Femme-Punk Rockers DOWNGIRL Unleash Cathartic Single ‘Manic’

by the partae September 30, 2022
written by the partae
“The 90s references work, but DOWNGIRL work harder. They make this one sizzle.”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Beauty Queen’]

“Massive riffs and destroy-everything vocals make for grungy goodness. I really like how this explodes after 2 min mark. Keen to hear more.”
4 / 5 (Ryan Egan, Triple J) [About ‘Beauty Queen’]

‘Beauty Queen’ music video played on MTV

“‘Twas the night before Mardi Gras and all through the house, not a creature was stirring… until the first notes of Downgirl, when every living thing within earshot woke the fuck up and wondered, reasonably, whether the world was ending. A fearsome set, where everything is inside out, an impossible puzzle of things that don’t make sense but just do. It’s like enjoying getting a hammer to back of the head. What utter fun.”
(The Underground Stage)

“Downgirl tore it up like a wrecking machine made of the Runaways and Bikini Kill”
(Brian Giffin – Loud Mag)

Explosive and energetic femme nu punk / grunge-rockers DOWNGIRL have doused stages around their hometown in Gadigal land in their highly flammable sonic kerosene and are kicking things up a notch with the release of their track, ‘Manic’, out on September 30.

Born out of the ashes of punk outfit BOYSCLUB, DOWNGIRL formed online during the 2021 lockdown and are gaining plenty of momentum. Within the space of a year, they’ve supported FANGZ and Battlesnake, cutting their teeth on lineups for Doomed Friday, Bonez Queer Party, Winter Magic Revival Festival headlined by Hermitude, Haiku Hands and Urthboy, and are set to tear it up at Chopped Festival with Amyl And The Sniffers later this year. The four-piece also just played with one half of The Veronicas for Jessie333’s new music video for ‘Seeing Stars’.

Bursting onto the scene with the dynamite ‘Beauty Queen’, this epic second track, ‘Manic’, off the group’s upcoming EP is 4 and a half minutes of powerful punk goodness.

The gradual build of gritty riffs and fury-driven drums match the energy of the lyrical confessions that escalate with a fight or flight intensity. By the time it gets there, it fervently begs for relief with a euphoric, wall-to-wall noise-filled chorus and its refrain, ‘Manic’. The song hits like shots of cinnamon whisky – hard, fast and to dizzying effect, with a sweet but spicy aftertaste. Each member gives it their all, and collectively let go like an unrelenting force of nature.

The enthralling track begs your worst enemy, ‘Do I have to keep reminding you I’m not too much for you?’.

DOWNGIRL on the track’s origin:

“‘Manic’ was written during Sydney’s last pandemic lockdown as a back and forth via the WWW. It explores mental health issues and the responsibility we must take for them during a time which is insular and introspective.”

Filmed and directed by Stackhat, the music video for ‘Manic’ reflects a distorted reality with scenes of the band members at home, but flipped upside down. Things progressively get weirder. One band member draws a widening circle of smudged pink lipstick in repeated motions while forcing an unconvincing smile. Another beats drumsticks against a box of Froot Loops, while a third screams into the bathroom toilet.

It’s disorienting and uncomfortable to watch, much like experiencing the timewarp of lockdown and getting caught in the mental battlefield of too much time spent alone. The mania-fuelled chorus is emphasised with DOWNGIRL piling into the car for a head-banging / scream-along drive down a tree-lined road.

DOWNGIRL have gained fans at Hysteria Mag, Heavy Mag, LOUD Mag, Triple J and The Underground Stage, 2SER, FBi Radio, and are taking their femme-punk grunge glory to the top with a single tour kicking off in October.

Get caught up in the addictive headbanging goodness of ‘Manic’ by DOWNGIRL when it’s unleashed – single & music video out on September 30. Witness it in the flesh on these dates:

‘Manic’ Tour
October 16 –
 Soda Factory, Sydney
November 12 – The Lass, Newcastle
November 19 – Cherry Bar, Melbourne

Yung Singh debuts in Australia & New Zealand

by the partae September 30, 2022
written by the partae

With headline shows in Christchurch, Auckland, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth

TICKETS HERE
Astral People proudly presents… Yung Singh

One of the most exciting breakout stories in club culture today. In little over a year Yung Singh has risen to become a must-see draw, headlining virtually every notable club and festival across the European continent. Now finally it’s Australia & New Zealand’s turn. Brace yourselves for a figurehead of the new era as he makes his debut this November!

