Madelyn Read ‘Roots’ Premiere

by the partae March 31, 2023
written by the partae

Though she may have spent her whole life in the city of Vancouver BC, Madelyn’s heart is in the rural tales of Folk/Americana music. This duality of urban and country is ever present in her music, which really began to flourish when she met Louise Burns (Lillix) in 2019. Together, they co-wrote Madelyn’s first professionally recorded single, “How Easy,” which Louise produced at 604 Studios in Vancouver. Now, she has released the unforgettable “Roots” – a song sure to stay in the mind (and hearts) of listeners.

Her forthcoming debut album, “Concrete Country” , represents a modern Canadiana that asks, “What does it mean to live in a North American city in the 21st century?” Madelyn’s nostalgic and haunting songs feel like a lonesome train ride through the prairies that brings you straight into a bustling downtown core. An ode to home that is full of love and frustration, Concrete Country is a striking, thought-provoking, and heart-warming collection for the urban lover of folk.

Monica Lee ‘Coucou’ Premiere

by the partae March 31, 2023
written by the partae

Meet Monica Lee, an incredible Vancouver-based singer-songwriter who has crafted a remarkable career over the years through her powerful voice, her sense of whimsy, musicality and poetic lyricism. All of those traits (and more) are indisputable on her new (and first) Children’s album – You, Me and The Moon.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Marc Atkinson (at The Barn Studio on Hornby Island, BC) – this new album is a testament to the love that parents have for their kids. The collection of songs showcases a tale of unbreakable connection.  And – accompanied with her live show – Monica dances the audience through playful storytelling, energetic sing-alongs, and soothing balms to end the day. The positive and empowering messages in the music, encouraging children to be kind, curious, and creative – are designed to inspire the little ones to explore the world around them, connect with nature, and embrace their unique qualities.

“This record is all about the deep connection between parents and their children,” says Lee who is (herself) a mother of two. “The album takes us through the motions of life with our little ones, playing outside in the forest listening to the birds, the story of the love of their mother watching them grow, singing about the family pet, magical moments – even humanizing potty training.  Each song can stand alone, but together they feel like a love letter from a parent to their child, inviting, tender and silly. “

A Vancouver multidisciplinary artist for over 20 years, Lee is well known for her powerful songwriting and performing in the Roots, Jazz and Country traditions as well as being a charismatic children’s educator in her popular program, Jump into Music. A chanteuse in both French and English, her voice is flexible and sweet on this new LP – singing her loveable original songs and more familiar timeless classics like “Coucou (Mr Moon)” and the Gershwin jazz standard lullaby, “Summertime.”  “The record touches on several genres – swing, blues, roots, folk and jazz, sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy while keeping the kids bopping along,” she says.

Whether she’s performing at a local venue or in a festival setting, Monica’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious. Her music has become a beloved part of many Vancouver families’ lives, inspiring creativity and building confidence in children as they explore and add their authentic voices to the world.  “In a way all these songs are love songs,” states Lee, “parent to child love where the child is seen for where they are at, their priorities, their world articulated.”

“Supremely loveable tune here and love that vocal. Its making me feel like its summer in this Arctic snap im in. Thanks Cedarsmoke!” 4 / 5 stars
(Gemma Pike, Triple J)

“They’re a band that put storytelling at the forefront”
(theMusic)

“It’s a glorious pastiche of popular culture references.”
(AU Review)

“Brisbane band Cedarsmoke are quickly emerging as forerunners to the next batch of great indie music Australia produces.”
(Scenestr)

“It’s the power to generate such vivid landscapes of longing, loss, frustration and doubt that makes Cedarsmoke one of the most relatable bands going.”
(Hysteria Mag)

In a world that grows increasingly fast-paced and self-absorbed, Cedarsmoke is here with a new track to remind us to ‘Go Easy’ on March 31. The Brisbane-based band is back with new track ‘Go Easy’, an epic folk-rock ballad with a literary twist, showcasing the narrative-driven lyrical style of frontman and singer-songwriter Jon Cloumassis.

In the band’s signature storytelling style, each verse of ‘Go Easy’ explores a single, familiar literary character facing a seemingly impossible challenge. Cloumassis artfully winds their stories together with a common thread, some subtle wit, and just a little humour, which speaks to the dual need for grit and compassion.

