Coumarin

What is your name and role within Coumarin? I’m André and I’m the singer and guitarist of Coumarin. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? We are currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. We as a band are fairly new to the scene here so we have only been able to dip our toes into it a little bit. But in terms of going out, you won’t have any problems finding somewhere that plays your type of music. What's been happening recently? We just released our second single and video called 'Make It Right', which we are really excited about: https://youtu.be/VYp8_OmUhD0  Your new single 'Make It Right' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The main themes that inspired the sound and songwriting were regret and forgiveness. I always wanted to write a song about these seemingly simple but actually complex things and their interplay and find a sound and melody that could package that in a song that is not a super slow piano ballad. Where and when did you record?  We recorded the song mainly in our rehearsal space and in my bedroom over the course of this summer. What programs/instruments did you use to record? In terms of programs, we use Logic Pro X exclusively to record and mix our stuff. The instruments on the song would be pretty much the standard line up, nothing exotic there: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Synthesizers and Vocals. How did you go about writing Make It Right? The idea for the song itself is almost four years at this point, it changed a lot over the years and a lot of experiences have left their impact on the final version. Since mid 2015 I always had kind of a line out for the song, the idea for the lyrics and a part of the instrumental. A few months ago we had the version that I had known for years - already recorded and pretty much ready for mixing. One night around that time - at about 3 a.m. - I just started to play a whole new synth line along to the track that changed the entire character of the song, but in an amazing way. That synth line is what can now be heard as the main synth line in the chorus. So long story short, we recorded everything but the drums from scratch and we couldn’t be happier with it. What do you like to do away from music? I love to go to the movies or just to watch something at home when I find the time. Earlier this year me and a very good friend of mine wrote our first short film that I directed which we are currently putting the last finishing touches on - our keyboarder Pascal does the sound design on it. Who are you listening to at the moment? I can’t get away from the last War On Drugs record somehow, it’s so damn good. In terms of more recent music I was really surprised by the Brittany Howard solo album which is pretty rad. Our drummer Maksim and I share a love for Northlane who just put out an awesome album as well. What's planned for the remainder of 2019 going into 2020? People can expect a lot more music coming from us later this year and going throughout 2020 and beyond. We had a whole year long gap between our first single and Make It Right, which was unfortunate but necessary for us on a creative level. We are really excited looking into next year and to our future releases. Favourite food and place to hangout? We all love hamburgers, and our drummer really loves chocolate brownies. I like to hang out where good and inspiring people are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYp8_OmUhD0&feature=youtu.be Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coumarin_music/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/coumarin Website: https://www.coumarin.org
