BEL KIL releases summer-drenched debut EP ‘MY YEAR’ Featuring shimmering single ‘MY YEAR’, she muses on life, love and dreams

Navigating pivotal moments in her life from changing her path as a visual artist and having to re-learn how to sing after a major bike accident, Bel Kil’s debut EP ‘My Year’ is an expansive look into the world of Melbourne based Annabel Kilpatrick.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer, Bel Kil creates summer-drenched tunes wrapped up in nostalgia, evoking a timeless land of sand dunes and golden light that is reminiscent of front runners Milky Chance, Julia Stone and Lana Del Ray.

“Whenever I write I seem to recall events or memories in a sunny or balmy weather scenario, even if I’m reflecting on a sad experience or event.” Bel Kil

PLAY/LISTEN

Her debut EP ‘My Year’ is a multifaceted and soaring undertaking, blending electronic production with indie, rock, hip hop and a hint of funk. Her laid-back vocals and sweeping, anthemic choruses are fused with catchy hooks and witty, reflective lyrics. Her songs are incisive perceptions of life, love and dreams, laid bare on a backdrop of rousing, spirited beats.

“It’s raw, honest, contemplative, reflective, uplifting and anthemic. Each song started without an intention, but rather an experimentation of sound and words that resonated with me and that developed into an idea I was eager to pursue.” Bel Kil

The first song on the EP ‘Escaping’ glides in like a sunrise. Reminiscent of Milky Chance’s breakout debut album Sadnecessary, ‘Escaping’ is a playful song made for a sun drenched trip to the coast. Following this is feature single ‘My Year’ which sees Bel explore the hypnotic soaring tones of her vocals underpinned by a funk laden groove and powerful drums. As the feature single from the album, it is accompanied by a music video that perfectly encapsulates Bel’s dreamy tones and sun-kissed sound.

“The visuals accompanying the single capture the freedom and nostalgia that I explore in my music. I stumbled across a stash of sun-bleached family photos of her mum growing up in Portland in the 70s, as well as images from my own childhood of kids in oversized costumes, playing with yabbies, and climbing over rock pools. Photographer Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore helped me recreate this nostalgic summer feel with a photoshoot at Half Moon Bay. Claudia also captured video footage on Super 8 film to intertwine with family videos, dating all the way back to the 30s.” Bel Kil

WATCH MUSIC VIDEO

The next single ‘Cards’ sees Bel more heartfelt and raw, exploring themes of grief and loss that bring about perspective, weaving a warping soundscape where time becomes relative and the past is viscerally re-experienced in the present. Closing out the EP sees a more laidback Bel in ‘Backup Plan’ who lays her hypnotic vocals in between a psychedelic inspired warped instrumentation. Her soaring vocals dance over the strumming beat.

Bel recently supported Odette for her ‘On Occasion’ Tour and launched her Debut single ‘Escaping’ at The LeadBeater to a packed-out show in August. This single also saw Bel receive Spotify editorial playlisting, as well as support from Max Quinn from Triple J, Pilerats, Ramona, MILKY, Sounds of Oz and more.  Bel will be launching her EP on Friday 9th December at The Toff in Town in Melbourne.

“My previous single launch was insane. I was anxious in the lead up. It was my first headline show and the band and I got covid one by one like dominos so it was touch and go there for a while. I kept waking up in a sweat dreaming no one rocked up but the 350 cap venue was packed out, people were on shoulders and singing the lyrics to songs they’d heard for the first time. I can’t wait to do it all again for my EP Launch at the Toff.” Bel Kil

Camp Cope today announce their latest stream of tour dates, taking to Aotearoa / New Zealand this January 2023. Tickets are on sale now, BUY HERE.

In the wake of their recent US tour, including support slots with Lucy Dacus, Running With The Hurricane, Camp Cope‘s third LP will see the group return to Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland and Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington in late January with support acts to be announced. As one of so-called Australia’s most embraced performers, Camp Cope’s live show was reshaped earlier this year, joined by award-winning multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Aslett (Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly, San Cisco) to deliver a new string of instrumentation, praised as “honest, brave and dedicated.”