Their stories are carried along by folksy acoustic guitar, pedal steel and piano, and Cloumassis is joined between verses by guest vocalists Amber Rose and Cam Smith (who also contributes drums). The resultant singalong chorus adds levity to the introspective track, and encourages the listener to be gentle, both with themselves and others.

Cloumassis’ distinctive vocals and capacity for charming metaphors makes comparisons with crooners Leonard Cohen and Augie March easy to draw. The bittersweet narrative of ‘Go Easy’ leaves listeners with a lingering sense of both sadness and hope, making the track particularly reminiscent of a roots-inspired Nick Cave ballad.

‘Go Easy’ joins an impressive back catalogue of releases, with the band releasing four EPs and one full-length album since 2016. Their 2021 album, ‘Into the Wild World’ was met with wide-spread praise and the band has seen ongoing support from theMusic, AU Review, AAA Backstage, Hysteria Mag, Scenestr, Music Is My Muse, Local Band Smokeout, Triple J Unearthed and more.

Take some time and pressure out of your day to ‘Go Easy’ with Cedarsmoke, released March 31 on all major streaming platforms.

Stream ‘When You Find The Time’

Singer, songwriter and producer extraordinaire Mirror Mirror is bringing the funk with new track ‘When You Find the Time’, out March 31.

After extensive touring as a member of local bands, Mirror Mirror sees Ondre Davis working solo, writing, producing and recording his own music out of his studio on the Gold Coast.

The spacey opening notes and funky baseline of ‘When You Find the Time’ instantly transports the listener to an era of glamour, when electric piano, reverb and disco balls reigned supreme. Davis draws inspiration from artist such as Bobby Caldwell and Ned Doheny, and the heavy late-70s influence is evident upon first listen of this sparkling track.

After years of gigging with local acts, Davis is taking the time out to write, record and mix by himself in his studio. His smooth and confident vocals perfectly compliment the groovy soundscape that builds throughout this track.

Lyrically, ‘When You Find The Time’ explores a classic scenario; waiting on someone to tell you something you already know. Ironically given the theme, Davis notes the demo for this track came out in less than an hour, with 80% of the instrumentation and lyrics complete.

Elaborating on the meaning behind the lyrics, Davis states:

“It’s written from the perspective of the person that ultimately ends up waiting around for this day, knowing full and well what is happening but putting it on the other person to say it first.”

Mirror Mirror has received significant media support since debuting, being featured on the likes of Life Without Andy, Trouble Juice, MTV Upload, Triple J Unearthed, Pilerats, and many more. These platforms have praised Mirror Mirror for their unique sound, being described as both catchy and introspective, showcasing Davis’ ability to write emotionally resonant lyrics.

‘When You Find The Time’ is out everywhere March 31, and Mirror Mirror will be taking the tune on the road very soon – watch this space.

ASH OLSEN

by the partae March 30, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
I’m in my hometown Fredrikstad, Norway rn.

How did you first start playing music?
One listen to Tupac’s ‘Only God Can Judge Me’ changed my life; I went home, rapped along to it on YouTube, and was instantly hooked. I haven´t stopped rhyming since.

What’s been happening recently?
I’ve just been working a lot in the studio, finishing up everything for the upcoming releases. Also been booked to some dope gigs nationally and in Europe like The Great Escape and Roskilde so looking forward to playing those shows!

You’ve just released your re-imagined version of your single “Low”, please tell us how this came about and what it means to you:
That was just me and my producer wanting to switch it up a little just for fun, we thought it would be cool to do an even more slowed down version of the song, and when we walked up the hills in la we found the perfect spot to film it. So everything just fell into place and it felt good.

How was it being in and recording in LA?
La is always nice, it’s very different then where I’m from so the inspiration was fresh and different.

Please tell us about your interest in fashion:
I love fashion, since I was a kid I was always experimenting a lot with different types of clothes and styles. It’s a great way to express yourself. I always dress how I feel.

You’ve been nominated for a Norwegian Grammy (best newcomer) what does this nomination mean to you?
Yea that was dope, it came pretty fast after I had started releasing music so it was pretty scary to me tbh haha. But also a great confirmation that I’m doing something right, so that felt good as hell, I’m extremely grateful for that experience!

Please tell us about the inspiration behind your live performances:
I just want my shows to be intimate and special every time, and connect with everyone who shows up! I’m definitely still getting comfortable with it, so inspo wise I’m taking in everything I see and every experience I get still to really feel great about it.

