MARSICANS

by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

I’m Rob. I play bass and keys, and sing a bit. I also play the guitar occasionally if I’m allowed. Am I doing too much?

How did you start?

Marsicans started in high school playing covers in assembly. I joined the band a little later when we all knew there was nothing else we would rather do with our lives.

Where are you based?

In a windowless rehearsal space in Leeds.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Usually James or myself will write the bones of a song on an acoustic guitar or piano. We then take those ideas into the aforementioned windowless rehearsal space and embellish them into full-band arrangements.

What are you working on right now?

As I write this we are on our biggest tour to date supporting our labelmates, a band called Natives. We did manage to lock ourselves away for a bit before this to write some new music though.

What is your gear setup?

Bass: 1978 Fender Musicmaster > Korg Pitchblack Tuner > EHX Nano POG > EHX Bass Big Muff > EHX Superego > EHX Holy Grail > Ashdown MAG 300 Combo.

Keys: Yamaha stage piano far too big for my needs > Nord Rack 2 Synth via midi.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

Watch Police Interceptors and drink tea. Hopefully neither encroaches on our music.

How would you describe your music genre?

Indie-Pop I suppose. Sometimes it’s heavier than that, sometimes it’s not.

Do you know any music theory?

If I had a gun to my head then maybe, but I have probably forgotten most of it.

What are your plans for the future?

Be in a band until society deems it completely unacceptable, then have a breakdown.

How did you get into music?

My brother is a musician and he started a band. I always thought it was really cool.

What are you listening to at the moment?

James Carr’s version of the Bee Gees’ To Love Somebody.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

The Maccabees, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Kanye West.

When are you playing next?

Tonight in Birmingham. Tomorrow in Nottingham. Day after in Brighton.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

This morning for my breakfast I had banana, grapes, strawberries and low fat natural yoghurt. Our manager says there is no such thing as low fat yoghurt but I don’t believe him.