Most recently captured in the music video for ‘Sing Your Heart Out‘, Georgia Maq, Sarah Thompson and Kelly-Dawn Helmrich continue to leave audiences captivated and impressed, with live show reviews of their shows across Meanjin / Brisbane’s Tivoli, Eora / Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, Naarm / Melbourne’s Forum over May and later in lutruwita / Tasmania at the Royal Oak in kanamaluka / Launceston and Repuclic Bar in nipaluna / Hobart; boasting “a masterful set” and “The fact that Camp Cope have remained the same at their core means their fans have stayed loyal”; “It’s hard to believe Camp Cope have only been together for little over half a decade.”

Arriving in March to a steady stream of global acclaim, tastemakers locally and abroad have each revelled in Running With The Hurricane’s empowering embrace of new sonic and lyrical ground, including Upset Magazine’s #12 Album of the Year: “Secure in where they stand, it’s heart and soul that shine through – Camp Cope comfortable in their own sonic skin, pushing outwards while looking inwards.”

Camp Cope have also been nominated for Best Group at the upcoming Music VIC Awards and long-listed for the Australian Music Prize, who lauded their latest LP as “Camp Cope’s most complex and accomplished record yet. It’s somehow both raw and polished, with layered vocals and a fuller sound than their previous offerings. Lyrically, still as powerful as ever.”

Throughout Running With The Hurricane’s ten tracks, Camp Cope trade searing vocals and fierce riffs for pianos, multi-instruments, harmonies and more breathing new growth for the trio personally and professionally – older, wiser, and more at peace with the world. Following their critically acclaimed album How to Socialise & Make Friends (2018), Running With The Hurricane reflects faltered romances and secret crushes, vibrating with assured confidence. If Camp Cope‘s self-titled debut (2016) was the spark, and How to Socialise & Make Friends was the fire, Running With The Hurricane is Camp Cope in the calm after the storm.

Running With The Hurricane LP is out now, buy/stream it here.

The Crystal Method

by the partae November 30, 2022
written by the partae

Scott, where are you currently based?

I’m based out of Los Angeles, Ca.

How did you first start playing / performing music?

I first started performing in my living room when I was 10. By performing I mean playing air drums to Metallica & Motley Crue with a couple of sticks but still I was having fun. My first real performance was opening for Information Society by playing keyboards and guitar with a singer by the name of Greg Walsh in the early 90’s.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been touring the states and Canada this past year all while preparing for my return to Australia!

You’re heading to Australia for a tour in December 2022, you haven’t been to Australia since playing at the Big Day Out in 2007, what are you most looking forward to?

Some of my fondest memories have come from those Big Day Out tours. There’s so much… the people are wonderful and kind, the exquisite sights and of course the food and beer.

The Crystal Method are pioneers of the Big Beat genre and Electronica movement, you’ve played the biggest events and festivals across the planet, how has the scene changed since you started?

The Electronic movement has evolved and become more main street ie., EDM which has brought an entire new generation to the party which is a positive for sure. I definitely get a kick out of meeting the kids of our fans at shows especially when they show up together.

How would you describe your sound at this point?

Hmmm, a warm fuzzy kick in ass (-;

Who or what influences your sound and songwriting at the moment?

There are so many brilliant artists out there that I hear and think “How Do They Do That” or “Wow that’s so fucking cool” but I try not to get too caught up in analyzing and try to just absorb and enjoy it.

Where do you see the future of your sound going?

Hopefully not LOUDER.

Any advice for upcoming electronic acts?

Enjoy the process, find your own sound and don’t be afraid to fail.

How do you prepare for live shows?

I’d like to say hours in the gym and meditation but really it’s just a lot of starring at screens and listening to music.

What do you most enjoy about playing live?

Playing music for people and the adrenaline drop I get right before going on.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Preparing for the tour has me listening to way too much of The Crystal Method

What’s planned for 2023 and beyond?

Hopefully being productive and being a positive influence on others.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Great Beer and unhealthy food in a place full of happy people and great music.