What can we expect for your two performances at this years The Great Escape?
I’m definitely planning on going all out! I’m excited af.

What’s planned for 2023?
Playing shows, making music & releasing music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Nothing can beat a good Italian pizza to me, favorite place to hangout is definitely my room.

The Man Himself

by the partae March 29, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
I’m currently in Adelaide, South Australia. And right this second, I’m in the spare room of my house looking out over my neighbour’s courtyard while he hangs his washing out. I don’t know why, it looks like rain.

How did you first start playing music?
There were always instruments around the house growing up. Some were already full sized, of course. I just made things up on whatever made noise until they started to sound like songs. Lessons didn’t really suit me, and I still can’t read music, so I just learned to play by ear. And with fingers, too.

What’s been happening recently?
Well, there’s a rental crisis… Oh, you mean with me? A little songwriting, but mostly I’ve been preparing to unleash my latest single on the world, which means sending loads of emails. I’m basically hoping to trick someone into plugging the release date and asking me what influenced the sound and songwriting…

Your latest single ‘Illiterati’ is out on March 31, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Oh, it is and I’m glad you asked! I was aiming to keep this track pretty low fi and DIY, and other abbreviations, mainly because I was listening to Milano by Daniele Luppi and Parquet Courts at the time. That album is really neither of those things, but I figured my version of it would need to be. And I wrote it about people who always claim to know something about everything. I presume everyone has met these people, or maybe I just attract them with my antisocial demeanor and limited patience.

How did you go about writing Illiterati?
Writing it was pretty fast, because I wanted it to have a trashy vibe. I also tried to keep the song really simple, because I knew I was going to have to track everything myself. I then went to a practice room for a few weeks to rehearse all the parts. That also meant learning how to play drums, which I’d never done before. But you can’t tell, unless you’re a drummer or have ever heard drumming.

Where and when did you record/produce/master who did you work with?
The track was recorded at Deep Dive, which is a little studio run by Mitch Rackin out of his basement in Brooklyn, New York. Not Brooklyn, New Zealand. That’s a totally different place. It was just the two of us over a one-day session in September last year. I played everything and Mitch made it sound good. We got two completed tracks done in about 10 hours, which isn’t bad really. Then it was mastered by King Willy in Launceston, so this track is better travelled than me.

The mix was done by Magoo (Regurgitator, Custard, Powderfinger, Spiderbait etc, etc) Please tell us about this experience:
It was great to get Magoo to mix since he did so much music I grew up on. He’s pretty intuitive to the qualities of a song, and we agreed we needed to embrace the limitations of the track and bring out the trashy element. Of course, he’s working out of Brisbane, so the experience was really just a series of emails. But he always responded promptly, which is better than you get from most local bands.

Please tell us about the animated music video:
The video was made by visual artist Grant Parke, who also took the photo I’m using for the single cover. He had free reign with it, which is just as well, because I’d never have thought of what he did. He came up with some pretty surreal things. In some ways the video is a lot like Grant himself. It’s edgy, angular, cool… black and white… two dimensional…  Actually, it’s not an awful lot like Grant.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Right now I’m listening to my neighbour sing along to ‘Call Me’ by Blondie. He’s rubbish.

What do you like to do away from music?
I like to have conversations with my friends away from music. It’s very difficult to communicate in a loud environment.

What’s planned for 2023?
The main thing will be finishing and releasing my debut album, which includes the two New York tracks, and a bunch of others recorded with a band. Then making some videos and playing a few shows. I’ve also got some washing I need to hang out, but it will mostly be music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I do like a good steak, and they do one with a pint of Guinness at the Royal Oak around the corner from my place. Anywhere cosy and convenient suits me. I love cosy places, like record stores and bookshops. But they do tend to frown on you eating steak there.

PIERCE BROTHERS ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE ‘IN THE WATER’ + EAST COAST TOUR

by the partae March 29, 2023
written by the partae

Indie-folk duo Pierce Brothers today unveil their latest single and video, In The Water, a soulful and uplifting track that highlights the band’s unique sound and musical style. This new release serves as a follow-up to their highly successful High & Unsteady single, co-written and produced by Tash Sultana.

