TIBASKO ‘Still Rushing’ remixed by newly emerged, already acclaimed Azzecca

by the partae February 28, 2023
written by the partae

As a fresh talent already racking up the big-name supporters (inc. Danny Howard, Sarah Story, Michael Bibi) and impressive streaming stats, Chicago’s Azzecca remixes ‘Hawt’ duo TIBASKO’s euphoric, jungle/D&B infused anthem ‘Still Rushing’, out on Another Rhythm on February 24th.

This follows hard upon the success of her ‘Other Side’ EP (Higher Ground) which was still at #15 in Beatport’s Melodic House & Techno chart 6 weeks post release, and Ida Enberg’s remix of her ‘I’ve Been Waiting’, plus ecstatically received debuts at fabric, Printworks, ARC Festival Chicago for her signature house, techno, darker disco and dance melange. And she’s just getting started, from her native Chicago launch pad aka her infamous but female-friendly ‘Dirty Disco’ party nights.

‘Still Rushing’ (Azzecca remix) turns up the sustained speed and the house kicks and hi-hats as opposed to the firestarting drums of the original, adding powerful bass riff arps turning sharp and fizzy, and a full-on charge to the end.

‘I knew I wanted to make something big and slamming that I could play in my own sets, so went down more of a straight techno route than my latest releases’ Azzecca says. ‘I started by pitching the vocal down a bit to match the original vocals from Julia Church. The acid line was made on the Novation Summit (with a lot of distortion!) I love using hardware synths, tweaking the filters etc live feels much more involved and hands on for me.’

The original cut dropped in July 2022 on the British-electronic duo’s eponymous, self-titled debut EP, showcasing TIBASKO’s musical progression and evolution that is thrilling in a way few of their peers can match. Branded one of Mixmag’s best albums and EPs of the year 2022.

From the acclamation of Pete Tong’s Future Stars and Billboard Dance’s Emerging Artists, to Danny Howard’s Hottest Record with their latest cut ‘Hawt’ and a nomination for BBC Introducing Dance Artist of the Year, their scorching blend of electronica, breaks, house, bass and techno recently ignited Warehouse Project, Snowbombing, Hideout Festival and Parklife, and also took them onto Azzecca’s turf with their debut tour, shelling it at CRSSD Festival and Life Is Beautiful.”
It’s going to be a hot winter.

‘Still Rushing’ (Azzecca Remix) is out now on Another Rhythm. Get it here: https://found.ee/TIBASKO-Still-Rushing-Azzecca-Remix

Henry Rollins x The Partae – Interviewed by Tom Valcanis

by the partae February 27, 2023
written by the partae
  1. What does authenticity mean to you in 2023?

======= I think if you have to think about it, you’re not it. It’s like asking what’s masculinity in 2023 or at any time. I reckon if you’re doing what you’re doing with commitment, you’re authentic but at the same time, are too busy to answer and perhaps that’s what makes you authentic. It’s never a question I ask myself or wonder about anyone else.

  1. You once said that you only sell out if you sell out your values (Ramones on a car ad…pay them double, pay them now!) As people change, values change – is that just an inescapable part of being human or is that indeed, “selling out?”

============== I’m not sure what you’re asking but I’ll try to answer. I think it’s possible when you’re at a certain age, your value set can be informed by what you know but also by what you don’t. When I was young, all police were the enemy. The ones I dealt with were less than fair to me. I’m not dealing drugs or breaking into houses but nonetheless, I’m getting hassled, threatened. I thought they all should be torched. As an older person, I see law enforcement differently. It looks like a very nuanced and difficult job where someone is tasked with bringing simple tools to an often very complex situation. I wouldn’t wish that job on anyone. Could it be that at least in the USA, it’s a flawed system and cops are in many ways doing the best they can with an increasingly bad mechanism putting out bad results and in some ways they’re screwed no matter what? Are there bad cops? Absolutely. You want less bad cops? I do. Do I want less crime? Sure. How do we get there? The younger me would have said to wipe out all cops and you’d have less crime. The older me says it’s a problem as big as the country itself and has been a work in progress for at least a couple of centuries. So, have I sold out my values with how I think about this particular topic now, or am I seeing more than just the part of the iceberg that’s partially submerged? I don’t think a band getting its music on an ad is selling out, I think it’s a subversive victory. The song didn’t change, the mainstream is being bent to the band’s will. Selling out is appealing to white supremacists because you even though you don’t like what they say, you still want their votes and you’re willing to overlook certain things.

  1. If you’re trying to make a living from your art, is the art of the sale necessarily a bad thing?

========== No. Hopefully an artist knows their worth. I’ve bought a lot of art from artists. I never haggle with the price. I respect it.

  1. Is art still the pursuit of perfection or has most of it just become a vehicle for self-enhancement?

=========== You might get a better answer from an artist. I’m not one. I do what I do and say what I say. There’s not one thing artistic about anything I do. The artists I’ve been around, I don’t know if perfection was ever part of their equation. I think for a large part, it was about expression. They see and feel things in their way and render the information artistically. Francis Bacon, the great painter, how he saw people is why he painted them as he did. I think for some artists, their work is a processing of life and expressing that. Perhaps some artists “put it on” a bit for the purposes of selling something, or getting acclaim, fame, money. I think it’s perhaps missing the point to generalize about these things. I think you have to go case by case. Was art ever the pursuit of perfection? Perhaps for some artists. I guess you’d have to ask them.

