What is your name and role within the band?
FDVM stands for Florent and Victorien. It’s our initials.
Within the duo, Florent is in charge of music selection for our Dj Sets and Mixtapes. He also handles most relations with DJs and clubs/bookers.
Victorien takes care of the music production and Marketing / Communication. That being said, we always make decisions together, so we are both working on a bit of everything.
How did you start?
We started 7 years ago in Lille (FR). While studying, we organized some of the biggest events in our hometown and from that we grew the desire to share more joy and happiness throughout the world. So we started producing music 4 years ago.
Where are you based?
Florent is based in Lille (FR) and Victorien is based in New York (USA).
Please give an example of your music writing process?
There is not only one way. However, most of the time, we start by finding the Singer / Songwriter we want to collaborate with. From there, we spend a lot of time on figuring out the vibe of the track and the message we want to share. We usually ask the Singer to write the song, so it’s as authentic as possible and they can really add their own emotions to the song. Afterwards, there is tons of back and forth and exchanges to perfect the sound. When we can, we spend time with the Artist in the Studio but sometimes, we have to do it all via Skype.
What are you working on right now?
We are working on a lot of music, talking to a lot of artists we love. We have a lot of tracks, probably enough for an Album but we are taking our time. About the Album, we should have one by next year. We are still figuring out the story we want to tell.
What is your gear setup?
As for the studio, we have a simple home studio in NYC. Some keyboards and a Mic. We produce on Ableton Live and love to use the Kontakt Library. We also own tons of small instruments like shakers and drums. In addition, we use a small hand-recorder for nature sounds and outside recordings.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
Florent : I run a lot while always listening to new mixtapes. This allow me to find the latest tracks. I spend a lot of time with my friends and recently we have been doing a lot of wine tasting.
Victorien : I spend a lot of time outside in nature. That’s where I find peace and harmony. I love to host my friends at home with a camp fire and good music obviously 😀
I travel a lot and get super inspired by the people I meet and their own stories / culture. I also collect world instruments and experiment with sound meditation.
How would you describe your music genre?
FDVM is kind of it’s own genre, it’s a mix of Folk, Deep House, Funk, Blues and Melodic House 🙂 We love what makes you smile or groove. We want the music to inspire and give joy to our followers.
Do you know any music theory?
We are working hard right now on learning it. For now, we use it mostly to design our live sets.
What are your plans for the future?
There is 3 levels of plans :
– We hope the “Supernatural” mixtapes and events will grow, expand to many cities and collaborate with more artists.
– We want to keep producing new music and ultimately release our first Album.
– We want to play everywhere we can.
Overall, we want to become the best artists we can be so we can make people dance all over the world.
How did you get into music?
Florent : Around 17 years old, every Saturday night with my friends, I was in charge of bringing new music to the party. That’s also how Vic and I met. I was bringing my music to an event and Vic did the same, so we had to find a common agreement, and it was pretty easy 😉
Victorien : I started Djing (well playing CDs 🙂 ) when I was approximately 8 years old. My parents love music so much, that I was playing for them and their friends at home. Later on, I bought my own little set up and started to Dj for small events like weddings and private company. Then I met Flo and we started to play in clubs…
What are you listening to at the moment?
Florent : These days, I listen to a lot of Funk, French Rap, Electro and Deep House.
Victorien : I listen to a lot of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Folk and also World Music.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Florent : The Blaze, Jamie XX, Passenger, Two Door Cinema Club, Paul Kalkbrenner.
Victorien : Melody Gardot, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Milky Chance, Mumford and Sons.