MEMPHIS LK Announces ‘Too Much Fun’ EP + new single ‘Coffee’

by the partae November 30, 2022
written by the partae

Following the triple j Good Nights preview of ‘Coffee’ last night, today Memphis LK announces her EP Too Much Fun out Friday, 13th January 2023.

Recently nominated in Music Victoria’s Best DJ category, Memphis LK continues to push genre boundaries with the club-fuelled, pop anthem ‘Coffee’. One to scream along to on the dancefloor, ‘Coffee’ captures the conflicting emotions of being in a situationship, combining silky soft vocals, with energetic, UK underground-inspired production.

This single follows CLASH UK’s Track of the Day ‘Whip’ which was added to full rotation on triple j and Spotify‘s New Music Friday, Front Left, planet rave, Indie Arrivals and crush alongside Apple Music’s New Music Daily and New Music Indie.

Having already garnered a cult online following on TikTok with over 248K followers, and recently supporting Tove Lo and Hayden James alongside Splendour in the Grass and Listen Out, Memphis LK continues her meteoric rise with upcoming performances at Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, Rhythm & Alps (NZ) and Daybreak.

A self-taught DJ and beatmaker already, Memphis LK has turned her attention towards building herself as a producer, fleshing the knowledge she already had out into a fully realised passion. With it comes a newfound confidence in herself as an artist – a confidence that has been infused into Too Much Fun.

This new era for Memphis LK is one marked by a new brand of self-sufficiency and strength, as she re-emerges into the spotlight; her already defined artistry bolstered by added creative and personal growth as a songwriter and producer. The sounds listeners can hear on the record represent Memphis LK creating from a space of complete independence and control; her vision has never been clearer. Creating music with her live shows and audiences in mind has shifted the purview of the new Memphis LK music.

Peach & Quiet ‘This Time’ Premiere

by the partae November 30, 2022
written by the partae

Two years ago the duo Peach & Quiet, aka Jonny Miller & Heather Read, reached out to the world from their log home on Canada’s West Coast with their debut album, Just Beyond the Shine. In a few short months, that record topped the folk and roots music charts in North America and had airplay around the world. Reviewers raved, calling it “a basket of surprises’” ‘superb”, “sublime”, “utterly original.” The album received praise across Canada, the U.S., Britain and Europe, and hit four best of the year lists. One of their songs “Flowers Grow” was even translated into Chinese. Just Beyond the Shine was also named BBC Scotland’s Record of the Week.

Now, the duo is set to release their second album Beautiful Thing in early 2023.This collection of 12 original songs has elements of Americana, blues, rock and overtones of 1970s psychedelic rock that came from Laurel Canyon. Beautiful Thing is produced & backed up with electric, pedal steel and slide guitar by Nashville-based string wizard Steve Dawson (Henhouse Studios), and features a line-up of star players : Chris Gestrin (keys), Jeremy Holmes (bass), and Gary Craig (drums).

Heather and Jonny have created a new album of magic together on their new labour-of-love, Beautiful Thing. Their way of announcing that even in these troubled times, there is hope, courage, and gratitude, that life in these times is indeed “a beautiful thing.”

BAND QUOTE

“Inspired by the story of a dear friend, “This Time” is about what happens when life gives us a second chance, and how to meet it with a whole heart. Co-written with Terry Fernihough.”

Pushing boundaries through sound, music and performance

ΩHM
FESTIVAL OF OTHER MUSIC
Brisbane Powerhouse launches its provocative festival ΩHM (pronounced OHM), an immersive program of music and art set to become one of the city’s most talked about cultural experiences.

From pioneering musicians to post-genre artists, ΩHM pushes boundaries with performances by world-leading artists, including Future Islands, Peaches, The Chills, Kae Tempest, black midi, Nakhane, Monolake + Electric Indigo (Robert Henke + Susanne Kirchmayr) and more.

Curated by the founder of independent Australian label Room40, Lawrence English and Brisbane Powerhouse Arts Program Director, Brad Spolding, ΩHM showcases adventurous approaches to sound, music and performance through hypnotic installations, cutting-edge new works, international headliners and emerging local acts.

Brisbane Powerhouse CEO/Artistic Director Kate Gould said ΩHM was an innovative program attracting national attention.