In The Water is one of several tracks that Pierce Brothers recorded in collaboration with several talented Australian artists, including Garrett Kato, Tash Sultana, and Steph Strings. The track was recorded at Red Moon Studio’s in Melbourne with long-time collaborator Jan Skubiszewski, and features the duo’s signature blend of acoustic guitar, percussion, and soaring harmonies.

The song writing process for In The Water was an exciting and collaborative effort, with friend and keys player Dara Munnis adding his unique perspective to the mix. “As a major third wheel in the twin brother dynamic, we found pretty quickly that my main role was actually that of a casting vote between Pat and Jack,” said Dara. “Whenever there were different options on the table for the direction the song was taken, I have 100% let this newfound power go to my head.“

The result is an emotionally resonant song that blends beautiful melodies with relatable lyrics, depicting the challenge of acknowledging and overcoming difficult emotion, the great search we all have for finding peace. The resounding theme of freedom is repeated throughout the song, inspiring hope and leaving us feeling like a better life is just around the corner. “We’ve had the idea knocking about for a couple of years, not knowing what to do with it,” said Pat. “We all got together in Jack’s studio, and we began feeling it out again and adding little layers of rhythm and ideas here and there. From there, it just began to build up.”

The touching accompanying music video was once again directed in-house, with one of the brothers Patrick Pierce directing alongside co-writer of the track Dara Munnis. “I have wanted to shoot at these locations for a while, and I saw the work of Alicia Brown which got me thinking about using those designs and ideas in a music video about a child’s imaginary friend. Once that was in my head, I just began thinking of all the beautiful locations in Victoria and just wanted to get on the road to start filming them.  I reached out to Maryanne Lea to help with the costuming and she took the idea and really ran with it!” Says Pat. Unfortunately, due to lockdowns in 2020, the filming of the performance aspect of the clip became impossible. “ We had to shelve the project until a new project that fit the song came along. Since then Dara has become a keys player in the band and this was our first song we wrote together. It just made sense that we release this music video we’d worked on for so long together”

To celebrate their new single, Pierce Brothers will be going on tour with a bunch of headline shows across Australia.  Jack Pierce explains, ‘It’s been such a long time since we’ve played headline metro shows, so I’m just really excited to get back out there and play to some of our most excellent hometown fans. Melbourne is where we honed our craft and where our oldest fans are from, so we’re just really excited to see them all again’.

Pierce Brothers are known for their high energy live performance and their ability to create authentic, heartfelt music that speaks to the soul. In The Water is a testament to their musical prowess and their dedication to their craft. With their toes firmly in the sand, writing and recording music and touring Australia relentlessly, Pierce Brothers are poised to take the indie-folk world by storm.

“A classic post-punk quality to it, especially on the vocals and the rhythm section. The layers and the guitars, the tones and the harmonies that hit at various points of the track are super heavy. Refreshing in terms of how lush and smothering they all sound.”
Anthony Fantano (theneedledrop, Ward 52)

“Not only bound to dominate the world of rock music, but look set to do it on their own terms”
Tone Deaf

“A band who have been gaining local momentum with sell-out powerful live shows”
Pilerats

“A [BIGSOUND] set of blunt force post-punk with acidic sax and guttural deadpan delivery”
Music Feeds

Alt-punk outfit dust skyrocket today with the release of their debut EP, et cetera, etc out now via Kanine Records. LISTEN HERE.

Produced alongside Wade Keighran (Polish Club, Hockey Dad, Sarah Blasko), et cetera, etc is a transportative listen, filtered through stumbled-upon voicemail message interludes, warbling saxophone solos and electronic ambience dispersed through driving punk rock in all its forms. et cetera, etc is a window to dust’s genesis in real time – friends jamming to their idols and experimenting for the first time, unknowingly piecing together a debut project – consciously guided by each other. dust‘s debut EP is in that way, a one-of-a-kind time capsule of the perfect storm.

Of the release the group share, “Edwardsville offered a place of solitude in nature, of bringing people together. et cetera, etc as a title is to show all the different angles and styles we take on writing music while still sounding like us. To introduce ourselves as a band and our sound. Recording and living in the farmhouse all together made us comfortable and uninterrupted. We had no time restrictions and often were recording and revising late into the night. We’d play Twin Peaks cuts and Blade Runner scenes projected on the walls, contributing to the mood in the overall recording. We want our music to make people excited and provoke thought and introspection. Listen and find out.”

