’Stars’ is the scorching new single from Melbourne-via-Sydney-via-Perth based ratbag Denise Le Menice(AKA Ali Flintoff). As premiered on triple j’s Home & Hosed last night, the single stays true to Ali’s self-described pop/shoegaze style (Kylie meets Dandy Warhols) but takes flight thanks to her blistering lead guitar and the dreamiest and poppiest of all dream-pop melodies.
‘Stars’ follows on from Denise Le Menice’s debut single ‘Heart’, which was released to resounding acclaim by Barely Dressed Records and Remote Control at the end of 2018.
Ali’s remarkable gift for melody combined with the weight of her playing makes ’Stars’ irresistible. Ali describes ‘Stars’ as a song which encapsulates that feeling of finally feeling happy again – after having been in a period of total darkness. Ali wrote the song in Wollongong of all places – “I was staying at a friend’s house during tour and I was listening to the new Beach House album. I then got so inspired to write – I immediately demo’d half the song there, and then finished the other half in Hobart during a massive storm”.
Also released today is the video for ‘Stars’, a hilarious and adorable montage of clips of Ali as a young kid – edited from her family’s own home footage. The video symbolises a time of pure innocence and happiness – which the song itself is aiming to capture.
Having toured extensively in 2018 (as Denise Le Menice and with her previous punk rock outfit BOAT SHOW), Ali is now heading overseas to perform for the first time at SXSW in Austin.
