What is your name and role within the band?
Ross. I write songs, play guitar and synthesizers, and sing.
Where are you based?
Kansas City, MO, USA.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
The recording process is pretty interwoven with writing. I’ll usually write as I go, starting with bass or guitar and fill in other instruments. Vocals are a oft-dreaded final layer. Sometimes we’ll workshop arrangements as a band and sometimes the song is more or less done by the time the demo recording is done.
What are you working on right now?
Finishing up recording and mixing another full length album. Studio nerd time.
What is your gear setup?
Live I play a Rickenbacker 325 and a Moog Sub Phatty through a Supro Tremo-Verb, typically with a few effects pedals. Studio setup is always changing, but involves most of the same stuff.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I’m a software developer by day so I enjoy making goofy applications and experiments. It definitely affects the thought process behind arranging and recording music. I also like food, which tends to have a more immediate affect on the sounds I make, musical and otherwise.
How would you describe your music genre?
Pop songs from the squishy heart that only rock when it’s the best option.
Do you know any music theory?
sure.
What are your plans for the future?
Currently doing a week of dates on the west coast for the first time. Then back to finishing our next album and working on albums with friends.
How did you get into music?
Commandeering my friend’s Fostex 8 track digital recorder at 15 after buying my first guitar, and a mediocre elementary and middle school trumpet and euphonium career.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Thundercat’s Drunk, The Association, George Benson’s Give Me The Night, Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, Mort Garson’s Plantasia.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Donald Fagen, Chris Cohen, Judee Sill, Jorge Ben.
When are you playing next?