  1. Is the state of culture today something that you find completely foreign, or something that you’re comfortable in?

========== I’ve always found it for the most part, foreign to me. Seeing what so many people like doing, I’m glad they have it. I’m grateful for stadiums to hold them all so they can see a “big game” and when they’re there, the streets are a little more empty. I like holidays too. I don’t take them but the normals love this kind of thing and they all pack themselves away in houses with their relatives who they often hate and leave the streets empty. There’s social media. Isn’t it great? People can take photos of their meals at restaurants and send them to their friends and when they’re doing that, they’re leaving me alone. Imagine if all these people were turned on to better stuff? Ugh. Long lines at museums and galleries, etc. How about this; I find myself completely comfortable to be foreign in today’s state of culture. My interests and mainstream interests are mutually exclusive and I couldn’t be happier about it. The normals have left all the best stuff for me. I can’t thank them enough.

  1. Is the podcast a continuation of the oral storytelling tradition? What’s your view on them?

============= I think people do podcasts for all kinds of reasons. I don’t like doing them because to me, it’s time I won’t get back, someone who’s not me has my voice, ideas and opinions forever and can do pretty much what they’d like with them. I’ve done interviews where a year later, the interviewer has told me they’re now going to make a podcast out of the interview, or they want to use the interview for a book they’ve suddenly decided they’re going to “write” and I have unwittingly become a “content provider.” I think it is a one-way exchange. I’ve been told it will be “great promotion” but I know that’s simply not the case. I did a podcast earlier this year as a favor for someone. The best part of it was it was brief. Content wise, it was a complete waste of time. I’ve listened to at least three of them in my life. I dated a woman once, she’s a doctor. She listens to podcasts done by doctors about research and I heard a little bit of that and they were interesting but intellectually over my pay grade.

  1. Does DIY/Punk/Bohemianism still exist? Or has it been co-opted or twisted into something else? Or is “punk rock tradition” a contradiction in terms?

========== I don’t think they all have to be joined together so if you take one, you have to include the others. I’m a billboard for the DIY ethos and at this point, it’s pretty much the only way I can operate without losing my temper or risk selling out. When you take other people’s money, you also have to take their opinions. That’s a deal breaker. There’s a project I’m working on now and I’ve had an investor ask to be involved. The money would rocket the thing forward but then I’d have to put his ideas into mine. Not going to happen. No compromise. If I don’t get it done, I’ll die trying, which is fine. So, DIY still exists. Does Punk exist? Of course it does. There’s great Punk bands all over the world. Check out Upchuck from Atlanta Georgia or Generacion Suicida from Los Angeles. Great Punk bands are all over the world. Are Bohemians the ones who think Jack Kerouac was a good writer? I’m not sure what Bohemians get up to and I don’t care. I’d rather Punk bands not think they have to do certain things to be “Punk” and just express themselves. I think when you start flexing the ideas of “tradition” then suddenly there’s rules. No long hair, no this, no that. This happened a lot in the 1980s and Punk Rock lost me. I got told to cut my hair in 1982 and didn’t cut it again until 1986. I think some of the rules and regulations if you will, came with young people truly trying to differentiate themselves from that which came before. They’re drawing lines in the sand and I get it but when you’re basically setting up an alternate society, you see how quickly things become complicated. No long hair, okay but what about gay? Gay okay but with only with short hair? What about the short hair guy who likes Trump? Can he come into the tent? I think this kind of thing is what damages culture. It’s why I don’t want to be part of any club, gang, group. I’m on the board of a few charities but that’s about it. I live alone, work alone and have very little interest in hanging out with groups.

  1. An event can occur and two, three, etc. sides can see two, three, many different things. When truth becomes a political tribal consensus reality, where does truth stand?

=========== The truth becomes a thing to bend and shape to fit a narrative. Even if the truth loses its inherent truthfulness that doesn’t matter to those who are after something. LGBTQ people are proof there are LGBTQ people. Some might say LGBTQ people are proof there’s not enough god being taught in schools and proof the liberal/communist (see what I did there putting them together?) agenda is destroying good Christian countries all over the Western World. I think the truth stands high on the endangered species list.

  1. Are we living in “passionless” times?

============= I don’t do “we” but I’ll try to answer. My micro universe is passion driven. I think if you all were living in passionless times, you wouldn’t have hit the streets in such large numbers when a black man was choked to death by cops in broad daylight or when the Supreme Court of the United States wiped out a woman’s right to control her body’s functions. Passion (along with misinformation, manipulation, ignorance, stupidity, bigotry, victimhood and infantilization) is what drove thousands of men to run into the Capitol building in Washington, DC to try to overturn an election when their moron candidate got bounced out of office. I think passion (along with misinformation, manipulation, ignorance, stupidity, bigotry, victimhood and infantilization) is at an all time high amongst the ranks of the consumerati.

