Name & Role?
Hey! My name is Andrej and I am a DJ and producer from Zadar, Croatia.
How did you start?
I started spinning around thirteen years ago, working some gigs at local bars and ever since then I haven’t stopped. Initially though my love for music began long before that when I was much younger. I used to hang out with the older kids in the neighbourhood. They constantly listened to electronic music at that time, and those beats just drew me in. The spark was ignited instantly and my passion towards electronic music has only grown stronger since. Needless to say, I haven’t looked back.
Where are you based?
I am currently based in my home country of Croatia, but I seem to have an extreme case of wanderlust, so I am always looking to expand my horizons around the world.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
I never create music, because I feel I have to. My music creating process is exclusively intertwined with a flash of inspiration that hits me at any random moment. As with everyone else in life, every day is different. Whether positive or negative, that particular moment that we experience is unique in itself. In my work I try to pick up on those vibes and recreate them into my music. This makes for a wide spectrum of material, each piece having its unique story from beginning to end.
In saying that, I prefer to work in the mornings with a hot cup of coffee in hand, looking through my window, taking in the picturesque Croatian coastline, which is a muse within itself. I like to think that can be felt and translates into the material I produce.
What are you working on right now?
Currently I am working on some new stuff as well as organising club night events around Croatia. I try to make it my mission to expand the electronic music scene around these parts, because I see that others have a great desire for it also.
What is your gear setup?
I work with Traktor software along with two Allen & Heath midi controllers through which I continually control three tracks at the one time. This process results in my ability to deliver a nice groove and great quality sound. It also allows me to convey an interesting story throughout my set, which is consequently most important to me. With regards to my work in the studio I use PreSonus Studio One software in combination with midi synths.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I feel like contemporary society constantly gets lost in the hustle of everyday life. It seems as though today, life is generally a little chaotic at the best of times. It happens to all of us, including myself, which is why I love to just leave it all behind and head for the hills, literally.
Being surrounded by nature gives me this grounding feeling, gives me new perspective and enables me to regenerate completely, both physically and mentally. Ultimately it affects my music in that it clears my head, but I like to think it reflects in my tracks because it creates a more positive vision of everything.
How would you describe your music genre?
It is so difficult to put a distinct definition on what I create. I feel it’s a fusion of a number of electronic styles, but in my music you can find a wide selection of concepts, from tech-house groove to deep harmonies and synths.
Do you know any music theory?
I haven’t completed any musical schooling. I am self-taught and ultimately I go with my intuition. I feel I do my best work under these circumstances and the sounds I produce heavily depend on my surroundings, vibes and any given moment of inspiration.
What are your plans for the future?
Other than world domination (ha!), I hope to be able to share my work with as many electronic music lovers as possible. In doing so, they too can hopefully enjoy what it is I throw out into the universe. I think the future reflects the present, so currently I am working on numerous collaborations with some big names like the local legend, Petar Dundov, as well as connecting with worldwide agents. Looking at the big picture, I would love to take Europe by storm. That is one of my dreams and would be such a huge achievement for me.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Everything and anything. If it has a nice rhythm, great melody or that special something that draws me in, I am sold. It might sound a bit corny but I love anything that ultimately gives me that natural high that only music has a tendency to create, whether it be electronic, rock or classical music.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
This has to be the worst question ever, because there are so many to choose from, but if I had to choose they would be: Kraftwerk,Depeche mode, Gus Gus,Sven Vath, Aril Brikha.
When are you playing next?
With summer coming up you can find me working the music festivals along the beautiful Croatian coast.
July 8th – Labyrinth Open Festival (Omiš, Croatia)
This is a new Belgian festival established by the infamous Labyrinth production, where I am sharing the stage with artists, or rather legends such as: Alex Nigemann, Fur Coat, Audiofly and Petar Dundov just to name a few.
July 21st – Imperium Festival (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
August 20th-24th – Sonus Festival (Croatia)
This festival has been proclaimed as one of the top 10 electric music festivals in the world, so if you are planning a trip around Europe be sure to drop by, it should be a blast!)
These are a few of my favourite gigs coming up, but I am generally spinning all over the place in Croatia.
Please feel free to include any extra info.
Essentially music is something that brings people together whilst either facing the toughest times or the most blissful periods in our life. I think that the electronic music scene in Croatia is expanding, and this is only the beginning. I hope to add in any way possible to this, and make people feel as good listening to my music as I do when creating it.
Soon I hope to come to Australia, not only to play, but to experience the beauty it has to offer, and possibly try the infamous Aussie meat pie. J
Whether used as a tool to escape from the world, or as a form of connection, music has an ability to reach out like no other. So spread the love, because over all else, only love is infinite and will outlive us all.
