour? For sure less time in the studio and not being in your own bed are not an ideal thing but seeing different cultures around the world and putting those inspiring moments in your creativity is a big thing and we appreciate it more and more while being on the road.
What do you like to do outside of music? Both of us have a strong skateboarding background so we’re still surrounded by and living this lifestyle. We’re also big fans of urban fashion…so a bit of shopping is never wrong haha…and of course enjoying delicious food is super nice and adds nicely to our addiction with ice cream! 😀
Favourite food and place to hangout? Pizza, salads and ice cream as favorite food and Tempelhofer Feld Berlin, a couple of bars and restaurants in Berlin (too many to name a few!) or Mat‘s balcony are always good places to hang out.