Grace Woodroofe

Where are you currently based?
Melbourne, Australia

How did you first start playing music?
My Dad plays guitar and it used to annoy my brother and I so much when we were little kids. Eventually I grew interested in picking it up and as my love of music grew, I started to write songs.

What’s been happening recently?
I’ve been working on my album for a while and just released my first new single in 7 years, which was a daunting but liberating experience. The same week of release I went on tour with Ben Harper around the east coast of Australia. Now I’m securing some headline shows and focusing on completing the album.

Your latest single ‘Beginning’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
With this new album, I wanted the story I’m telling to be the absolute focus and allow my voice to fully take over and be the main instrument.  A simple, full piano sound is so classic and emotive to me, so when we started writing the chords, the melody and words flowed out with ease.

How did you go about writing Beginning?
Beginning is a love song about the difficulty of letting go when a relationship ends. The album follows a narrative of the beginning, middle and end of this relationship and although the song is titled “Beginning” it essentially marks the beginning of the end. There was a phase in my relationship where I struggled with bargaining to keep him. I was in denial about his treatment of me and allowed my standards and self worth to be compromised. This song is written in that headspace.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
I wrote and recorded Beginning with my incredible producer and friend Xavier Dunn in Sydney many years ago. It was the first song we made together and it was a turning point for me in terms of collaborating with artists again after writing on my own for a few years.

You’ve just come off a tour with Ben Harper, how was this experience?
Playing shows with Ben is the most fun, thrilling and nerve wrecking experience. I’ve been on several tours with him and they remain some of, if not the absolute highlights of my life. With this East Coast run, the audience was so incredibly welcoming and receptive. Playing those large theatres is an artist’s dream. The sound, the decor, the history… I never wanted it to end.

How does it feel to return to touring?
Touring and playing live is the absolute pinnacle of joy in what I do as a musician. I thrive on stage and allow the music to completely take over. When I get off stage, I love the feeling that I gave it my all and completely emptied the tank. I want to play as much as possible now I am ready and have a tonne of new songs to showcase.

Please tell us about about your upcoming album:
The album conveys the story that took me off the road, out of the studio and into the dark for many years. It’s the story of an emotionally abusive relationship I was in and is the most raw and deliberate collection of stories I’ve ever told. The album will follow this story played out chronologically and ultimately end with my reclamation of self.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
I love to make myself playlists depending on mood or what I’m working on. My current favorites feature Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee and Donny Hathaway. I am also devouring Nina Simone’s To Love Somebody album.
What’s planned for 2023?
I’m going to keep putting songs out for a while, get my name out there again as I continue to finalize the album. When I’m not recording, I will be playing a number of headline shows around Australia. In the later half of the year I have plans to tour internationally supporting another wonderful artist, as well as releasing the new album!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
My morning (and afternoon) routine is an hour at the dog park with my boy Marble. This is the daily hotspot for me. All the owners know each other’s (and their dog’s) names. When I play shows they ask me how they went and follow me on socials, it’s the best little community. Being outside and watching the dogs play and run is so pure and joyous.

BEGINNING is out now.

Sting ‘My Songs’ Tour – Rod Laver Arena, 23 February, Melbourne, 2023

by the partae February 27, 2023
written by the partae

Photogrpahy: Darren Chan – Words: Chris Brooks

Support act ‘Joe Sumner’ treated the packed Rod Laver crowd to a solo performance with just his acoustic guitar and his beautiful, soulfull voice. Melbourne’s super star ‘Paul Dempsey’ of ‘Something for Kate’ joined Joe on stage to accompany one of Joe’s latest singles ‘Hope’.

71 year old living legend and Police frontman Sting hit the Rod Laver Arena stage with more energy, charisma and youth than most men half his age. This tour aptly called ‘My Songs’ was exactly that, the night opened with crowd favourites ‘Message in a Bottle’, ‘Englishman in New York’ and a very danceable version of ‘Every Little Things She Does is Magic’.  Sting paid homage to Michael Gudinski, mentioning the the multi decade friendship between the two men.

Sting’s voice is still very much powerful and full of emotion, sounding as good as any studio quality version that you may have heard. After opening with Police hits, the show took on a slower pace with the introduction of new material ‘The Bridge’, ‘So Lonely’ and a lovely cover of Bob Marley’s  ‘No Woman No Cry’.  Sting’s band are all extremely talented with the backing vocalists proving to be as entertaining as Sting. A spectacular version of ‘Fields of Gold’ and super hit ‘Roxanne’ were performed beautifully and with electrifying energy, the crowd singing every word, inturn giving off a classic nostalgic feeling in the air.

Sting and his amazing band filled Rod Laver Arena with the magic and whole hearted goodness that only such a well accomplished and unique entertainer is capable of.  Thankyou Sting for such a truly special and memorable expereince.

