Henry Jamison’s debut album ‘The Wilds,’ an evocative work that showcases his unique storytelling talents, will be out October 27th on Akira Records. The New England native has earned acclaim from Vice Noisey, Consequence Of Sound and NPR’s World Café for his ability to find profundity in the mundane machinations of everyday life — finding deeper meaning in the light from flatscreen televisions, the woosh of grocery store ACs, and Lil Wayne lyrics. It’s a gift that has been passed along his family for generations.
“There’s definitely this bardic tradition in my family,” reflects Jamison. “I don’t know how much any of it means, but I was handed a set of skills growing up, and I had to learn how to develop them on my own.”
Raised by a classical composer father and an English professor mother, Jamison was drawn to music and lyrics from his earliest days, and he began recording his own homemade cassette tapes while he was still in elementary school. Travel back in Jamison’s lineage and you’ll find George Frederick Root, the most popular songwriter of the American Civil War era and the author of the iconic “Battle Cry Of Freedom.” Keep going even further to the 14th Century and you’ll find the British poet John Gower, who was known to be a friend to Chaucer and Richard II.
Jamison released his debut EP, ‘The Rains,’ in 2016. Tracks from that collection racked up more than 24 million streams on Spotify (the single “Reach Peach” has over 14 million alone) as his uniquely off-kilter brand of lyricism earned a swarm of critical acclaim, dates with Big Thief, Tall Heights, Lady Lamb, and now his first performances in Europe.
Recorded in a mountainside house in Goshen, VT with engineer/co-producer Ethan West, ‘The Wilds’ opens with choral strains that give way to Jamison’s understated prologue on “Bright & Future.” From there, the album takes shape: “The Jacket” seeks to find authentic connection in a synthetic landscape, while “Through A Glass” traces a knowingly petulant infatuation with startling self-awareness. Jamison’s scattered observations coalesce on the honest, uncertain “Real Peach”: “If all is fair in love and war, then I don’t know what we are fighting for.”
Henry Jamison is embarking on an extensive tour of Europe and North America. He performs October 5th in London at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club with Rosie Carney .
