Coco Elise talk about their debut ep, making music on GarageBand, and more

by the partae October 31, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are currently based in Boorloo, Perth,, chillin.

How did you first start playing music?

I was given a guitar as a child, then was spoken to by the musical gods and learned my one true calling was to play music and with this, I began to write music. And with that, here we are. Welcome.

What’s been happening recently?

Music-wise we’ve started to really get into it, we’ve got a lot of new tunes we’re really excited about! We’ve just been playing a lot of shows and feeling them lows. We’ve also been a bit sad, and that’s not all bad. It’s important to feel as sad as possible when writing music so emotion can be successfully portrayed.

What influenced the sound and songwriting for your new single ‘Wish you’d show’?

Mainly Mac de Marco and Kate Bollinger, with a dash of Vampire Weekend. Big fan of how they can make such stripped back music sound so good.

How did you go about writing Wish you’d show and what does this track mean to you?

This track and “Sun may shine” were kind of written at the same time, Harry came over and did some Saxophone overdubs on a beat I came up with while Isaiah was asleep on the couch. Our old bass player Dan came around after and tracked some fantastic bass bits after. It’s by far our favourite song at the moment, and it’s a classic little love song. There’s definitely heaps out there, but they always mean the most to whoever’s making them!

Your debut EP is on the way, please tell us about your journey with this EP:

This EP has a special place in my head as it’s been completely produced and mixed in my room on GarageBand. Starting out I didn’t have too much to work with and I feel like a nice unique sound has come out of the process. I’ve been sitting on these tracks for a while, and was pretty unsure how they’d be received. We’ve had some awesome support lately, and it feels really good to get them out.

What can we expect?

Life. Thrills. Freedom.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

All tracks were mastered with Gareth Henderson (thanks Gareth), everything else was done with the band in my bedroom.

How did you approach the recording process?

I usually just play around on the guitar or a synth and see if anything nice comes out of that, that’s usually the first step. Then I sing over whatever I have, and build everything else from there. Every song’s a little different!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

A lot of Kate Bollinger, and a local resurfaced band Butter who are just amazing.

What do you like to do away from music?

Play with animals, change the world, and inspire the generation to come.

What’s planned for 2022 going into 2023?

We’re absolutely loving playing live gigs around town, so we’ll keep doing that! We love reworking the songs for live performances, keep its really fun for us and hopefully people who come see us as well. We’ve got another EP ready to go as well, stay tuned…

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We love getting burgers at Flipside in Freo, and see whatever is going on at Mojo’s. Perhaps even have a nice beverage, if we’re feeling crazy.

Wet Denim

by the partae October 30, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are currently based in Pōneke (Wellington, New Zealand)

How did Wet Denim form?

Brothers Joe and Jack (Bass & Drums) have been jamming together all their lives and have always wanted to be in a band together. After both moving to Wellington, it was the perfect opportunity to make this happen. Joe saw Nick perform at an open mic night a couple of months before the idea of Wet Denim came about, (and quickly forgot about him!). When it came time to fully assemble the band, Jack brought in his flatmate Luca on guitar and keys, and Joe finally remembered to ask Nick to join.

What’s been happening recently?

Coming out of the gate in May, post Covid, we were hungry to play as many shows as we could. Over the next four 4 months we played 8 local shows in Wellington including some sold out headliners. During this time we were also working on recording our EP. In the more recent months, the live shows have been put on the backburner whilst we wrapped up the EP recording, and as we prepare for our final Wellington show in 2022.

How’s the NZ music scene at the moment?

The NZ music scene, more specifically the Welly live scene has been pumping since shows started again yearly this year. Everyone is super supportive of each other, going to each other’s shows, promoting music, it’s a real community vibe.

Your latest single ‘Free’ is out on the 27th of October, what’s influenced the sound and songwriting?

All of the music we collectively listened to growing up has influenced our songwriting big time. This recent track takes quite a ‘Kings of Leon’ approach that we all froth!

How did you go about writing ‘Free’?

At the start of 2021 Joe was playing around on the Logic Pro X recording software and came up with the first idea of ‘Free’ with the intro up until the first verse. When we had our first jam he showed everyone the idea and from there we formed the idea into a full song  – with Luca adding his sauce, Nick singing the melody and Jack driving the groove. And that’s what really grew our bond as a band. ‘Free’ was our very first song we finished.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Recording ‘Free’ began in Joe’s bedroom and then was taken to Avalon studios where we worked with Shaan Singh and Ben O’Leary, who helped us take the track from a demo to a release quality track.  ‘Free’ was mixed by Neil MacLeod and  mastered by Chris Chetland at KOG Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?

As mentioned before, the original demo of ‘Free’ was the fruits of Joe working away in his bedroom studio. We developed the ideas whilst jamming which Shaan and Ben then helped us track into the song.

What do you most enjoy about touring NZ?