Electro Pop Powerhouse Anna O Releases Vivid Single ‘We’ve Got Time’

by the partae February 24, 2023
written by the partae

Previous Support for Anna O

“One of the best voices in Australia right now” (Tone Deaf)

“Part Lorde, part Bjork, and part Royksopp , the band set a backdrop of downtempo electronic pop that is a breath of fresh air…Then, when Anna begins to sing, the entire experience raises to another level.” (Aus Music Scene)

“Love the way the production weaves under your vocal, this is a great new song Anna” 4 / 5 Stars (Zan Rowe, Double J)

Perth/Boorloo-based electro pop artist, Anna O, has continuously captivated the hearts of Australians throughout her career with her illustrious sound since the release of her debut EP back in 2015. Following up on her last release in 2020, she is releasing the commanding and richly produced track ‘We’ve Got Time’ on February 24.

Since joining the Australian music landscape in 2014, Anna O’Neil’s place within the industry has not gone unnoticed. She has supported national acts like Tash Sultana and Thelma Plum and her previous releases have seen a variety of support on Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Tone Deaf and has landed a number of TV placements including a spot on the Australian television show Wentworth.

Now, O’Neil captures a period of her life, navigating the numerous challenges of life as a new mother, as well as the uncovering of her own neurodivergence.

Toeing the line between subtle gracefulness and an all-consuming force of confidence, ‘We’ve Got Time’ is a potent, emotive track that stirs a sense of empowerment and self-belief. Contrasting stripped-back, floaty verses with the soaring choruses that burst with a pulsating beat, upbeat melodies and waves of trance-inducing, razor-sharp synths, O’Neil pushes and pulls with her introspective lyricism and pop sensibilities.

Drawing from her own experience, O’Neil explores the theme of finding your way out, regardless of how tough the situation is.

Managing life as a mother of two with birth trauma, postnatal depression, physical disability and the undiagnosed neurodivergence of both herself and her young children, O’Neil found that her relationship was not what it once was. ‘We’ve Got Time’ is about making the most of hard situations, an ode to her partner and coming back to each other despite the hard times for their family. O’Neil states:

“This song, for me, is about hope. It’s about the life we are building together now, and making a beautiful situation out of what felt like a very broken one. The last two lines of the bridge say ‘Can I see you right in front of me now? Cos you’re my way home. You’re my way home.’ And that’s just it, we’re finding our way home to each other again.”

‘We’ve Got Time’ was produced by Luke Minness (PRISCILLA, Have A Good Day, Yes Lenny), at Panda Candy studio owned by Glenn Sarangapany and Ian Berney of Birds Of Tokyo. Her recent musical partnership with Minness has led to one of the most productive years of her life and ‘We’ve Got Time’ is the first release of many now in the pipeline.

Relish in the enchanting soundscape and tones of Anna O with ‘We’ve Got Time’ on Friday, February 24.

THE UNKNOWNS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM + SHARE SINGLE “SHOT DOWN”

by the partae February 24, 2023
written by the partae

Fresh from their Victorian holiday, The Unknowns are stoked to announce their forthcoming album, East Coast Low, set for release on March 10 via Bargain Bin. With the news comes their new riffing beast of a single, “Shot Down”.

A quick injection of garage punk that rips through your speakers in just two and a half minutes, “Shot Down” really outdoes itself with not one but two guitar solos courtesy of axe slingers Joshua Hardy and Eamon Sandwith, as the former pleads his case for a ‘shot’ at love with a sense of desperation reverberating through the track.

Driven by their passion for timeless music expressing honest emotions, The Unknowns deliver an unassuming simplicity to sharing their truth through bursts of garage rock with power pop sensibilities. Their new album, East Coast Low, is a compilation of songs written by all members – Joshua Hardy (vocals/guitars), Nathan Montgomery (bass), Tom Butler (Drums) and Eamon Sandwith (guitars). Recorded in a week, the songs have a romantic overture that sees Hardy pour his heart out over a bed of nostalgic riffs and unforgettable hooks that would make The Ramones bloody proud.

Hailing from Brissy, The Unknowns have been kicking about since late-2014. The band recently expanded into a four-piece when they welcomed The Chats frontman Eamon Sandwith to the fold (Hardy is also a member of The Chats).

On the stage, The Unknowns perform with the kind of freedom and vigor that gets feet moving and has seen them tour across Australia with Melbourne punk pioneers The Meanies, Ed Kuepper (The Saints), Frenzal Rhomb, The Chats, Clowns, Pist Idiots and stacks more.

TAHLIA EVE

by the partae February 23, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

I am currently based in Melbourne, Victoria where I was born and raised!

How did you first start playing music?

I first began my journey in music during primary school, when one of my teachers told my mum that enrolling me in music lessons would be really beneficial as she thought I had a natural talent for singing at that age. From there I started singing and piano lessons simultaneously and thus began the long musical journey that led me to where I am today. I studied many theoretical exams, performed in many competitions and shows all across Victoria, and even performed in a number of Theatre shows growing up. Music is now a part of my everyday life and I am very grateful to be able to have it as such a large part of my career. Not a day goes by when I am not rehearsing, performing, or just singing around my house!

What’s been happening recently?

I have had quite a busy start to 2023, I’ve been regularly gigging at many venues across Melbourne and Victoria across the last few months, spending a bunch of time in the studio working on new music, rehearsing, rehearsing, and more rehearsing, and honestly planning and getting things set up for the rest of the year.