“As the leader of contemporary art and culture in Queensland, we’re bringing some of the world’s most innovative creators and performers to Brisbane,” Gould said.

“Building on the cultural legacy of our iconic venue, audiences can expect to see more inspired art that agitates and connects.”

Announced today, ΩHM adds a host of boundary-pushing performances and installations to its program. Legendary cinematic remixers Hear My Eyes return to Brisbane with the premiere of Pan’s Labyrinth x Sleep D, audiovisual artist Robin Fox, Los Angeles-based composer Yann Novak and Iranian sound artist mHz take over the Powerhouse in a triple bill of audiovisual performances; and in an Australian premiere Swiss artist Zimoun presents two breathtaking installations which will appear exclusively to Brisbane.

Lawrence English said that ΩHM traces the lines between practices that fall beyond the usual realms and genres we encounter.

“Works like Zimoun’s kinetic sound sculptures, Robin Fox’s expansive audiovisual laser environments and Hear My Eyes: Pan’s Labyrinth x Sleep D exist at a special nexus of sight, sound and space,” English said.

“These dynamic pieces capture intensity and energy matched with a fearless sense of focus. The works are simply mind-blowing.”

Building on the success of sold-out live score shows across Australia, such as No Country for Old Men x Tropical F*ck Storm and Suspiria x King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the latest venture from Hear My Eyes brings together sonic masterminds Sleep D and the magical world of the Academy Award-winning film, Pan’s Labyrinth. Bear witness as the enchanted world of the classic dark fantasy is brought to life by the signature driving rhythms, hypnotic bass and worlds of echo by defiantly DIY duo, and pillars of Melbourne underground, Sleep D. Sitting somewhere between a film screening and a live concert, Hear My Eyes: Pan’s Labyrinth x Sleep D invites audiences into a new sensory realm that is not to be missed.

Enter a space of epic proportions with large-scale audio-visual creations that merge light, laser and sound. Robin Fox presents the Australian premiere of Triptych, described as an audio-visual space-time carving, direct from its world premiere at UNSOUND KRAKOW. The show employs three RGB laser projectors working in synchronicity to realise a full-colour geometry. Robin’s audio-visual performances synchronise sound and visual electricity and have been performed in over 60 cities worldwide including recent installations: Night Sky for Brisbane Festival, Aqua Luma for Mona Foma 2021, Library of Light for Illuminate Adelaide 2021, BEACON for Mona Foma 2022 and MONOCHORD for Rising Festival 2022.

Yann Novak is an interdisciplinary artist and composer whose work is guided by his unique perspective as a queer autodidact. Informed by his partial colour blindness and dyslexia, Novak uses sound and light to explore how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on our own direct experience. Novak’s diverse body of work – which includes audio-visual installations, performances, sound diffusions, recording and prints – invites participants to imagine how divergent our individual perceptions of reality can be.

The work of New Zealand-based Iranian sound artist mHz (aka Mo H. Zareei), highlights the beauty in the basics of sound and light production and audio-visual elements that draw inspiration from material and architecture. mHz has exhibited his work across the globe in venues such as ISEA (Montreal/Vancouver/Dubai), SETxCTM festival (Tehran), NIME (London), Modern Body Festival (The Hague), ICAD (New York) and NZ Festival (Wellington), while his electronic music projects have been published by via Important Records (US), leerraum (CH), and Kasuga Records (DE).

In what will be his first time exhibiting to Australian audiences exclusively for ΩHM, Swiss artist Zimoun presents Material Concerns. Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound using commonplace industrial objects. He principally uses simple materials from everyday life and industrial usage, such as cardboard, DC motors, cables, welding wire, wooden spars or ventilators, and develops small apparatuses which generate a tonal and visual complexity once activated.

These artists join an already full line-up of pioneers including Peaches, Monolake + Electric Indigo and The Chills, alongside formative acts such as Kae Tempest, Nakhane and black midi. Experience something other worldly and explore the possibilities with ΩHM, Brisbane’s newest cultural mainstay celebrating provocative thinking and adventurous approaches to sound, music, light and performance.