We haven’t got there yet, but we have a few shows and festivals over summer that are outside of Pōneke that we are super excited for!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

We are really loving the music that is coming out of Wellington at the moment. Arjuna Oaks, Haven, Mikeyy, Frank on Tap, and Revulva are a few of our faves.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jack and Luca are both designers, visual and spatial respectively, which takes up a bunch of their time, Nick is right into his fitness and Joe has nothing else going for him.

Favorite food and place to hangout?

We love to hang at Raglan Roast Cafe and sip on their yummy yummy brew.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We have just recently released our second single ‘Free’. On November 17th we have our first headlining show at San Fran which will act as a taster for our EP set for release in December. We have a soggy summer lined up where we will be stretching our legs and taking our EP outside of the capital. You can catch us at Cape Estate on Boxing Day, Outfield Festival, and 121 Festival. Yeooooww!

Powerhouse Asian Female Producers – RayRay and JVNA, Join Forces for Their Emotive but Hard-Hitting Bilingual Collaboration “Butterfly” From RayRay’s Forthcoming Debut Album “Unearthly World.” “Butterfly” is Out Now on Barong Family

by the partae October 30, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: RayRay & JVNA
Title: Butterfly
Label: Barong Family

Download / Stream

RayRay teams up with JVNA for a stunning collaboration – “Butterfly” from RayRay‘s upcoming debut album, making for a union of two killer females, originally hailing from Taiwan RayRay and US-born Taiwanese JVNA. The single showcases both artists’ talents perfectly, from JVNA‘s and RayRay‘s dreamy singing performances to both future bass and melodic trap production prowess. Opening with sultry, breathy vocals and an ominous bassline, “Butterfly” starts with an ethereal feel and blossoms into a drop featuring serrating synths and deep bass undertones that give it an edge. The mixture of feminine emotiveness and unquestionable sonic confidentiality makes the track an unusual creation where the lyrics are sung in English and Mandarin. RayRay and JVNA‘s collaboration is out now on Yellow Claw‘s Barong Family imprint and will also be featured on RayRay‘s forthcoming debut album “Unearthly World.” Read on what both artists have to say about their new release:

“One of my favorite songs on the album. It’s definitely a unique combination between me and JVNA. I’ve wanted to work with her for a very long time. She is such an inspiring person. It’s very interesting and fun to blend her airy music sound with my hard trap elements together. We started making this song in July 2021 last year and actually came up with the vocals first. Be strong and brave, and eventually, you will be like a butterfly emerging from the cocoon. This is also the experience we have been learning as artists. Life isn’t a bed of roses, and there are a lot of obstacles. However, as long as you pull it through, you will become a beautiful butterfly. It’s also a tribute to our friends and fans in Taiwan and Asia.” – RayRay

“I wrote ‘Butterfly‘ with RayRay wanting to write a track that felt empowering to both of us. As female producers/DJs we’ve bonded over our experiences of being in a male-dominated industry and the feeling of needing to prove ourselves constantly. This song is about taking a leap of faith in pursuing our dreams, becoming the person we want to become, and succeeding in our goals. When RayRay and I initially met, we clicked instantly. She is one of the few friends I have in the industry to whom I can relate and talk about the similar struggles and experiences we have in our work field.” – JVNA

RayRay has landed loudly and exploded onto the international dance scene in the past few years. With gigs at major festivals like Glastonbury, ADE, Tomorrowland, Sonar, and Arcadia, and her purple hair as her signature look. She cemented her status in the scene as a Red Bull Thre3style competition winner and through a series of studio sessions with artists such as Skrillex, Yellow Claw, Steve Aoki, and Atmozfears. All that while honing and training her vocals with voice professionals. After being named on Beatport’s HOT 100 Future Bass/Trap Top 10 List in 2016, her work ethic and signature sound caught the ears of Yellow Claw, who brought RayRay on tour in 2019 and quickly signed her to a management deal and to the Barong Family where she released three EPs: “Purple Alien” and “Alien Invasion” and 2021’s Brand New EP “Alien Mutation.” RayRay‘s new home on the Dutch imprint has gotten her name on feverish demand, and today she tours her signature sound all over the globe, creating seismic experiences for her newfound fans. With releases on Spinnin’ Records, Protocol Recordings, Dim Mak, as well as releases on Tiësto‘s label Musical Freedom to follow. Despite the pandemic, 2020 and 2021 didn’t slow her down one bit. With the dance scene at a standstill, RayRay started her live streaming channel on Twitch in early 2020 and, within a year, became the top Twitch “Live Music” Streamer, according to IMS Business report. During the same period landing a residency on Tiesto‘s Musical Freedom Sirius XM Radio show. 2021 saw her release EPs “Lasergun” with Yellow Claw, “Pump It Up” with Moksi, and “Where Are My Friends” with Sihk, to name a few. Needless to say, RayRay‘s spaceship is rocketing across the stars and doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon.