Please tell us about your experience with Australian Idol:

My time on Australian Idol was absolutely incredible! It was such a blessing to have been a part of the show and to have been able to meet and connect with so many talented artists across the country. Performing for the Superstar judges was a crazy experience in itself! Walking into a room with Meghan Trainor, Amy Shark, Harry Connick Jnr, and Kyle Sandilands is not something you get to do every day, however, I was so lucky to have my beautiful family along for the experience which made it even more special to me. Top 50 week was a crazy week that just flew by, but my most memorable moment was the group challenge where my group Trak’n performed Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop the feeling’, we all bonded so quickly and closely and we were so proud of our performance, especially since we all progressed to the next round!

What have you learned through being on Australian Idol?

Through my idol journey, I have learned how important it is to be able to control or work through your nerves. Due to the high-pressure nature and the huge stakes of the competition, you have to treat every performance as if it is going to be your last. Controlling my nerves was crucial for me as it helped me to feel calm and collected and ensure I was able to enjoy the process and have fun through all of my performances, giving them my all every time. How would you describe your sound and music?

If Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, and Tori Kelly had a baby, that would be the most accurate representation of my sound. Drawing inspiration from different aspects of these artists has definitely made its way into the curation of my sound and lyrics. A reinventive mix of Pop and RnB describes the 90s-influenced sound all my music has.

Who or what influences your sound and songwriting?

My songwriting is fuelled by life experiences and focused on growth, self-love, and relationships combined together with a healthy flair for the dramatic. My aim is to unite audiences through my songwriting with universal storytelling by empowering listeners to live their lives proudly, unabashedly and to the fullest.

Please tell us about any upcoming singles/albums:

I have been in and out of the studio for the last few months working hard on a bunch of new tracks, and I am most excited about what will be my first single for 2023 titled Options. The track is a sleek ode to noughties RnB set for release in April 2023 and I cannot wait for you to hear it!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I cannot get enough of Sza’s new album SOS! I have had it on repeat in the car for weeks on end now and it still sounds as amazing as it did the first time I heard it. Old School Beyonce has come back into my listening rotation and I am absolutely blasting her earlier albums which are nothing but iconic!

What do you like doing away from music?

I am quite a family-orientated person, so aside from music, I spend a lot of time with my family and my grandparents. I am pretty strong on tradition so I love spending as much time with them as possible to learn their recipes, language, and stories to ensure I can carry out their traditions to future generations. I am very big on creating memories, so a lot of my time is spent with my close friends, spending quality time together, and exploring the beautiful city we live in.

What’s planned for 2023?

2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year! I am working on lots of new music and projects behind the scenes. There will be a few new releases this year so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for that, and potentially even my first collab?? Who knows!! But you can bet there will be a new show this year to celebrate this new music! Stay tuned and up to date on my socials!

Favourite food and place to hang out?

Picking just one favourite food is the toughest question to be asked!! I absolutely love a classic bolognese pasta (a very Italian answer I know) and at the moment I’m obsessed with Acai bowls! I have a huge sweet tooth so I also love anything with chocolate in it too. My favourite place to hang out would be the beach! When summertime hits I can’t enough and wish I could be down at the beach every single time the sun comes out!

GRACE WOODROOFE returns with stunning new single ‘BEGINNING’

by the partae February 23, 2023
written by the partae

First release from forthcoming sophomore album
Touring with BEN HARPER this week!

The return of Perth-born, Melbourne-based songwriter and performer Grace Woodroofe, is one in a long journey of reclamation and empowerment. With her first single in eight years, fittingly titled ‘Beginning’, Woodroofe presents herself in her purest form: open, honest and ready to thrive.

‘Beginning’, while serving as an introduction to some, is a beautiful reintroduction to a talented songwriter and musician, who listeners will be hearing much more of as 2023 continues to roll out.

Recorded in Sydney with ARIA-nominated producer Xavier Dunn (Jack River, Peking Duk), Woodroofe used the pain and trauma experienced throughout the course of a long-term relationship to inform her art and ultimately, start a phase of healing that would lead her back to her original love for music.

‘Beginning’, the first single to come from Woodroofe’s forthcoming sophomore studio album, charts the beginning of the end stage of this relationship; the ways in which the reality of an abusive relationship can be  overlooked because, simply, the love itself is so crushing.

“I had written many resentment songs when I first began the process of writing this album. They were the easiest to write about and sit with. When I sat down to write ‘Beginning’, I knew it was time to depict the stages that came before the anger. The bargaining, denial and desperation I had to keep things going was an important phase in the story, and a key part in grief. Holding onto key memories, moments and feelings, in order to divert the pain.”
GRACE WOODROOFE

What results in ‘Beginning’ is an intimate portrait of Woodroofe’s thoughts and feelings as she revisits a painful time of her life – personally and creatively. The relationship, so intrinsically linked to her artistry and career at the time, brought Woodroofe to some of her lowest points.

And so it is with ‘Beginning’ and this forthcoming record, that she demonstrates her journey in finding herself again. The project has been one of fulfillment for Woodroofe, who today re-emerges as a strong individual; her music hopes to provide solace and inspiration for women and people who may be in similar situations – there is a way out and light to embrace.