RayRay Releases Ethereal, Bass-Driven Debut Studio Album “Unearthly World.” Out Now on Barong Family

by the partae November 26, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: RayRay
Title: Unearthly World
Label: Barong Family

Download / Stream

Powerhouse Taiwanese artist RayRay releases her first-ever studio album on Barong Family, a ten-track body of work titled “Unearthly World” that serves as a stunning and diverse look into the female producer and singer’s psyche and childhood inspiration. The album touches on a myriad of genres, from dubstep to trap to melodic, house, and hardstyle, but is held together with a common thread of ethereality that is reminiscent of the folk tales and fairy stories that RayRay loved while growing up in Taiwan. The opening track, “Wide Awake,” sets a beautifully haunting tone with its emotive vocals and wistful bass, spreading its vein to other titles such as “Hide & Seek” with Nonsens and the lyrically empowering “Butterfly” with RayRay‘s fellow Taiwanese JVNA. She then turns up the heat by heading into hardstyle territory with “404,” with rapid-fire basslines and serrating synths that are not for the weak of heart. Records like “Losing My Mind” with Dirty Audio and “Good Girls Gone Bad” with Dysomnia, featuring OGAQUAFINA, rock a four-on-the-floor house beat perfect for booty shaking on the dancefloor. The entire album is a testament to RayRay‘s evolution as an artist as she seamlessly transitions between soundscapes. Read on for more on her inspiration behind “Unearthly World“:

“‘Unearthly‘ can have a very vague meaning, but I wanted to highlight the fact that it’s a milestone release for me that sonically and aesthetically exists in the same dimension as my previous releases such as EPs – ‘Purple Alien,’ ‘Alien Invasion‘ and ‘Alien Mutation,’ among others. With ‘Unearthly World,’ I want to give the listeners and my fans a diversified body of work that stimulates their imagination with a wide range of music genres and invites them to my own unearthly world of RayRay as a seasoned music producer and a singer.” – RayRay

RayRay has landed loudly and exploded onto the international dance scene in the past few years. With gigs at major festivals like Glastonbury, ADE, Tomorrowland, Sonar, and Arcadia, and her purple hair as her signature look. She cemented her status in the scene as a Red Bull Thre3style competition winner and through a series of studio sessions with artists such as Skrillex, Yellow Claw, Steve Aoki, and Atmozfears. All that while honing and training her vocals with voice professionals. After being named on Beatport‘s HOT 100 Future Bass/Trap Top 10 List in 2016, her work ethic and signature sound caught the ears of Yellow Claw, who brought RayRay on tour in 2019 and quickly signed her to a management deal and to the Barong Family where she released three EPs: “Purple Alien” and “Alien Invasion” and 2021’s Brand New EP “Alien Mutation.” RayRay‘s new home on the Dutch imprint has gotten her name on feverish demand, and today she tours her signature sound all over the globe, creating seismic experiences for her newfound fans. With releases on Spinnin’ Records, Protocol Recordings, Dim Mak, as well as releases on Tiësto‘s label Musical Freedom to follow. Despite the pandemic, 2020 and 2021 didn’t slow her down one bit. With the dance scene at a standstill, RayRay started her live streaming channel on Twitch in early 2020 and, within a year, became the top Twitch “Live Music” Streamer, according to IMS Business report. During the same period landing a residency on Tiesto‘s Musical Freedom Sirius XM Radio show. 2021 saw her release EPs “Lasergun” with Yellow Claw, “Pump It Up” with Moksi, and “Where Are My Friends” with Sihk, to name a few. Needless to say, RayRay‘s spaceship is rocketing across the stars and doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon.