California-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JVNA produces electronic music that plays at the dichotomy of light and dark, bass and melody, organic and synthetic. Raised by Taiwanese immigrants, JVNA studied classical piano from the age of 6 and started writing songs when she was 11. Her studies continued at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she learned to score films and video games. Initially, JVNA made fun edits and remixes of her favorite anime and video game soundtracks; her take on MapleStory‘s “Login Theme” caught fire on the internet, earning half a million views in 24 hours. Her 2018 song “I’m With You,” inspired by her father’s death two years earlier, dared to dive deep into an emotional world. JVNA self-directed the song’s music video. The Follow-up single “Catch Me,” released in 2019, took JVNA on a sold-out tour across the United States. Due to the pandemic, it was canceled, and JVNA returned to the studio to focus on the album’s production. She pushed herself to incorporate more live keys, piano, and organic textures. In 2021 JVNA released her debut studio album – “Hope In Chaos,” which is a diverse collection of styles featuring JVNA‘s voice like it’s never been heard before, opening up about so much more than the standard dance floor love songs.

Emerging Australian Artist WILL K and Dutch Trio Drove Team Up For Club-Driven House Single “Ghost” on Monstercat

by the partae October 30, 2022
written by the partae

Following his chart-topping single “Flip Reset” with Kaskade and this year’s “I Don’t Really Care” with Neville, Australian house producer WILL K returned to Monstercat today, joining forces with Dutch electronic group Drove for the evocative single “Ghost.” The addictive groove, hypnotizing pads, and dreamy bassline are sonically reminiscent of fellow Aussie tastemakers like Cassian and Rüfüs Du Sol, yet distinctively driven by WILL’s eccentric artistry. Aptly titled just ahead of Halloween, the velvety vocals and dark chords make for a haunting heartbreak anthem.

WILL K shares, “Drove and I knew we had to make a record together as a lot of our fans kept tagging us together on social posts! After sending a few ideas back and forth, I came across the vocal of “Ghost” and knew it was something special, and I wanted to bring a Rüfüs Du Sol-inspired/moody vibe with the production.”

Drove adds, “The song itself is about coping with having to let go of someone after a breakup. Lyrically we tried to describe situations in which you realise the most of what you’re missing in your life. That someone you were so close to now feels like a stranger to you.”

For nearly a decade, WILL K has been climbing the electronic circuit with dominating dancefloor hits, including his recent track “OoooH” with CID, which went to #2 on Beatport and saw support from Steve Aoki, Alesso, Nicky Romero, and many more. After headline tours in Australia and Asia, he’s performed across the world’s biggest festival stages including Tomorrowland, Creamfields, and Parookaville. As he continues to take his project to new heights, expect more genre-pushing from WILL K in the months to come.

Brisbane/Meanjin’s darkwave psychedelic outfit Dream Dali delivers their sincere-sounding debut album, ‘Letters From The Light’ (October 28).

Dream Dali have opened the gates to purgatory with their three latest trance-inducing singles: ‘Rosary’, ‘Wicked Sunday’ and ‘Wandering’. Following their performance at BIGSOUND festival in 2019, Dream Dali have released their debut EP and have seen support from notable media outlets Pilerats, Tone Deaf, Music Feeds, Livewire and AAA Backstage, building anticipation for this dynamic and refined debut album.

‘Letters From The Light’ features Dream Dali’s latest releases and the reverb-drenched guitars, modulated synths and atmospheric percussion that comes along with them. The opening track, ‘Let Love In’, explores the elusive and mysterious nature of love and investigates the deeper elements that underpin it. The lagging fluid drums and guitars are paired with smooth, rising vocals leaving room for ethereal synth leads.

The following tracks ‘Rosary’ and ‘Wandering’ pick up the pace of the album with the darkwave 80s sound that Dream Dali is characterised by. These tracks incorporate retro drums and a shoegazed atmosphere to explore thoughts hidden in one’s subconscious whilst stuck in a back alley club or a shipping container somewhere in the outskirts of the city.

‘Hold Me Down’ and ‘I Haven’t Slept’ explore feelings of distrust and question the words of a reassuring lover, asking yourself; is this help or are these empty words of self-righteousness and obliviousness?

Moving forward, ‘She Wants’, ‘Without A Soul’ and ‘Caught Beneath’ portray the feelings of heartbreak after the end of a relationship where everything you had was given. The pieces are on the floor, and the hazy gaze blinds your vision, but you give everything you can–this is the feeling encapsulated in ‘Letters From The Light’. The album ends with Dream Dali’s well-received single ‘Wicked Sunday’, and a final atmospheric darkwave experience, ‘Being Or Becoming’.

‘Being or Becoming’ experiments with various synth sounds and modulated guitars to create a menacing, yet trance-inducing atmosphere that explores the question: are we in the moment, or are we waiting for when we are? Each instalment of ‘Letters From The Light’ dives into the subconscious whilst creating music free of creative restrictions. This artistic purism is devoid of the fear of judgement and truthfully explores coming to terms with your own values and beliefs.