Recorded in its entirety on guitarist-saxophonist Adam Ridgway’s family farm property in Edwardsville, together with guitarist-vocalists Gabriel Stove and Justin Teale, bassist Liam Smith and drummer Kye Cherry, dust bear fruit to an impressive listen that distils their influences into a novel, playful sound of their own with an innovative vision that ensures their promise. “It’s cemented our friendship and given us the foundation to build upon our relationships with each other,” they continue. “et cetera, etc is a step in the direction of the sound we’d like to carve out in the future.”

While their recent releases ‘Joy ( Guilt )‘, ‘Ward 52’ and ‘The Gutter’ illustrate et cetera, etc’s collage-like nature from a glance, including Justin and Gabe’s trade of vocals. Tethering these singles are improvised, gentle synth swells and arpeggiations of ambient interludes, all before the door kicks in. ‘Alternator’s wailing saxophone gives an eerie and unexpected edge to the release, tension breaking, frustration easing, growing and firing back up again in time with the story of a broken down car, waiting for roadside assist ten hours from home. ‘False Narrative’ comparatively pulses in dust’s warmest melody yet, as a whole transposing the familiar yet introspective energy of King Krule, Aphex Twin, and more, dust’s debut EP conjures the group’s unique proposition in the alternative space locally.

Already praised across triple j Unearthed, NME, RAGE, Music Feeds, FBi Radio, 2SER, PBS and more. Embraced across triple j including praise from Richard Kingsmill on 2023 (“Their latest single ‘Joy ( Guilt )’ is fantastic”), Ash McGregor on Home & Hosed (“These guys are making some really powerful music with a lot of drive and energy to it”) and Josh Redbeard on short.fast.loud (“another song added to the list with saxophones that make me feel joy”), while lauded on triple j Unearthed as “cool to hear this style of post-punk spun through an Australian lens.” Featured in NME’s anticipated releases of March, dubbed a “wildly promising” and “thrilling first release,” needless to say dust’s sights are firm on delivering a release that considers their position in the local scene as vital as it is exciting.

Just as artistically motivated by the fragmented, free-genre steps of Yung Lean and Burial, merging experimental jazz and electronica into a sound as immediate as Inhaler and Violent Soho, this idiosyncratic joining of the fringes comes together much like their roots in the steel city, Newcastle, and the band’s careful balance of in-betweens. Born in the middle of periods of normalcy and uncertainty; not quite close enough to the major city scenes nor far enough isolated away; equally inspired by the groups making waves on both sides of the Pacific, dust take these keen observations to offer an invigorating new take on Australian post-punk: progressive, catchy, and irresistible. In time, no doubt a contemporary answer to their hometown’s historic origins.

ASH OLSEN RELEASES ACOUSTIC VISUALISER FOR SINGLE ‘LOW’

by the partae March 29, 2023
written by the partae

“Tipped as
Norway’s biggest breaking talent” – NOTION

“Ash Olsen is already making waves with her boundary-breaking rap” – TMRW “Ash Olsen has been dominating the scene with her skillful wordplay and raring  bars” – WONDERLAND

Taking no time to slow down, Ash Olsen delivers her spine-tingling, re-imagined  version of single “LOW”. Arriving as a mesmerising 2 and a half minute visual  offering, Olsen transports us from our monotonous routines, into Ashy’s world and  her time in the hills of Los Angeles. The video lands straight off the back of her  recent announcement of being selected to play not one, but two stages at The Great  Escape Festival later this year.

The original version, listen here, kickstarted the month and resonated immediately with the press, from Wonderland Magazine, New Wave Magazine, Fizzy Magazine,  Noctis, Raydar Magazine and Oculate, all certifying Olsen as a firm one to watch this  year.

In her own words Ash Olsen tells us about the track;

““Low” is about being in a relationship where things are just not going the right way.  You both know it’s not working out and all the emotions are being taken out on each  other. In the track, it’s me being the one that tries to get her out of the negative, dark  and lost space she was in, which was an extremely difficult position to be in. And end

note is that she had me low because she was very low.”

Previous release “CRAZY BITCH!” was quickly picked up by UK press Notion and  Wonderland who continue to vouch for Ash Olsen as an international talent to  keep a firm eye on. The track was sweeped up across DSP’s, Ash was the cover of  Spotify’s Flammer Playlist (50,000 listeners), featured in NMF Norway, Apple  Music’s New Music Daily Norway, New Music Daily Finland, New Norwegian  Rap, and Amazon Music’s ‘Breakthrough Hip-Hop’.