Label: Tomorrowland Music

After releasing “Distant Memory” in 2021, Dutch/Moroccan R3HAB, his fellow Dutch duo W&W and Australian crowd favorite Timmy Trumpet once again join their multi-platinum talents for the new collaborative single “Poison,” out on Tomorrowland Music. With dynamic styles that bridge the sonic spectrum of psytrance and progressive big-room, the boys wrap it up in the perfect package with this already proven collision of forces. “Poison” opens with warped vocals and cinematic melodies, steadily building anticipation and breaking down into a sonorous bassline with stabbing synths and futuristic touches. The new single has true rave energy, bringing to mind the main stages at epic festivals such as Tomorrowland itself, where all three artists performed this year, EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Music Festival, and more, that R3HAB, Timmy and W&W have all graced multiple times. It’s R3HAB‘s and Timmy Trumpet‘s triumphant return to Tomorrowland Music, where R3HAB recently released the festival’s 2022 official anthem “Worlds On Fire” with Afrojack and Au/Ra, and Timmy released his classic record “Vivaldi” with Mariana Bo. “Poison” is bound to be a fan favorite and a memorable debut for W&W on the label, so press play and let this match-up transport you to your best past and future moments on the dance floors across the globe.

“Timmy, W&W, and I have a connection which is rare. After our different collaborations over the years, we’re still easily able to find and share ideas with each other. They’ve become friends rather than colleagues, and I admire them both for their musical talents as well as their strong personalities. What we’ve come up with now blends all our signature styles into a real main-stage record that will resonate with every listener who liked our earlier releases.” – R3HAB

“Working with my brothers from another mother is always an amazing experience in the studio! This is our second collab as a trio, and it won’t be our last. So happy with how this turned out.” – Timmy Trumpet

“After ‘Distant Memory,’ it was about time we made another song with the guys. We really like working with R3HAB and Timmy, as we all complement each other’s strengths! We have great chemistry together and push each other to create the best possible production.” – W&W

R3HAB

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, to anthems such as Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 8B streams to date, including 1.1B in 2021 alone. R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. He is Spotify‘s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 200 most streamed artists, ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

Timmy Trumpet

DJ, producer, and live instrumentalist Timmy Trumpet is undoubtedly one of the most prolific performers in the DJ Mag Top 100. An award-winning, multi-platinum selling recording artist, Timmy has forged his way to the top of the industry alongside influential artists taking the world by storm. His breakthrough release Freaks has reigned in over half a billion streams, reached six times platinum status in Australia, and dominated the charts in ten countries, becoming the highest selling track of all time on Ministry of Sound Australia. In 2020, after over a decade on the scene, the DJ producer issued his first album, Mad World. The set included the singles “911” with R3HAB, “Up & Down” with Vengaboys, and a cover of “Mad World” with Gabry Ponte.

W&W

After meeting up in 2007, Willem van Hanegem and Ward van der Harst came together to form W&W and haven’t looked back since. The Dutch DJ and production duo have transcended the boundaries of genres and traversed the world with their globally acclaimed music and iconic live performances, becoming one of the most sought-after duos the world of electronic music has to offer. As DJs, W&W have been dominating dance floors and festivals across the globe for years on end. Voted #14 in DJ Mag‘s Top 100 DJs poll in 2018, 2020 and 2021, they continually perform at leading festivals such as Tomorrowland and EDC Las Vegas and even had their own headlining tour the same year. W&W continue to prove their status as innovators and tastemakers in the scene under their alias NWYR, where they release blistering productions and live sets from their trance-inspired roots. They also curate music for their brand-new label, Rave Culture, which includes hosting their own bi-weekly radio show on Dutch broadcasting station SLAM!, which has gained them over 300,000 listeners per show plus coverage across North America via Sirius XM. Now shifting into a new phase with a tidal wave of new productions and incinerating live sets, the rise of their new Rave Culture label and the impact of their NWYR alias, W&W are cementing their place amongst dance music’s top acts in signature style: transcending boundaries and never looking back.

Canadian Producer Ashton Adams Teams Up With Ryan Respinto and Alex Price for New House Single “Action.” Out Now on Kyngdom Records

by the partae November 26, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Ashton Adams, Ryan Respinto
Title: Action feat. Alex Price
Label: Kyngdom Records

Canadian artist Ashton Adams is back in full force with his new track “Action” with American DJ/Producer Ryan Respinto and vocalist Alex Price, hailing from Canada. Opening with soulful vocals layered over a groovy bassline, Adams and Respinto seamlessly build into a bouncy and house-forward drop. The elements of garage and bass give the track a unique touch that crosses genre boundaries, making it feel at home, whether on the radio or in the club. “Action” is out on Adams‘s own label Kyngdom Records; he also debuted earlier this year on Ultra Records and recently co-wrote and co-produced “Aces” for Connor Price and Idris Elba. Read on for the full story behind the track from Ashton himself, and keep an eye out for more new music from all three talented artists.