Delving into the dire undertones of their dreamy debut album, Aldous Emerson provides us with their synopsis on ‘Letters From The Light’:

“This album is a cumulative effort of passion from over five years of work. Whilst some of the songs have been created within the last year in an impulsive and instinctive manner, this album represents the essence of Dream Dali and what we have worked towards conceptually within the last few years.

The songs on this album represent a deep dive and exploration into the subconscious and at the same time experimenting with the impulsive and instinctual nature of creative freedom without judgement.

‘Letters From The Light’ can be a book, a thought, a hope, a sudden sadness, bit overall a genuine attempt at real feelings and expression”

Building momentum with each release, Dream Dali has dazed heads at Music Feeds, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Aus Music Scene and Australian Musician. Their atmospheric marches have been played on domestic and international community broadcasts such as 4ZZZ, 2SER, idobi Anthem (US), The Most (NZ) and many more.

Dream Dali’s debut album, ‘Letters From The Light’ is set to drop everywhere on October 28.

Synth-Pop Sensation PRISCILLA Delight With Their New Single ‘Lose Control’

Stream ‘Lose Control‘

Proving once again that they’re “the electro-pop sound of the future” (as heralded by Purple Sneakers), Boorloo/Perth-based duo PRISCILLA are set to release another incredible sensory smash. Titled ‘Lose Control’, this next track will be out on Oct 28, and stuck on repeat ever after.

Debuting in 2018, and with 7 singles already under their belt, PRISCILLA have set the stage for The Presets, Wafia, San Cisco, Haiku Hands, ALPINE, and Woodes, and played at a multitude of festivals along the WA coastline.

Climbing to greater heights seems inevitable for PRISCILLA, and ‘Lose Control’ is set to take them there.

In ‘Lose Control’, P Gardner’s voice gracefully carries the track’s plea for surrender straight to the heart, powerfully punctuated by synth bursts that beat alongside. The pared back verses hold ample space, welcoming the glittery cascades of Luke Minness’ twinkly production and granting them attention to oscillate and catch the light. It’s easy to picture a packed dancefloor or sweaty festival crowd dancing along in a powerful moment of euphoric bliss, a vision that will soon become a reality.

‘Lose Control’ is angry at the world, but celebratory of the strength found in community and the euphoria that can be experienced when surrounded by people who affirm and understand. P states:

“Feeling at home in your own environment, taking up space, or feeling safe in your own body are some things that others may take for granted because they have never had to think about it. Not all of us get to experience a secure sense of feeling comfortable and safe enough to completely let go, lose control, and be ourselves without fear of the external consequences coming from hateful and loveless places.”

PRISCILLA have already been given the nod from plenty of industry insiders, including but not limited to Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Purple Sneakers, RAGE, Pilerats, FROOTY, RTR FM, 2RRR, 4ZZZ, Radio Adelaide. PRISCILLA’s track ‘Follow’ featured on Spotify’s ‘Out Now’ pride playlist, has been streamed 130K times and ‘Dance Through the Night’ earned the group their 4th consecutive year of WAM nominations, this time for (Pop) Song of the Year 2022.

The duo are looking ahead to summer when they are set to support The Veronicas during the Summer Festival at the Ice Cream Factory on December 2 and launch their single at Fremantle Arts Centre on December 11.

Catch the latest hit from PRISCILLA, ‘Lose Control’ when it’s out on Oct 28.

Out now The Grogans WHICH WAY IS OUT album + Which Way Is Out Exhibition at Record Paradise Melbourne

by the partae October 28, 2022
written by the partae

“We’re not exactly sure WHICH WAY IS OUT but, when it comes to The Grogans, we’re definitely all in.” – Bryget Chrysfield, Beat Magazine.

“Good vibes all round soundtrack to take with you on the road, the beach…anywhere!” – Claire Mooney, Triple J

“It’s high time you familiarised yourself with these future stars.” – Live At Your Local

Artist: The Grogans
Album: WHICH WAY IS OUT
Release Date: Friday 28 October
Label: Cousin Will Records

The wait is finally over for Melbourne’s genre bending trio The Grogans’ third studio album WHICH WAY IS OUT, out Friday 28 October via Cousin Will Records. An album encompassing the trio’s legacy of lucrative, finger-on-the-pulse songwriting, combining their love of a past aesthetic with a modern day twist. After a busy year with two national tours, and their first run of international shows in New Zealand, The Grogans are finishing off their ‘No Thanks (I’m Going To See The Grogans)’ tour with a sold out release day show plus extra shows added at HABA in Rye, and an album exhibition at Record Paradise on Sunday 6 November.