Within her home Territory of Norway, Ash has already secured this status having  already climbed to the top of the local ranks and is considered as ‘the next big  thing’ to take to international waters. Domestic successes include a plethora of  nominations at the Norwegian Grammys last year, being nominated as  ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at another highly influential Norwegian awards, P3

Gull, and receiving ardent support from one of Norway’s biggest radio stations  NRK P3, with ‘Ash Olsen’ being a name heard across national airwaves.

Live music accessibility advocates, Tibi Access are back with Groove Tunes 2023 – an all-accessible event featuring KYE, Cool Out Sun, Voli K, plus more to be announced!

by the partae March 28, 2023
written by the partae
“Our first instalment of Groove Tunes was a wonderful success, we’re so excited to do it all again. Last year’s event was everything and more than I expected. We had such a diverse audience, everyone was on the dancefloor, enjoying live and inclusive music. “ – Dina Bassile, Tibi Access and Groove Tunes Founder

Independent accessibility consultancy Tibi Access returns to host its annual event ‘Groove Tunes’ on Saturday 3 June 2023 at The Corner Hotel in Richmond.  The second instalment will demonstrate what an accessible live music event looks like from programming to marketing, to delivery, plus creating an opportunity for people with disabilities to attend a live music event, but also encourages the broader music industry to make live music more inclusive.

Hosted at Melbourne’s premier music venue the Corner Hotel, Groove Tunes not only supports the disability community but educates the creative industries about what accessibility can look like within any space or venue. Together headline artists KYE and Cool Out Sun, alongside artist Voli K who is living with a disability plus two more artists to be announced, will contribute to helping improve the recognition and removal of barriers faced by people with disabilities, with what promises to be one big celebration of music, dancing, inclusivity and diversity.

Tibi Access was created to change the landscape of live music, events and venues, by founder and Groove Tunes founder Dina Bassile, a person who uses a wheelchair and has lived experience of the Australian music industry’s gaps. At the core of Tibi is a spirit of inclusivity and a will to open up gigs and events of all sizes to everyone and for this year’s event. Groove Tunes will be bringing back Pay It Forward allowing members of the public to purchase a ticket for someone in the disability community, Companion Tickets, accessible signage, Auslan interpreters, an accessible website, an accessible entrance and lift, accessible + gender-neutral toilets, lowered bar, lyric videos, SUBPAC tactile vests, braille tickets (on request) and sensory zone.

Plus this year, Groove Tunes is super excited to have two SUBPAC tactile vests available at the event. SUBPAC is a tactile audio system that consists of a combination of tactile transducers, vibro-tactile membranes, electronics and textiles, designed to deliver a physical dimension of sound. SUBPAC will be available in a wearable format and delivers a complex and nuanced experience to create an accurate tactile representation of our audio input being used across the site. The SUBPAC vests have been described as being equivalent to a headphone for the D/deaf and hard of hearing community. Groove Tunes are proud to bring this technology to our event in partnership with the NSW government.

This year’s headline artist KYE formally introduced herself to the world a little over 12 months ago but has already won over audiences with her celebratory, sun-soaked sound that effortlessly bridges pop and R&B. KYE has amassed over 1 million Spotify streams and garnered playlist support from triple j, FBi Radio, and MTV. KYE’s relationship with music blossomed as a young child growing up in the UK. In between vivid memories spent singing through sickness and in health, gospel songs, talent shows, girl bands and more, her voice flourished with each deep embrace of her identity leading to her mantra of embracing openness and finding joy in it, with the world.

Bringing the party to Groove Tunes is the Naarm collective that needs no introduction, Cool Out Sun, the creative project composed of the superpowers that are N’fa Jones, Sensible J, and Nui Moon. The beats are provocative, the lyrics powerfully imaginative; a live act that is bound to have you dancing from the start through to the end of their set.

Warming up the stage ahead of Cool Out Sun is First Nations artist originating from Fiji, VOLI K with his soul-infused songs, which have been deeply influenced by his early exposure to soul and gospel influences as a drummer connecting within his community church. With lyrics inspired by love & hope, his dynamic live performances helped him land on tour with Tones & I. Hand-picked by Tone’s VOLI was selected to open up her inaugural “Music In The Park” Festival on the Mornington Peninsula, plus a performance as part of her ensemble at the “Tecate Emblema Festival” in Mexico City.