A seasoned musician both under her own name, as well as indie-electronic moniker R.W. Grace, Woodroofe has attracted national and international attention for her music. Her touring experience has seen her support the likes of Cat Power, alt-j, Glass Animals and Matt Corby, while also impressing on stages at festivals, including SXSW, CMJ New York, Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival and Southbound.

As R.W. Grace, she has enjoyed multiple successes editorially and on radio; the Dave Sitek-produced single ‘Pluto’ achieving high rotation on triple j, the album as well as producing the popular Matt Corby collaboration, ‘#5’.

Since being discovered by the late Heath Ledger at age 17, who facilitated her first record deal (Ledger’s label, The Masses Music), Woodroofe was able to develop her brand of songwriting and storytelling under the mentorship of world-class musicians, including Ben Harper.

Harper, who produced her debut album Always Want, has remained a source of support and inspiration for Woodroofe – the duo set to reunite this year, with Woodroofe supporting Harper on his Australian tour.

“Ben produced my debut album and took me on the road with him when I had just begun my career. Many years later, we are playing shows together again, and I continue to look up to him as a mentor and incredibly supportive friend.

PRAISE FOR GRACE WOODROOFE

“Grace Woodroofe sang like a woman possessed, trying to exorcise herself by sheer force of will. The result was captivating, like watching Fiona Apple, if she were Jack White…”
The Boston Globe

“…a singer and songwriter who can be haunted in one song, jolting in the next and somehow always at home within the darkness she conjures. Every track, gentle or hard, leaves (her) voice exposed in all its doleful intimacy.”
The New York Times

“She has a flawless voice, transitioning from her baritone chest voice, to an angelic falsetto seamlessly. The complete package of talent, uniqueness and charisma.”

Ocean Alley release GTA-inspired video for ‘West Coast’

by the partae February 23, 2023
written by the partae
**** “another welcome jolt of Ocean Alley”
– The Australian

“this album will push Ocean Alley further towards major-global-band status”
– Rolling Stone Australia

“their breezy, summery brand of pop rock is the perfect soundtrack to this time of year”
– Courier Mail

“they are experts of their craft… impeccable”
– Renowned For Sound

Beloved Australian psych-rockers Ocean Alley have mustered up a fresh new video for ‘West Coast’, the latest single from last year’s critically acclaimed album Low Altitude Living.

Directed by Jamieson Kerr (who’s best known for his work with the likes of Skegss, Baker Boy and Ruby Fields), the ‘West Coast’ clip plucks Ocean Alley from their coastal roots and throws them into the seedy, crime-fuelled (and yet, oddly beautiful) world of Grand Theft Auto. Evoking the scenic Californian landscapes of GTA V, we “play” as vocalist/guitarist Baden Donegal as he confronts a NPC (bass guitarist Nic Blom) on a rooftop, navigates an idyllic oceanside mountain and, of course, steals a car and zooms through the streets.

Not everything is what it seems, though, as trippy glitches and jarring jump-cuts make it clear: there’s no cheat code that can save Ocean Alley from this head-spinning simulation. The mountain scenes were shot in New Zealand, while the rooftop and street shots were pulled together in Sydney.

“The song sounds like it’s part of the GTA soundtrack, so we thought it would match up well,” the band said of their ambitious concept for the ‘West Coast’ video. “Mimicking the video game style movements of NPCs was a challenge but it was fun to have everyone involved in the film clip and give their acting skills a crack.”

‘West Coast’ is the fifth single from Low Altitude Living, joining previous hits ‘Touch Back Down’, ‘Deepest Darkness’ (#56 in the triple j Hottest 100 of 2022), ‘Home’ (#62) and ‘Double Vision’ (#59). The album arrived on October 14, 2022, and quickly became a hit for Ocean Alley: it debuted at #3 on the ARIA Top 50 Albums Chart – and #5 on the NZ Top 40 Albums Chart, making it the band’s first album to chart in New Zealand – was honoured as a triple j Feature Album, and saw Rolling Stone praise Donegal as “a magnetic frontman who delivers a soaring vocal performance of heady croons”.

After crushing it in 2022 with a string of worldwide headlining tours – where they sold more than 75,000 tickets across Australia and New Zealand, the UK, Europe and North America – as well as major festival appearances like Lost Paradise and Falls Festival over the New Year period, Ocean Alley kicked off 2023 by arriving at 14 total entries in triple j’s Hottest 100 across their catalogue, featuring for the past six consecutive years. This year, the band will feature on all stops of the Groovin The Moo tour and make an appearance at Darwin’s BASSINTHEGRASS festival in May, before embarking on a 18 date tour of North America in August and September. March 9 also marks the 5 year anniversary of their breakout record Chiaroscuro, with the band teasing updates to come in the weeks ahead.

Rock group Body Type today announce their second album Expired Candy out June 2 via Poison City Records together with their latest single ‘Miss The World’. LISTEN HERE + PRE-ORDER EXPIRED CANDY LP HERE.

