Following the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP last year, Eora/Sydney-based musician, visual artist and fashion designer Annie Hamilton emerges once more with new single, ‘Exist’, out now on [PIAS] Australia.
A song about making space in your mind for the small, beautiful things when the big things fall out of your control, ‘Exist’ was initially written and recorded in the midst of the city’s first lockdown, and arrives in the middle of another in a bittersweet full-circle moment. Co-produced by Annie Hamilton and Pete Covington (Thelma Plum, Middle Kids), the track lands alongside a heady fever-dream of a video directed by Jordan Watton that features costumes by Hamilton and a cameo from her TikTok-famous chicken, Grimes.
Of the track, Annie says “I wrote this song in the middle of lockdown last year, about someone very close to me who was going through a difficult time. It’s about focusing on the small things when you cannot control the big things.”
Propelled forward into the sunlight by dramatic drums, oscillating synths, soaring guitar and layers of strings, Annie Hamilton’s signature blend of dream-pop and alt-rock is on full display alongside her trademark matter-of-fact yet transportive lyricism, as she tells the subject of her song “You cannot sleep, but please keep dreaming” – a message as gentle and hopeful as it is timely.
Through cascading, ethereal vocals and sprawling instrumentation, Annie Hamilton boasts a unique ability to evoke memory and nostalgia within her music. In her short solo career, she has already completed tours with Julia Jacklin, Gordi and Jack River, as well as attracting the praise of triple j, FBi Radio, RUSSH and LNWY, and boasts strong support on streaming platforms, with over 2 million streams across DSPs.