“My TikTok and Instagram this year has been doing pretty well with a few viral videos, and I have been able to build an awesome fan base and connect with house music lovers across the world, including some awesome producers. I connected with Ryan over TikTok, and we began sending ideas back and forth, and we came up with “Action.” We knew this one was special, and we took the time to really refine it to make sure that the listener is taken on a journey from beginning to end. ‘Action‘ is one of my favorite tracks that I have worked on this year. The vocals and the way the track moves is special, and I believe every dance music fan that listens to it will love it.” – Ashton Adams

As a producer, label owner, and drummer, Ashton Adams has had an illustrious career shaped by creating and collaborating on music that represents his love of underground hip-hop and house music. He has worked with many artists and brands in various capacities, including viral Tik-Tok star 347aidan, Bryan “BC” Cockett, Vito Luprano (Celine Dion‘s executive producer), Miami‘s Hit Factory where Nicki Minaj, Timbaland, Daddy Yankee, AC/DC, and more recorded at where he met 100M’s. He is also the founder and operator of the Canada-based Kyngdom Records and Kyngdom Studios, where signed artists include the popular Justin Bieber doppelganger, Brad Sousa. To add to his resume, Ashton will also be touring with renowned Canadian rock band Stereos as a drummer with Brad Sousa for their reunion tour in the summer of 2022. He gives back to the community as a high priority and partnered with The Waterloo Region District School Board to offer classes for high schoolers who are passionate about singing, rapping, music production, photography, and cosmetology. Stay tuned for more music coming from Ashton Adams in the near future.

Justine Blanchet

Where are you currently based?

I am currently based in Montreal but often travel to Nashville to continue working on my music.

How did you first start playing music?

I grew up in a musical family and learned a variety of instruments. I then went on to begin singing classical crossover at 11 years old. I moved on to singing country music when I was 15 and started to write my own songs as well.

What’s been happening recently?

A lot has been happening! I’m in the process to finishing the recording for my upcoming EP and filming more music videos.

Your latest single ‘Hard to Love’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

This song was written by Courtney Cole, Derrick Southerland, and Kelly Archer. This song was pitched to me in a playlist of about 12 songs, but I picked it because it was very personal to me.

What does this single mean to you and how did the writing process take place?

Even though I didn’t write this song, the lyrics and meaning still hold a lot of significance for me because I went through a toxic relationship with a partner that was very emotionally unavailable.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I worked with Danick Dupelle in Nashville for this song! I recorded it back in Montreal and had the tracks sent to Danick for production and mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?

I was in Nashville when we started building the track. Because the song already had a good demo, we went ahead and used it as inspiration. The track begins with a simple acoustic guitar and synthetic drums, but we chose musicians to come into the studio and record the different instruments that we wanted on there.

Please tell us about your upcoming EP, the writing influences and what this EP means to you:

The EP is coming in the spring of 2023 and will be comprised of 5 songs all written by amazing people. I didn’t write any of the songs and that’s purely because we wanted the best of the best on the album while I keep developing my songwriting skills. This EP means a lot because it’s a three year long project and lots of money and time was poured into this creation. I hope it leads to great opportunities.

How’s the Nashville music scene at the moment?

The scene is great! There are a lot of people in Nashville but the town is small when you think about it. Everybody knows everybody and the community is tight knit and supportive of each other.

Please tell about living and recording in Nashville:

I love that the weather is so nice in the fall! I come from up north, where t-shirt weather doesn’t last very long. The neighboring cities are so pretty and there is so much scenery and history in Tennessee. There is always a concert or show somewhere in Nashville so it’s very hard to get bored in this town.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lots of artists – namely Lainey Wilson, Morgan Evans, Bailey Zimmerman, Elvis Presley, Olivia Newton-John, and The Lettermen. I really appreciate all kinds of genres.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I’m in Nashville at the moment and then I will go home for the holidays and save up some more money to come back to Nashville in 2023.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’m not a picky person but I love a good apple crisp especially at this time of year. I love the Elliston Place Soda Shop here in Nashville! Super cute little retro diner.