Combine DJ Mag’s ‘one to watch’ status with the most talked about mix in the UKG revival and you have a breakout 2021 for the phenomenon. An ode to a pivotal underground scene past and present, his Punjabi Garage mix for Shuffle ‘N’ Swing may have put him on the map – but pigeonhole the multifarious selector at your peril. Singh’s sets can vary in style from Garage, UK funky to grime, jungle and dnb mixed with Punjabi folk, to nostalgic trance or hip-hop, and everything in between. He’s curated a string of viral moments, from an era-defining Boiler Room set to a spontaneous collaboration with singer Raf Saperra at Fabric that now sits in UK club folklore. Rapidly he has cemented his status as a dance music original with all the proof to back it up.

At the forefront of a thriving new scene for the South Asian Diaspora, raising awareness of this grassroots community and its history within British dance music is central to him as an artist. Leading by example, he strives to counter racism and cultural erasure and is not afraid to challenge the corners he disagrees with. It’s these morals ingrained from within that come through as a voice for positive change in both dance music as a rising DJ, and in wider society as a trainee doctor.

A true trail-blazer at a time when club music can often feel oversaturated with the same trends. A force for progress. We are giddy with excitement bringing Yung Singh to Australian and New Zealand shores for a very special run of dates.

Astral People acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia on which this tour takes place. Astral People acknowledge their Elders past, present and emerging and pay their respect to all First Nations people. Always Was, Always Will Be.

Sudden Debt – Melbourne Show Tonight!

by the partae September 29, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

Melbourne.

How did Sudden Debt form?

I wanted to start a new band that used minimal instrumentation. So I went through my messenger contacts cold calling acquaintances until we had 3 members.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve released three songs in 2022 which can be streamed on Spotify, Bandcamp, etc.

Your latest single ‘No Data’ is out on October 1st, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The structure of the band is the biggest influence on the songwriting. We’ve decided to limit what gear we use and the songs have developed in that context. We’re trying to focus on simplicity and portability.

What does this single mean to you?

It means I’m still playing music post COVID / post mid 20s. It reminds me that I’m privileged to write music and play live in 2022.

No Data is the third single of a series of three singles, following DD and IIHLL, how would you describe your sound?

Bleak pop.

Please tell us about the song writing development of your singles:

We limit practice to a couple of hours a fortnight. We start with drum and bass. I record that on my phone and write the vocal and guitar at home. I bring it back to the band. We repeat the process, cutting material that doesn’t come together quickly.

You are playing on September 29 ay Nighthawks with Techno Biddes & Orbits, what can we expect?

We’re going to try and play on time because we’re playing on a Thursday night.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The Rough Skies Records back catalogue which includes The Native Cats, All the Weathers, Slag Queens, Mount Trout, Dolphin, Cured Pink and 208L Containers.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We’re going to try and write and record some more music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Pho / Sunshine West.

Fran

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I am based in Boorloo (Perth) Western Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I made a decision about 5 years ago that if I didn’t pursue my dreams now that they would never happen. I found a DJ and Abelton production course through Lab Six and haven’t looked back since.

What’s been happening recently?

I have been quietly producing music in my little home studio which has been like a cocoon during the pandemic. Being nominated for a WAM SOTY award in 2021 really encouraged me to push myself forward and see how far I can go with my beautiful obsession to produce music. I am looking forward to my first live performance (previously it has always been DJ sets).

Your latest single ‘Threw It All Away’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

About a year ago, I really started vibing Trip Hop like Portishead and Massive Attack and decided that genre really suits my songwriting style. I also love Kanye style vocal processing so I decided to give Trip Hop a modern twist by incorporating that into this track.

How did you go about writing Threw It All Away?

I wrote the lyrics first with a melody in mind. Once I had that together, I sat at my piano and worked out some backing chords before picking the perfect synth for the track using Abelton which is the DAW that I use to create music. Once I had a rough draft of the song, I showed my mentor Morgan Then (from Slumberjack) and he had some great suggestions which really brought the track to life and complemented the song so well.

What does this single mean to you?

I feel personally connected to this song. You can hear that this song comes from the heart when listening to my vocals. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to create this song, and it is my intention that it will resonate with a lot of people, and bring them pleasure listening to it.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

The song was written in my studio at home and the vocals were recorded there also. There was some Mentorship over zoom with Morgan Then, but it was all in my home studio. Even the mastering. Lab Six Records requested some minor changes and I was stoked that they released it under their label.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I love Portishead, but I am currently listening to Project Bexx, Tina Says, Ekko and Sidetrack, Boston Switch, Oddly Godly and of course Slumberjack.