WHICH WAY IS OUT was based around a similar workflow we have taken on previous releases. The idea of going away to write/record has been the best way for us to completely be involved in the project. I think it allows us to step back from the other responsibilities in our life for just a minute and set our minds on one thing at a time – Quin Grunden, The Grogans

Out on indie record shelves now, WHICH WAY IS OUT seamlessly blends the genre borderlines between heavy, cruisy, and acoustic tracks to create a fresh twist on the classic Grogans sound. The work is bookended by themes of friendship, beginning with the trio’s anthem ‘Bugs’ – “If I’m alright, I got you by my side, now I’m alright” and coming full circle for ‘Lucky Enough’, a track simply about the love of the band and their beautiful community. Meandering through the material, The Grogans explore the depths of their expanding genres, with singles ‘Inside My Mind’ and punk wrapped love song ‘Be Your Man’, alongside reverb drenched ‘Blurred Vision’, and singles ‘Just A Kid’ and ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing) going back to their surf-rock roots. Gritty ballad ‘Le Fangz’ delves into the story of an imaginary creature, while ‘Who Knows’ touches on the existential overwhelm and intensity of the world we find ourselves in, and one take track ‘Take It Or Leave It’ sees the boys taking life day by day.

“We have said it before but I think it’s something we will have to say as long as we are putting out records, that being our desire to keep trying to force ourselves out of a specific ‘ one genre band’ and explore new ideas within the sound that we have developed  so far.”  – Quin Grunden, The Grogans

The album has deliveredsuccessful singles ‘Just A Kid’, ‘Be Your Man’, ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’, and ‘Inside My Mind’, collectively added to Spotify’s New Music Friday AU & NZ, Fresh Finds AU & NZ, Rock Out, and Local Noise playlists, plus music video adds on Rage and MTV.  This latest release, WHICH WAY IS OUT, deploys an extensive variety of stylistic influences with cohesion and conviction, from Angus’ punctuated guitar riffs and and Jordan’s propelling rhythms, with Quin’s viscous vocals, as the tracks range from reverb drenched chants to honeyed croons.

Sunday 6 November The Grogans will host a WHICH WAY IS OUT exhibition at Melbourne’s Record Paradise presented by Cousin Will Records. Come and immerse yourself in all things Grogans from 11am – 5pm, with prints from NEWKINGJARDINE, vinyl, exclusive merch, and free beer, set to the sounds of their albums, old and new.

LEER shine on their dazzling and club ready debut EP ‘Optimize’

by the partae October 28, 2022
written by the partae

BUY/STREAM: LEER – OPTIMIZE EP

Sydney-based LEER, made up of Lachlan Henderson and Tom Eady, have been on the rise in the electronic music scene for some time. With a handful of epic releases under their belt they have revealed their anticipated debut EP ‘Optimize’, out now via Sweat It Out. Expanding beyond the roots of electronic dance, the 5 track body of work demonstrates the duo’s work ethic as staunch producers, whose mastery in creating immersive soundscapes is evident throughout the extended play.

Opening up about the release, LEER shares “The EP marks the start to our creative journey and encapsulates our growth over the last year. Starting with a bunch of bedroom club bangers we developed our sound and the result is sick. We’re stoked with this being our first official body of work and can’t wait to play it out!”

The project begins with their impactful debut single ‘Friends (Feat. fio)’. Released in May of this year, the track boasts a bouncy baseline infused with fio’s sultry vocals making for the perfect euphoric dance floor filler. Second in the project is cinematic title track ‘Optimize’, which finds the producers reaching new heights sonically, laying down the groundwork with a classic electro sound atop smooth instrumentation and mixed with energetic synth stabs. This cool club track packs a hard punch while keeping listeners revelling in the sublime reality of it all.

The spellbinding ‘Back to Back (Feat Woodes)’ follows as the third track in the project. The tantalsing club anthem sees the duo-branch out into elements of techno and house, among other sub-genres all while retaining all the key elements that make LEER’s productions so addictive. Next up is ‘You Get Me’ with a driving foundation of downtempo rhythms and instrumental electronica charged with airy distorted vocal intermissions. This hard hitter is sure to feature at a warehouse rave near you soon. The duo closes out the EP with ’Runna’ which cements the duo’s reputation as purveyors of deep club cuts. LEER’s unique production style is on full show with this infectious melody you’ll be replaying in your mind all day. Both Lachlan and Tom showcase their talents in tandem throughout ‘Optimize’, beautifully weaving a package that remains otherworldly.

DJ and producer duo, LEER burst onto the scene earlier this year parading their way around a club hook, by crafting magnetic bass lines over cascading synthesisers and transfixing drops. Releasing ‘Friends (Feat. fio)’ and ‘Back To Back (Feat Woodes)’ in the lead up to the EP release, the two have received a tremendous amount of support from some of the most prominent in the industry including Music Feeds, The Music Network, Acid Stag and triple j’s Dave Ruby Howe noting the “silky vocal that goes over the top of a dark and deep production. That’s a winning combo in my books.” LEER continue to demonstrate their strength in production prowess as their discography grows. Having already released an official remix of Crooked Colours’s hit single ‘Light Year (Feat. Masked Wolf)’ as well as playing a coveted support slot for Aussie indie dance legends alongside PRICIE, Annie Bass and Mazy for Great Southern Nights at Metro Theatre in association with Sweat It Out, LEER continue to go from strength to strength. With only a modest handful of tracks to their name so far, LEER’s debut EP, ‘Optimize’, not only provides an insight into the pair’s unique creative landscape but also forecasts a dazzlingly bright future ahead of them.

