What is your name and role within Hello Moth?
I am Hello Moth.
How did you start?
I took myself apart, converted myself to audio, and reassembled myself at various open mics and small stages around Calgary. There may have been a cocoon at some point.
Where are you based?
Calgary, a small town the size of a big city. Alberta, a modern province with down-home roots and values. Canada, a vast country with vaster heart.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
One time I wrote a song completely upside-down. When I turned it right-side-up to perform, most of it spilled out. I still really like it though.
What are you working on right now?
I just released a single called “ Take This Away ” and I’m working on recording two more songs to accompany it on a forthcoming EP to be titled “Nebula Songs.”
What is your gear setup?
As minimal as possible. An ancient Casio VL-1, a young Teenage Engineering OP-1, and tying it all together is a TC Helicon Voicelive 2 with secret weapon microphone MP-75. Keep my secrets safe, Partae.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I interact with people, which creates stories, which seep either abstractly or directly into my music.
How would you describe your music genre?
It’s a hybrid of sharp and soft, broken and mended, soulless and soulful.
Do you know any music theory?
Mostly music conspiracy theories.
What are your plans for the future?
The best-laid plans are out of our hands. Having said that, there will be the above-mentioned EP “Nebula Songs,” followed by live appearances in Canada and beyond.
How did you get into music?
By letting it get into me.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m writing my responses to this interview in a Calgary diner called The Beltliner. Currently playing over their stereo system as I write this sentence is “Hunger” by Frankie & The Heartstrings. Oh, wait, it just changed over to “New Direction” by Black Lips. They seem to like their indie garage surf rock here.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Top 5? Nah, I’m scared of commitment. But I like The Knife, Joni Mitchell, Eyedea & Abilities, The Flashbulb, and James Blake. Bonus round: Katy Perry.
When are you playing next?
Playing with Adera and Talltale on August 10th at Mercury Room in Edmonton. Wanna come?
