Where are you currently based?
I am currently based in Adelaide, South Australia. I grew up in Melbourne though and lived there till I was 12. Then moved here and have been in Adelaide since.
How did you first start playing music?
I have always been really interested in music, one of my first memories was playing the drums with pots and pans in the kitchen when I was 4. But when I was 14 I was really bored in quarantine and decided I wanted to start. I had been writing music since about 12, but something inside of me just snapped in quarantine and I decided to book a studio session. Best decision of my life.
What’s been happening recently?
Just life man. I’m currently in year 12 and have been balancing that with music. I recently played at my first ever headline show and it sold out in 4 days, so that was incredible. But otherwise, I’ve really just been making music and trying to create my own type of wave with the sound I’ve been trying to achieve.
Your latest single ‘Motion’ is out on February 10, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
The sound of ‘motion’ I’ve been really trying to break into lately. It’s a type of dnb/dance/rap genre that I’m trying to create and master. For me honestly, it’s the feel good experience of hearing the beat. It just makes me so happy and I want other people to experience that. As for song writing, the lyrics were majorly inspired by the show I headlined at and the past having had blown up.
How did you go about writing Motion?
For this song I actually didn’t write. I usually write, but I made this song right after performing at the show and I decided just to punch in. For me this made the lyrics more real due to the fact it was expressing what I was feeling in the time.
Where and when did you record/produce/master?
I actually recorded this song in my bedroom right after the show. I found the beat from a producer that had produced one of my previous tracks ‘minutes’ which is very similar style to motion. Once I heard the beat I knew it was the one. After all this I sent the raw vocals, adlibs, and Melody’s to my boy David (@prod_akay) and we just locked in. He usually takes most control of the mix and master, but I’m always there to help and kind of direct it in the way I want. But me and him locked in for real, his one talented kid.
How did you approach the recording process?
Recording this song I approached it still having all my energy from playing at my first show. After just having the crowd jumping, I couldn’t comprehend what life was. After this it seemed like all the lyrics just came to my mind when I was punching in.
Your debut show sold out, how was it and when and where are you playing next?
The show was truly incredible, no words can explain the feeling of that. Having what felt like the whole city sing your lyrics is such an unimaginable experience and I am forever grateful for everyone who came along. Also know better feeling then having everyone moshpit to your music. As of plans for the next show, I’m going bigger. Plans for the next Adelaide show are already in swing, and I have a special surprise for my Sydney people in the works too. Let’s just say it’s gonna be a party in every city within the next year or so.
You grew up in Melbourne and now live in Adelaide, how do the two cities compare?
Melbourne and Adelaide are very very different places. For people that don’t really know what Adelaide is like, it’s kind of like a big country town. Which compared to Melbourne is tiny. I feel like there’s numerous things that are different, but to go over all of them would take forever. For me though, Melbourne raised me, but Adelaide made me who I am today. So I have major love for both the cities.
What’s your dream show/festival lineup?
This is such a tough question. First of all I’m definitely putting myself (Arxhie Low) on it. After that I’ll probs have to go with destroy lonely, ken Carson, dc the don, skaiwater, slump6s and then the head liner playboi carti. I know this is a very odd line up, but all of these artists bring such a unique style of music that everyone should hear. Especially watching videos of all these artists listed perform and learning from them, i feel like we would all turn up at a festival.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment my music taste is all over the place, but I’m always looking for some new upcoming artists to listen to. I could list quite a few artists I listen to on the regular but recently, I’ve been huge on Riovaz and Skaiwater. Both of them have actually co-signed my music before. Personally I just think they are two incredible artists whom I look up to heaps and am major inspired by. I definitely idolise both of them.
What or who influences your music?
A lot of things influence me when I’m making music. But mostly it’s where I wanna be in the future, and past experiences. These two things play a huge role in my lyrics also and often what I talk about. Artists that I’m currently listening to or look up to also play a huge role in influencing my music. I don’t try to be like any artist, but I do take inspiration from other people.
What’s planned for 2023?
To put it quite simple, takeover. By the end of 2023 I want to be able to say I truly put my all in and be in a better position then I was this time last year. Of course I want streams, interviews, connections, and to grow my fan base. But to be precious, I just want to be able to say I’m doing better then I was last year. This year, 2023, I am truly putting my all in. And whatever happens, happens. Everything happens for a reason.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
I always get asked what my favourite food is and I think it’s such a tough question. I think probably fried chicken, and it could be in any style. I just love chicken. My favourite place to hang out would either be the city, any type of garden, the studio, or quite simply just my room. I find peace in being by myself, so wherever I am, as long as I’m happy. Then I’m okay.
