What is your name and role within BATTS?

I’m Tanya and BATTS is my project. So I kind of do all the things.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m based in Melbourne, Australia. The music scene here is pretty incredible, you can go out any night of the week and find quality music and the musicians here are super supportive of each-other. It’s pretty unique, very diverse within genre’s and just really special.

You have an east coast tour this November where you’ll be hitting Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, what can we expect from these shows?

More than likely me talking too much, some space facts and lots of new songs. Also incredible support acts, I chose lots of acts around the East Coast I absolutely love, so make sure you get down early.

How do you prepare for shows?

I’m not a huge preparer to be honest. Although, I tend to try sleep more leading up to a show. Also I always take myself out for a nice breakfast the day of a gig.

What or who influences your sound/style?

Well Space is probably my biggest visual inspiration, and then Studio Ghibli films too. Also I like to read a lot and some artists that currently influence me a lot are; David Bazan, Andy Shauf, Sharon Van Etten, Big Thief and Sigur Ros.

Your new single ‘Gun’ is out, please tell us about the track as I believe it was written about fictional characters?

It is! I’m really happy with how this one turned out, it’s also the funnest track to play live with my band so live tracking it was a great time. It’s a fictional story based around addiction and tragedy. I feel humans should maybe just listen to it concentrating on the lyrics rather than me explaining what it’s about. I can’t explain it any better than the song already does.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At this exact moment in time I’m sitting at the Zoo at the Giraffe Cafe getting work done whilst listening to Nils Frahm – Solo album. Although here are the artists I’ve been playing on repeat of late; Canary, Boy Azooga, David Bazan, Kevin Krauter, Emma Louise, Andy Shauf and Big Thief.

Do you have any further recordings coming out?

I do, I’ve just started mixing my debut album. I believe there will be one more song from that released this year and then the album will be out early next year.

I hear that you have a passion for science and space, please tell us about this:

What is not to love about science?! It helps you make sense of things or even if you don’t understand it, it’s comforting that there are people that do, and with science we can help cure things, or understand things etc. I’m a huge lover of Space and I think everyone should be, after all the universe and us are all made of the same stuff right? Anyway I just find space so beautiful, magical and mysterious. There is so much we don’t know and I think it just blows my mind constantly when astrophysicists etc make new discoveries. For me it’s comforting to know how small we are as a planet and species in this huge universe. It doesn’t devalue what you are going through emotionally but sometimes it just helps me stop overreacting.

What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?

Well as I stated before I’ve just started mixing my album, once that’s done I have a fair few things to plan. It’s a concept album so there is a lot involved and many things I want to do with it, so I’m just working with my team on making them happen. I am also taking ‘Gun’ on tour in November in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. I’ll be playing a few shows I don’t think I’m allowed to announce just yet and I’ll also release a new song towards the end of the year and maybe take a little holiday.
