What is your name and role within Insanity Alert?
Hi, all my friends call me ‘Dio Cane Dave’, I play guitar and I write riffs – no more skills beyond that.
How did you start?
Our singer ‘Heavy Kevy’ moved from Netherlands to Austria for the love of love and the mountains and that’s where we all met, partied and started with the idea of forming a band. Then we got a call that we would be able to play our first show as a support of Suicidal Tendencies. We had two months to write songs for a set and that’s what we did! After playing in front of 5.000 people who all went crazy it was clear that we have to keep going. The second show was in front of 15 people however haha!
Where are you based?
47° 11° in the house!
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Usually I hang around at home and play the guitar lethargically. If I do that long enough, at some point I will coincidently hit an interesting note or rhythm and then I build up from that. Afterwards we meet in the rehearsing room and start to arrange and compose together!
What are you working on right now?
We’re starting to write songs for our third full-length album, coming out sometime next year!
What is your gear setup?
Since I’m endorsed by Ibanez guitars, I play an RG Prestige and I’m super happy with it. Beyond that I play a Hughes & Kettner Warp T Amp. It’s a pretty basic setup actually. No pedals. No tuner – as long as I don’t hear it, I’m not interested in it.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I love all the little things – Beer, food and the football champions-league alone are already worth it for living on this planet! I think all of the stuff you do affects your music in one way or another, but I don’t have a clue how it does that – and that’s the best part of it actually.
How would you describe your music genre?
It’s a perfect mixture of all the great elements of heavy music by excluding all of the shitty ones.
Do you know any music theory?
I know some chords, scales and rhythm-patterns but I don’t think of them when I write music. And I would not pass any exam in a musical school for sure.
What are your plans for the future?
Healing the world with Crossover Party Thrash!
How did you get into music?
Lack of girlfriends and recognition – pure extrinsic motivation in the first place.
What are you listening to at the moment?
To be honest – nothing at all.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
The big five J’s: James Hetfield, Jimmy Page, Jeff Hanneman, Joey Ramone & John Lennon.
When are you playing next?
We’ll be on tour the next couple of weeks, we’ll play on festivals like Hellfest and have shows coming up with the legendary D.R.I. for instance. We really can’t wait to rage with them together!
