Crooked Colours

by the partae

How did you start?

Phil and Leon were hanging around the same group of mates in their late teen years and soon found out they both both shared a love for electronic music and quickly started jamming with some synths Leon had bought. This turned into recording a few jams and then paved the way to start a band which is where I jumped in. A friend of a friend knew someone that needed a drummer and so we all met up and after that Crooked Colours as we know it was born.

Where are you currently based?

We all lived together in a house in Perth but then decided to make the jump to the East Coast and so we are now primarily based in Sydney.

Please tell us about your recently released debut album Vera:

The skeleton of the album started in Leon’s parents beach shack in the South West of WA. At this time the album definitely wasn’t planned in terms of song structure so we weren’t really going for anything other than the fact we knew we wanted to write about 10 songs. And the fact that it took so long to write (18 months) meant we also had such a variety of different songs, a lot of which we had to cull because they didn’t fit the aesthetic of the album. Although once we had our 10 songs produced we were fortunate enough to work with Cassian (legend) who helped us to mix the album. We didnt really have too many lows during the writing process other than the fact it spanned such a long time but since we have finished we have been celebrating for 6 months!!

What are you working on right now?

We are just heads down getting this live show together. We want to expand the show from just playing each song in a row to having a fully fleshed show incorporating visuals and lights and different sound textures throughout. So we still have to see what we end up with! We have also started on 2nd album.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

We are definitely a social bunch so that probably keeps us out of the studio more than we would like but you know its all networking as well which can only help right?!

How would you describe your music genre?

Indie electronic music.

Do you know any music theory?

Definitely do! Leon and I both studied classical piano when we were younger and my dad is a drum teacher. Phil has also been studying musical theory for the past few years as well.

What are your plans for the future?

Initial future is to do this Australian album tour and then go to Europe in October and then hit up a few festivals around Australia in the summer and then maybe America early next year followed up by a second album which is in the works.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Alt J’s new album Relaxer has been on quite a bit. We are also digging that Halsey track Now or Never.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Crystal Castles

Booka Shade

Van She