Body Type assert there’s no time like the present and speaking to its imminent release, they reveal “Expired Candy is filled with hope, love, and danger, dancing with delicious uncertainty. In pursuit of joy we dreamed up songs about mothers, sisters, dogs, nans; family tantrums, forward motion, falling in love, platonic or romantic, with someone or self. Heart breaks, tooth will shatter, but she’ll be there when it really matters. Flirty, feral and defiant, just how we like it. From our wild heart to yours, Body Type.”

Following their run of shows with Fontaines D.C. earlier this month, the first peek of Expired Candy arrives with ‘Miss The World’. Born out of their time during COVID, ‘Miss the World‘ is a pummelling lament, concerned with citizens’ unquestioning compliance and the ascent of tyrants, told through pre-teen anarchists, bichon frises, and a drum beat based on a Gwen Stefani song. Lead vocalist and guitarist, Sophie McComish shares, “Yeah, yeah, on face value this is a COVID song. But more than that, it’s an ode to the realisations, personal and collective, that occurred during that time. Realisations about society, culture, values, the things that matter, the parts we play. At the end of the day, the world is totally absurd and many things make very little sense when you think about them too hard. But we gotta squeeze these little brains of ours and do the thinking, realise the realisations. Complacency is dangerous, passion is contagious.”

‘Miss The World’ is the first taste of new music from the band since the release of their independently released, Australian Music Prize-nominated debut album Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising. Featuring tracks like ‘Buoyancy‘ ‘The Charm’ and ‘Sex & Rage‘, the 11-track record is a sharp, and invigorating listen packed with gentle contemplation and righteous fury. The praise was far and wide, from Rolling Stone, The Guardian, NME, DIY, Frankie, Clash, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit and more, as well as radio support from all corners of the country landing Feature Album across 2Ser Radio, FBi Radio, SYN FM, Edge Radio and RTR FM.

Freddie Bailey Drops Dreamy Track ‘Want You To Want Me’

by the partae February 23, 2023
written by the partae

Fresh from the top 24 of The Voice 2022, Freddie Bailey captivated the nation and Keith Urban himself. Performing Urban’s hit ‘Wild Hearts’ with the man himself, Bailey is smashing goals at the age of 18. Now the Kamilaroi/Tamworth singer-songwriter is releasing his latest dreamy pop single ‘Want You To Want Me’ on February 23.

Working as a guitar teacher and session musician, Bailey is an in-demand artist. The dynamite artist has opened for Aria Award winner, Fanny Lumsden and Golden Guitar Winners Andrew Swift, and Amber Lawrence. He has also played lead guitar and opened for The Bush Whackers.

Tugging at heartstrings, Bailey taps into the double-edged sword of love with ‘Want You To Want Me’. The warm timbre of Bailey’s vocals is what makes this track. Paired with the aching lyrics “You’ve got something I need, you’re all that I wanted”, burning desire and passion flow through the single.

Known for his moving lyricism, ‘Want You To Want Me’ projects the raw reality of loving someone and the hope that they feel the same. Bailey states:

“I feel like this song can be seen from two different perspectives. One of them being from the perspective of a person who’s been in love with someone for the longest time, hoping they might feel that same longing for them to be a part of their life. The other perspective being from a person who’s experienced that relationship. Left wondering if who they were with ever reminisces on the past and wants it back.”

Allowing the lyrics to engross listeners, the ethereal pop instrumental is delicate and sounds like what a daydream feels like. Flourished with twinkling synth, the suspense of each verse keeps you waiting for the chorus.

Propelling you into a wall of sound, pattering drums and rich, winding guitar puts heavy emotion into the chorus. Weaving guitar solos that release a built-up flurry of emotion and adoration, the single encapsulates the highs and lows of pining for missing tenderness.

Produced and mixed by producer Ben Horsley, and mastered by Joe LaPorta (Sterling Sound), ‘Want You To Want Me’ is an intoxicating indie-pop tune that takes you on a ride that you wish would last forever.

Gigging at many popular venues in his hometown at 14 to busking at the Tamworth Country Music Festival 2018, Bailey has paved the way into the hearts of many. The soulful singer was selected for the Talent Development Project in 2020 operated by the NSW Government Art Unit, graduating in 2022.

Awarded a Variety Heart Scholarship for Music in 2022, he is a two-time graduate of CMAA Junior Academy of Country Music. Completing the Singer-Songwriter and Instrumental courses, this dynamic artist is a force to be reckoned with.

To add to the growing list of achievements for the sky-rocketing up-comer, Bailey’s guitar skills landed him an endorsement with Tokai guitars. Serenading Liam Gallagher’s VIP guests at the ICC to performing the opening song for Rebel NSW Champions of Sports Awards at the same venue, Bailey is already taking the Australian music industry by storm.

Fall into the depths of emotion with Freddie Bailey’s ‘Want You To Want Me’, out Friday, February 23.

Anam Stone Jet Revives Rock Legends With ‘Rainbow Cemetery’

by the partae February 23, 2023
written by the partae

Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne, Anam Stone Jet is the rock’n’roll three-piece that you’d mistake for a band straight out of the 1960s.