Jordan Peak Returns – Launches Peak Trax imprint with new ‘Ultrasonic’ EP

by the partae November 25, 2022
written by the partae

Jordan Peak triumphantly caps his welcome comeback with the launch of his own imprint Peak Trax and its first release, 3-tracker ‘Ultrasonic’. The DJ/producer had top line support from the off, blasting onto the scene with his powerful classic house and techno, together with a more experimental strand… before complications stemming from cystic fibrosis and a bad experience of being spiked at a gig led to battles with anxiety and depression, imposing a musical hiatus from which he emerged this summer with his ‘Less Drama, More Party’ EP which as before, garnered support from BBC Radio 1 big names.

Jordan explains his new label’s mission: ‘Each release will be 3 tracks by me, to showcase all the different sounds and genres I make and play. It will always have a house track, a techno track then a non 4/4 track (breaks, electro, jungle, maybe even something downtempo and non-clubby but more cinematic).’ The EP starts as he means to go on:

‘Ultrasonic’: no holds barred house kicks, rattling hi-hats, reverbing bass and assertive male vocal riffing rhyming couplets, inset with a suspenseful breakdown – his patterns stamp themselves on the brain then shift, creating a succession of compulsive hooks.

‘Track 07’: more hardcore dance floor fuel, with classic techno bounding bass drum and backbeat claps, spiced with heavy synth notes in staggered, urgent riffs,  with breakdowns of muffled synth building to more speed, more hypnotic engagement of feet and mind.

‘Lose Your Mind’: A beat for cheerleaders from hell, juddering synth notes, a robotic voice intoning ‘lose your mind’, going woozy and psychedelic in the breakdowns before a moog-y synth like a dystopian police siren enriches the intriguing soundscape.

Having emerged stronger than ever from a personal ordeal, newly inspired to make and share great music, Jordan Peak is ready to climb his next mountain.

NEW ALBUM FROM THE SMITH STREET BAND OUT TODAY + VIDEO CLIP FOR NEW SINGLE + NATIONAL AUSTRALIAN TOUR ANNOUNCE

by the partae November 25, 2022
written by the partae

“It’s The Smith Street Band at their finest, with Life After Football highlighting a renewal of the group’s pub rock roots” – Forte Magazine

Today marks the release of The Smith Street Band’s sixth album, Life After Football. The follow up to their ARIA #1 album Don’t Waste Your Anger which was also recorded by bass player “Fitzy” at the band’s solar powered studio in regional Victoria.

“It’s been a long time coming, trying to record around lockdowns and shut downs and everything else was tough but we’re so happy with what we’ve made and are very excited to show you! This album is more defiant than depressed, more upbeat than down trodden and is inspired by a search for meaning and what’s next. We’ve all lived through a once in a lifetime event, some of us have lived through multiple once in a lifetime events, and it can be hard to come to terms with what we’ve been through and what comes next. But hopefully this summer feels like summers past and this album helps with that feeling a little” said the band’s lead singer, Wil Wagner, of the new album.

Featuring the singles ‘I Don’t Wanna Do Nothing Forever’, ‘Everyone Is Lying To You For Money’, ‘Life After Football’ and ‘A Conversation With Billy Bragg About The Purpose Of Art’, the album embodies The Smith Street Band’s trademark prolific songwriting while offering some of the shortest and fastest songs the band have released to date. Life After Football was mixed by Anton Hagop (Silverchair, Powderfinger) and mastered by George Georgiadis.

The band have also shared the news that they will be touring the new album in February, March and April 2023, visiting most capital cities in the country, and kicking off the tour with The Smith Street Band’s first ever show in Albury.

The Life After Football Australian Tour will see The Smith Street Band joined by friends and previous touring buddies, Press Club who are fresh off a huge European tour in support of their latest album Endless Motion. The two bands undertook a massive 35 date Australian tour together in 2018. Tickets for the 2023 shows are on sale from Tuesday November 29.