Yen Strange Releases ‘Bleeding From My Purple Lips’

NEW SINGLE ARRIVES WITH SELF-DIRECTED VISUALISER
SUPPORTING YOURS TRULY NATIONALLY IN DECEMBER

Liberation Records are today excited to share ‘Bleeding From My Purple Lips’, the latest single from Sydney-based artist Yen Strange. Following on from singles ‘Clueless in Suburbia’ and ‘Easy Way Out’, the latest single is accompanied by an alluring self-directed visualiser.

‘Bleeding From My Purple Lips’ is quintessentially Yen Strange – Brimming with grunge fuelled rhythms, reverbed guitar and bittersweet lyricism, Yen, alongside co-writer Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, PNAU, Meg Mac, merci, mercy, G Flip), reflect in hindsight on a toxic relationship, crescendoing into an anthemic indie hit.

On the single, Yen details, ‘Stitches are in my mouth sometimes when I really like someone but they do things that are pretty bad for me. Something stops me from standing up for myself and walking away. I was feeling extremely insane over a situation with someone when I wrote this. Like I was not myself at all and I’d do anything for this person to give me attention’.

The vintage, camcorder style visualiser, directed and edited by Yen Strange, further highlights the single’s vulnerable and intimate depiction, mixing up close and personal footage with candid frames from film negatives.

With a string of popular singles to her name including debut ‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Go Away’ and a cover of Mallrat’s ‘Intro’, the Moruya-born, now Sydney-based singer-songwriter has won press support from the likes of Paper Magazine, Nylon, Ladygunn, The Forty-Five and NME. Her songs have received a huge 20 spins from BBC Radio 1 (with host Jack Saunders a big champion of her work), plus airplay across triple j, triple j Unearthed and community stations like FBi and Radio Adelaide. At DSPs, they’ve appeared on a range of playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Front Left, Indie Pop, SALT and Pop n Fresh, and Apple Music’s New Music Daily, New In Pop, New In Alternative and Pop Chill. When The Horn Blows’ also highlighted Yen Strange on their ‘Ones To Watch’ list for 2022. The past year has seen Yen Strange play to thousands of people, completing support shows with Eliza & The Delusionals, merci, mercy and Hallie and about to embark on a 12-date national tour with ARIA winning pop-punk band, Yours Truly.
ABOUT YEN STRANGE

Growing up in small towns was a blessing and a curse for Yen. In an attempt to distance herself from cliques at school – where she struggled to fit in – she’d seek solace in the music room on her lunch breaks. She had fostered a serious interest in music from the age of seven, studying piano and honing her vocal skills by singing along to songs on the radio in her dad’s car. (Singing lessons didn’t work out; she didn’t want to sing the ‘proper way’.)

At the age of 16, Yen moved from her hometown of Moruya to the larger Wollongong and started playing in local bands, but found her walls crashing down as the aspirations of her bandmates never quite seemed to sync up to her own.  She began to hit roadblocks and experience spirals and depressive episodes, eventually hitting rock bottom and having a breakdown. Despite the hurdles though, Yen persisted and started to pen tracks that she could be proud of, on her own. She now lives in Sydney.

Bag Raiders today drop their latest release in a stream of new music, the shuffling ‘Letting Go‘. LISTEN HERE.

Shifting their impulses from shuffling, warped sample-led percussion as on their previously released ‘UR Heart’ and ‘Never Forget’, Bag Raider‘s latest release ‘Letting Go‘ is a pensive, fast-paced mantra. In this latest era, Chris and Jack‘s music is dedicated to the emotional ties of club spaces and dancefloors, serving today a single devoid of indulgent hubris, but instead, presenting a vessel and means for release.

Of their latest release, Jack shares, “This tune is about body feel, freeing the mind and submitting. On the dancefloor, in life, whenever. We can all use a bit of letting go.” Chris elaborates, “Letting Go is about liberation, sometimes we don’t allow ourselves to live the full potential of our experiences because we’re holding on to expectations or insecurities or other baggage that brings us down, and one of the best places to drop all of that is on the dancefloor.”

Following the success of their 2019 sophomore LP Horizons, Bag Raiders‘ recent stream of releases arrived in the wake of their newly minted label Broken Head Records, both of which accumulated international praise from BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Sarah Story, KISS FM UK’s Sam Divine, Ben Malone and TCTS, Apple Music 1 and triple j with the coveted Friday Mix.

