What is your name and role within the band?
I am Erica Joy the vocalist and writer for the band.
How did you start?
I started writing songs on job sites in empty houses in University selfishly for myself. It was what I needed to get out my general feeling at the time. After that I crudely recorded them and started playing acoustically with one other guitarist.
Where are you based?
Kansas City for days.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
I’ll strum between two or three chords and play around with what comes to me. If something is half way decent I’ll record it. At the end of the fairly decent recordings I’ll typically have at least a verse and chorus. Then I’ll go back and marinate on those two things and actually finish the song.
What are you working on right now?
I am working on restructuring and arranging old songs and breaking down all new songs for a live set. We will also be adding new instruments and breaking down others.
What is your gear setup?
Gear set up? We are arranging everything around actually at the moment so that will be tbd.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I love construction and generally building things so I do that part time. I also very much enjoy biking and beers and building fires when I can with my friends. Construction calms me down and makes me think so yes I believe it affects the music. My friends are incredibly supportive and create the first line of people at every show so it all trickles into music in some way.
How would you describe your music genre?
Dreamy Indie alt pop.
Do you know any music theory?
Only the theory of the deep feels. Really though no I didn’t even sing in the choir at high school.
What are your plans for the future?
To take over the world with sweet sounds. The five year plan is to amass some great musicians, keep promoting blow out shows in the surrounding areas and expand the tour base to farther and farther surrounding areas. The end goal would be to have two or three highly targeted tours a year. By targeted I would be going to see audiences who have already shown mad online love.
How did you get into music?
I briskly stumbled upon her one day. When taking to few classes at university I had too much time on my hands which led to me learning basic guitar. That provided enough framework for me to be able to write what was needed.

The Staves.. In the longggg run.

When are you playing next?
I’ll actually be jumping on the bill playing a show in Columbia called R-E-S-P-E-C-T: A Celebration of Women in Music at the Blue note Saturday June 24th.
