Harvey Sutherland returns today to share the stunning video for the lead single from the Amethyst 12″, a jazz-leaning broken beat odyssey born out of sessions with London-based saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Kahlil Memphis.

Directed by acclaimed visual artist Nic Hamilton (Kelela, SOPHIE, Hudson Mohawke), the video features Melbourne-born dancer Michael Scott-Kahans performing an arresting interpretation of “Amethyst”, choreographed by by Kalman Warhaft (Australian Ballet School, Opera Australia).

The dance cycles through a hynotising array of abstract, repeating patterns that bring to life the various dream-like states that inspired the track. The dancer travels through three altered states of consciousness, each one visualised through distinct washes of colour and fractured light.

Pilerats have today shared a stunning behind-the-scenes gallery of the shoot by photographer Lisa Businovski, which you can view here.

Director Nic Hamilton is a visual artist and director who has collaborated with artists including Kelela, SOPHIE, Hudson Mohawke and Bauer. He has created intricate visual worlds for record labels Night Slugs and Fade To Mind, and worked on projects for Red Bull, Kenzo and Warp Records. In 2017 he was commissioned  by Boiler Room to create a unique project with frequent collaborator Darren Cunningham – aka electronic producer Actress – alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra, which was presented at the Barbican.

Dancer Michael Scott-Kahans is a student of ballet and contemporary dance at The Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, and has performed in productions including Baz Luhrmann’s 2015 musicalStrictly Ballroom. Choreographer Kalman Warhaft trained at the The Australian Ballet School and was a member of Sydney Dance Company, before working with Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, and Victorian Opera in numerous productions, including as principal dancer with Opera Australia in Graeme Murphy’s production of Aida.

“Amethyst / I Can See” is the next step in an already-unpredictable career from Harvey Sutherland, a producer, DJ and funk synthesist from Melbourne. After steadily making a name for himself amongst Australia’s bubbling electronic underground, Mike Katz began to make international waves in 2013 with a series of successful 12” records under his nom de plume. Blending a broad array of crate-digging influences, his initial EPs have already been championed by international tastemakers like Gilles Peterson, Jamie xx, Disclosure, The Black Madonna, and Pete Tong. Sold-out shows with his impeccable live band followed around the world – including Glastonbury Festival, Nuits Sonores, Meredith Music Festival, Splendour In The Grass, and Freedom Time – alongside some unique side-projects: he recently performed an original cinematic disco suite alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as directing an east coast Australian tour with an 11-piece band in support of New York boogie icon Leroy Burgess.

“Australian Moog enthusiast Sutherland has found a spiritual home in south London. The result is this international collaboration: a soothing, strings-laden homage to 70s jazz-funk.”  – CLASH
“The latest twist in the eclectic Australian producer/musician’s winding path. A shift into blissed-out, graceful jazz and drum’n’bass-inspired rhythms.” – The Guardian

“Part acidjazz, part funk, part disco, it’s a euphoric celebration of clever musicianship and I am here for it. ” – Beat Magazine

“There’s a vibe to “Amethyst”, a sense of excitement and unpredictability to the whole thing.” – AU Review, Track Of The Day