Wider praise arrived from the likes of DJ Mag, EARMILK, Pilerats, EDM.com, and Stoney Roads, with a stack of streaming playlists including the Monster Dance cover and global DJ support from TOKiMONSTA, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, A-Trak, Fouk, Adana Twins, Dom Dolla, John Digweed, Eelke Kleijn and Oliver Heldens.

The project of Jack Glass and Chris Stracey, not many artists have had an immense effect on the youth of today quite like Bag Raiders. Whether that be sound-tracking many a sweaty night on a dancefloor, sing-a-longs at some of the biggest festivals in the world, or even becoming the anthem to one of the most iconic moments in the internet’s history, the electronic duo have done it all; and are ready for more.

Their place as stalwarts in the dance community for over a decade comes after releasing a slew of cult-favourite singles and signing to dance-powerhouse Modular Records, which saw the duo release their debut self-titled record in 2011. The record debuted at #7 on the ARIA Charts and snagged them a ‘Best Dance Release‘ nomination at that year’s ARIA Awards. A part of that record was the single ‘Shooting Stars‘ which has amassed over 4 billion streams online, clocked over 32 Platinum or Gold plaques worldwide and had a cultural impact beyond anyone’s expectations. Now their eyes are firmly set on the future.

‘Letting Go‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Interview: Late November

by the partae October 28, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
We are based up in Townsville, North Queensland

How did Late November form?
We were all mates that were playing in the High School Jazz Band together, then we caught up outside of that to have a play, and the rest is history!

What’s been happening recently?
We’ve been super stoked with the reception on our newest track ‘Fishook’, and we are gearing up for the next few releases!

What or influenced the sound and songwriting on your latest single ‘Fishook’?
Retrospectively we’d say that it’s very Last Dinosaurs inspired, we didn’t really set out to write a song that took elements from anything, but we think we must have been really enjoying their sound and arrangement. As for the production, there is a bit of Bluejuice in some of the harmony lines, very Broken Leg-esque in parts of the song.

How did Fishook come about?
Alex, Aden, Denzel and Sam were all piled into Kodie’s car (a fresh p-plater at the time), and Alex had his guitar half out the window. ‘I’ve got something to show you boys’ he said, and by the time he was up to the second verse we were all sold on it.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
We originally recorded with Mark Myers up in Cairns, but we’d developed the song so much since that session that what we’d recorded there didn’t feel relevant to us anymore. We then re-recorded most of it in the Aitkenvale Library in Townsville, then sent the fresh stems off to Mason Rowley (Oh Forest Shore, Arches) to mix, then to Hayden Dunlop (Chelsea Drive) to master.

What do all of the 7 members do in the band?
We’ve got a jazz band in the making:
Alex Thomas (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar)
Aden Rock (Tenor Saxophone)
Kodie Redfern (Bass)
Samuela Naborisi (Drums)
Denzel Carlos (Lead Guitar)
Anthony Minehan (Alto Saxophone)
Kristopher Gounaris (Trumpet)

Outside of the instruments, Alex and Kodie do most of the writing for the core structure of the song, and Kodie is a member/manager of sorts, organising the branding, merchandise, and other logistics. Sam is a talented producer, and he makes the interludes we use for our live sets.

Please tell us about your upcoming Australian tour and possible dates for Japan:
We are itching for both of these! We are aiming to do between 7-10 shows mostly between Tokyo and Osaka in around March, and then we’ve got an Australian tour in our sights for late 2023, and we’re hoping to hit Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville (of course) and Wollongong. We’re still ironing out logistics and costs for the Aus tour, but at this stage it’s looking promising!

How does being based in Townsville, QLD influence your music?
Townsville has fostered its fair share of original artists, and the music scene has been quite collaborative in nature. We feel that we wouldn’t have the sound we do now, if it wasn’t for seeing these local artists and being inspired. That inspiration naturally makes you look at what they’re doing in their music, and a little bit of that is bound to rub off on you.
To name a few super influential locals:
Colie
Sam Wright
Oh Forest Shore
The Broadcast Fiasco
Hidden Pillars
The Funny Jims
Chelsea Drive
Dogtooth
Lost for Ideas

Please tell us about the importance of the community and being a part of the growing Townsville community:
Watching bands like The Broadcast Fiasco (formerly Solarpets) play in Townsville at the Rec Room was formative for me (Kodie). As a teenager that was learning how to play guitar, this kind of thing struck a chord in me, and I knew instantly that I wanted to do what they were doing. Without these shows, I might never have experienced that feeling. Or I might have experienced it later in life when starting a band seemed too foreign a concept. Without this community and culture in Townsville, we will be missing out on generations of artists that haven’t had that ‘Aha!’ moment, and that’d be a real shame. Multiple people from Brisbane have said to us ‘there must be something in the water in Townsville’ and we think that’s just the community and culture raising well rounded, and collaborative artists.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Our top 5 at the moment are:
Sunbleached
Bryce Bishop
Pinegrove
Fontaines D.C.
Turnstile

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We’ve got an AirBnB booked in Lucinda for the first week of November, and we are all going to get together and make as much as we can. We’ve got so much in the pipeline, and we can’t wait to share it all!

written by the partae
Where are you based at the moment?