A mixture of reverberating guitar, heavy bass lines and eccentric drum patterns, Anam Stone Jet revives the sounds of rock legends akin to Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin. Released on February 23, their latest single ‘Rainbow Cemetery’ and accompanying music video is full of storytelling, eclectic riffs and the wanderlust for the summer of love.

Off the bat from their first release ‘My Back Is Killing Me’, the alt/ rock outfit is only making a start. The band is made up of singer-songwriter and guitarist Keyo Rhodes (he/him), Paige Stanley (she/her) on bass and Ismar Tuzlukovic (he/him) on percussion. With Rhodes’ prolific writing, the forces are stronger now with Tuzlukov and Stanley adding their songwriting skills and musical talent to the bands new tracks that ooze musical inspiration from the past, with a twist within their lyrics relating to the modern day.

‘Rainbow Cemetery’ is exactly what you are looking for in a rock tune. From the moment you pop the song on, the riffs are rich in anticipation of what’s to come. Accompanied by steady drums that crash into a groove with a bass-heavy line driving the track, ‘Rainbow Cemetery’ is like a full-bodied red wine. If you don’t find yourself moving to this song by the first few chords, the echoing chorus will gently carry you into the next all-encompassing verse.

The rumbling rhythm of droning guitar solos that oozes the influence of Jimi Hendrix melds perfectly with the resonating vocals of Rhodes. Punch lyrics take you through a winding journey through the summer of love. ‘Rainbow Cemetery’ is a homage to rock ’n’ roll idols, and what is possibly waiting for us at the end of life.

When asked about ‘Rainbow Cemetery’ Rhodes states:

“Why should the end be symbolized by dismal weather and shades of shadows when life is so full of the spectrum of light which you see, make and live in. To what end is the end, truly? Rainbow Cemetery is the imaginary party that we hope to find at the end of our conscience and a homage to rock ‘n’ roll idols who have opened the world to feelings, questions, fashions and imaginations, which without our perspectives might be much narrower and less curious.

These revelations in entertainment shaped many aspects of the modern world. As time goes on and the pace of our world quickens with every day drawing nearer to the end of rock ‘n’ roll’s pioneers, poets and musicians. Imagine a Rainbow Cemetery with all your favourite dead artists and a party to the end of time. And live again, every day the sun comes up, after the end of the day, while the colour is there for you to see, live again.”

Already enchanting audiences with their live performance and first release, Anam Stone Jet is carving the Australian music landscape with rock roots. Their songs are abundant with authenticity. Covering raw experiences of social observation, politics, heartbreak and justice, layered with the entrancing instrumental of ‘Rainbow Cemetery’, let the track take you to another dimension.

‘Rainbow Cemetery’ and the accompanying music video by Anam Stone Jet revives rock for the modern-day wanderer released Thursday, 23 February. The band launch the single on March 16 at The Retreat Hotel in Melbourne.

Artists: Nytrix
Title: Midnight (feat. LINK)
Label: Dim Mak Records

Download / Stream

Nytrix returns to Steve Aoki‘s Dim Mak with his stunning new single “Midnight,” featuring LINK, a dark vocal house gem that positions the LA-based artist as both a strong producer and talented vocalist. “Midnight” opens with a combination of breathy, ethereal vocals and ominous melodies, leaving the listener wondering as to the genre of this boundary-breaking track. Nytrix picks up the pace with an undulating bassline that gives the production dancefloor credibility while maintaining the feeling of driving down a windy road on an ocean cliff at night with its hauntingly beautiful danger. Following a recent release on Dim Mak, “Midnight” continues to prove Nytrix‘s power as a multitalented and multifaceted artist.

Nytrix caught the attention of the electronic music scene in 2015 when his first single – “Take Me Higher,” peaked at #7 on the Billboard Dance Chart for an astonishing 13 weeks, and he hasn’t let it go since. As a DJ, producer, and vocalist with a genre-bending music catalog ranging from melodic dubstep to various bass and electro-house recordings, Nytrix seamlessly fuses genres together for a sound that’s all his own. His music has found a home on labels such as NCS, Monstercat, Dim Mak, Proximity, and more, and he’s currently gained a viral imprint of over 100M streams, which is steadily growing. In fact, 4 of his past releases have also been featured on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart (all reached Top 10) and spent 51 weeks on the chart altogether. Nytrix has also had live performances and DJ sets that toured internationally through China, the UK, Canada, and the U.S. and has continuously delivered powerful records that have resonated with fans around the world. He’s only going up from here.

About Audio Obscura
Audio Obscura’s mission from the start has always been to help electronic music transcend its traditional boundaries.

Having grown up within club culture, the homegrown Dutch organisation went on a mission to push the artform into new spaces and contexts, helping it to continue evolving and reaching new audiences. Audio Obscura sees the idea of putting raves into spaces that were traditionally off-limits to club promoters as a revolutionary act in the battle to ensure that electronic music garners the respect, protection, and support that it deserves.

The venues represent only one side of the story, however, as Audio Obscura is committed to putting the DJ at the centre stage of every event, further blurring the lines between concert, rave, club and performance. Now as they expand horizons across the world, Audio Obscura is excited about the prospect of entering new spaces and supporting new talents across the world, as well as creating dialogues between leading artists from across the world and their global audiences.