It wouldn’t be a Groove Tunes without supporting up-and-comers, so stay tuned as there are two more artists still to be announced.

Showcasing some of Melbourne’s best artists, Groove Tunes will provide access to musicians who live with disability to showcase their work, as well as give punters with disability and their friends and family the opportunity to experience an inclusive, anxiety-free night out.

ICONIC MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHER, SCARLET PAGE, UNVEILS NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN IMAGES IN HER AUSTRALIAN DEBUT EXHIBITION ‘CAPTURES’

by the partae March 28, 2023
written by the partae

Behind The Gallery is proud to present internationally acclaimed photographer Scarlet Page and her debut photography exhibition ‘Captures‘ from Wednesday, 3 May 2023 at 205 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, NSW.

The exhibition will showcase Scarlet’s iconic collection of live, behind-the-scenes, album and portrait shots from her three-decade career, including never before seen photographs, as well as her talent and passion for capturing the raw essence of music legends having grown up in the industry alongside her father, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

“While curating ‘Captures,’ I sifted through my archives and discovered some previously unseen photographs and hidden gems with an Australian focus. I pride myself on going a little bit deeper behind the mask and capturing the essence of my subjects,” Scarlet notes. “Reflecting back on my career to date, I can see that thread continuing all the way through.“

Scarlet’s work has been commissioned by all the major record labels to shoot artwork, press, and marketing campaigns for international bands and her career highlights include working for prestigious music publications in the UK, including MOJO, Q, Uncut, Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, and Kerrang!, as well as travelling around America with the 1994 Lollapolooza tour and touring the globe with legendary acts such as The Darkness, Placebo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, and Stereophonics.

Scarlet’s ‘Captures’ exhibition will have an Australian focus and feature her distinctive documentary style of reportage, which includes unseen hidden gems from some of her subjects over the years – including The Vines, Nick Cave and some recently unearthed images captured at very early Silverchair gigs in “scuzzy little venues” all over England.

“Especially as time passes, the photos become more nostalgic and more precious somehow,” she observes, “and they evoke such great memories.”

‘Captures’ will also feature Scarlet’s entire ‘Resonators’ collection, where she travelled all around the world taking portraits of this generation’s game-changing guitarists along with other highlights including evocative photographs of Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Oasis, Courtney Love, Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, The Verve and The Prodigy plus more.

The exhibition is an opportunity not to be missed, offering Australians the chance to see a collection of works by one of our generation’s finest music photographers, who over the past 30 years has developed a cult following of fans.

An exclusive photography competition will also be taking place for young, emerging photographers in Australia, more details to be announced soon.

VIP Opening: Wednesday 3rd May, 6 – 8pm

Public Opening: Thursday 5th May, 5 – 8pm

Venue: Behind The Gallery

Address:  205 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, 2010

Q&A: Saturday 6th May, 10am – 12pm. Scarlet Page discusses her photography career and the images in her ‘Captures’ exhibition followed by a Q&A session.

About King Stingray:

King Stingray was formed by lifelong friends Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) in 2019, by recruiting mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and yidaki), Yimila Gurruwiwi (Yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). They started to blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create their unique “Yolŋu surf-rock” sound which has captivated the nation.

Propelled by the instant success of their debut track “Hey Wanhaka” in 2020, and subsequent singles “Get Me Out”, “Milkumana”, “Camp Dog” and “Let’s Go”, the band soared to unexpected heights in record time. Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), King Stingray took out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year’ J Award for 2021, NME Australia’s ‘Best New Act From Australia’ and Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Artist’ award all before an album was released.

Their much-anticipated debut LP ‘King Stingray’ dropped in August 2022, and has seen the band clock up a string of staggering accolades including a whopping five ARIA Award nominations, a win for the ‘Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist’ ARIA, the top spot in double j’s 50 best albums of 2022 list, and even a nod from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who chose ‘Get Me Out’ as his favourite song of the year! The album was also awarded the prestigious 2022 Australian Music Prize.

With friendship, family, connection to country and culture resonating through everything they do, King Stingray are on track to forge a lasting legacy in the Australian music landscape.