Ally aka Almere, The Netherlands

What music have you listened to today?

Stellar Drifting by George Fitzgerald. It’s a great album. And a lot of afrobeats like Burna Boy – Plenty and 1da Banton – No Wahala.

Your new release ‘Amora’ features Tom Zeta. Did you enjoy working together?

I did. He invited me into his studio in Utrecht at the time after sliding into his DM, because I’m a big fan of his sound. He offered me some coffee and krentenbollen, I was sold.

What was your workflow?

For ‘Bravoure’ we started jamming a bit. We both found out our productions are always very rhythm based. He is a skilled drummer and a intuitive producer so he started recording some hihats and home-brew shakers. I started looking for a bass rhythm that was slightly off the grid. We talked a bit about our mutual love for G Funk and started looking for synths to see if we could mix these genres together.

‘Amora’ started by this melodic break he played me. I had some ideas for the structure and the drop and we started to jam. He had a Poly Brute so I was playing around with it and laid down the bass and some synth plucks for the drop. It all happened quite fast as we only needed 3 sessions to complete the ideas for both tracks.

We went a bit back and forth on Whatsapp and finished the tracks quite fast.

What is your favourite piece of equipment?

The Specular Tempus. It’s a pedal effect that combines delay / reverb / granular effects. I’ve routed it to my Juno 106 which create this atmosphere that always seems to hit the spot.

What is your favourite track from this EP?

I had coffee with Tom yesterday where we found out we both have a different fav. He is all about Bravoure where I always like to play Amora just a little bit more.

How was your Summer?

I had a love / hate relationship with my studio as my airconditioning broke down. And I had some great gigs in The Netherlands, London and Istanbul.

Got any exciting gigs coming up this autumn?

Yes I’m heading to Sao Paulo in December where I get to play at Laroc. And I’m the support act of Bob Moses’s show at Melkweg, Amsterdam.

What DJ’s are you really digging right now?

Black Circle and Martin Waslewski.

What have you got planned for 2023?

I’m actually planning to work on an album.

CANADIAN COUNTRY SONGSTRESS JUSTINE BLANCHET EXAMINES EMOTIONALLY UNAVAILABLE ROMANTIC CONQUESTS WITH “HARD TO LOVE” MUSIC VIDEO

by the partae October 27, 2022
written by the partae

Montreal, Quebec, Canada, October 26th, 2022 – Canadian country artist Justine Blanchet is celebrating the official music video for her current single, “Hard to Love”, which has garnered over 140k views on YouTube since its release in September.

“Hard to Love” – Official Music Video: youtube.com/watch?v=5rgqf1HE_98

“Hard to Love” is the first collaboration between Blanchet and hitmaking Nashville producer Danick Dupelle (Emerson Drive, Tebey, Tyler Joe Miller, Matt Lang). Written by a trio of first-rate country songwriters – Courtney Cole, Derrick Southerland, and Kelly Archer, “Hard to Love” offers an inviting country flavour with flourishes of modern pop in its honest examination of love that feels just out of reach.

In speaking about the video, Blanchet says, “To capture the message of this song, we wanted to dive into the dynamics of relationships with emotionally unavailable partners. Our central symbol is a poker game that shows how true intentions and feelings can remain hidden, even from people we think we know and want to love.”

“Hard to Love” is the latest highlight for the Montreal native, who regularly releases her music in English and French. With eight previous singles – including 2019’s “Strong” (over 175K streams on Spotify) and 2021’s “Get Out of the Mud” (#4 on CBC Country/Sirius XM) – and live show highlights like the Festival Country Lotbinière, the Gatlingburg Songwriter’s Festival, Big Valley Jamboree, the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and a pair of Diamonds in the Rough showcases during Canadian Country Music Week, Blanchet is poised for the next wave of her rising and uniquely cultured country music adventure.

As Blanchet divides her time between Canada and Nashville, “Hard to Love” represents the best of both worlds. Blanchette recorded the vocals in Canada, while the song was produced in Music City (a first for her), as was the music video. “Hard to Love” also serves as the first release from her debut EP, set for release in 2023. Between now and then, she wants audiences to not be too hard on themselves when they encounter someone who is hard to love.

She says, “I want listeners to remember that no matter how much you love someone, you cannot make them love you back. But that’s okay. You shouldn’t have to. It’s better to know your worth and find someone who recognizes that. Your patience will be rewarded with love that is honest and more fulfilling.”

Justine Blanchet is currently in Nashville working to complete her EP.

The “Hard to Love” music video is currently available on YouTube.