What do you like to do away from music?

I am trying to grow the world’s largest tomato.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I am currently involved in a guiness book of world record attempt to beat the record for B2B DJ set and my latest single “Fly Away” is coming out October 13!

I have so much music lined up for release as well as DJ sets and performances scheduled, next up on October 12 at Lyric Underground in Maylands.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love Mushroom Burgers and to hang out at Lab Six.

Million

by the partae September 29, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
Melbourne, VIC.

How did Million form?
The three of us have known each other for years, and collaborated on various projects since meeting back at university almost a decade ago. In June 2020, we connected over our shared love of pop music, and decided to book a rehearsal studio for the day to see what happened. We quickly found that writing together was a lot of fun and felt very natural, so we decided to start the project that has now become ‘million’.

What’s been happening recently?
We’ve been very focused on releasing these singles out into the world! While the tracks came out on September 16th, we premiered them on InnerFM the Monday prior, and launched the tracks live at The Gasometer the following Friday. It was our first headline show and we were absolutely stoked with how it all turned out.

Your latest singles ‘Bed / He Looks Better On Me’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Whenever we’re writing songs, we really like to think about it as storytelling. We’d already written quite a few songs about love and relationships, however we wanted to approach the subject matter from different perspectives and explore new narratives. Both of these songs are inspired by personal experiences, and we like to think that the key theme tying them together is empowerment. In terms of the sounds, we experimented with a lot of new textures and instruments, and some of our influences included Lily Allen, The 1975, Massive Attack and Billie Eilish.

How did you go about writing these singles?
‘Bed’ was a lot of fun to write. A lot of our catalogue was on the darker, moodier side, so we decided we wanted to produce something completely different. Something upbeat and fun! “He Looks Better on Me” was one of the first songs we ever wrote, however it sat on the back burner for almost two years. We came back to it earlier this year, and while we were really happy with the structure of the song, the production has almost changed entirely.

Where are when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
We finished tracking/mixing both tracks earlier this year at Saturn Street Studios and collaborated with sound engineer Luke Mullan for the masters around July.

How did you approach the recording process?
We tend to have the song pretty much ready in demo form, record vocals, and then track any of the instruments needed.

Please tell us about any upcoming shows:
We’re not quite ready to announce yet but…. Fitzroy, keep your eyes peeled.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
We’re all big fans of Holly Humberstone, Lennon Stella, Haim, Carly Rae Jepsen. Female pop acts who write great hooks and have such distinct styles. Very much looking forward to Taylor’s new album too!

What do you like to do away from music?
Run, read and eat sandwiches.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
Lots of writing, rehearsing, recording – with the hopes of an EP mid next year. Watch this space!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Big fans of The Royston in Richmond, can’t go past their schnitties.

Steve Lacy returns to Australia for headline East Coast run this November & December

by the partae September 29, 2022
written by the partae

Steve Lacy brings his Give You The World Tour to Australia this November and December, playing headline East Coast dates
Also appearing at Spilt Milk in Canberra, Ballarat and the Gold Coast
Critically acclaimed new album Gemini Rights is out now through RCA Records/Sony Music Australia

Penny Drop and Frontier Touring are delighted to announce Steve Lacy will return to Australia this November and December for headline East Coast dates, along with appearances at Spilt Milk in Canberra, Ballarat and the Gold Coast.

Visiting our shores for the first time since his sold-out headline run in early-2020, Steve Lacy will take in the Forum Melbourne on 22 November, Brisbane’s The Tivoli on 23 November and Sydney’s stunning Enmore Theatre on 28 November.

Lacy’s Australian visit follows the release of his critically acclaimed new album Gemini Rights, which he dropped in July. Written, produced, and played pretty much entirely by Steve, the record is an incredible leap forward for an artist who has already established himself as a true cultural force. Like Lacy himself, the record is an amalgamation of a crazy array of references and influences – everything from Caetono Veloso, to Andre 3000’s The Love Below, to the Beatles, to Sly Stone, to his friends/band mates in THE INTERNET and much more.

Earlier this month, album single ‘Bad Habit’ became the first song to simultaneously top both Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Chart and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs Chart. That same week the song cracked the Top 10 on America’s Pop Airplay Chart and hit No.2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart, becoming Lacy’s first ever single to reach the chart. In Australia, the track topped Spotify’s Top 50 Chart and peaked at No.3 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

With a live show that is equally celebrated, Steve Lacy has earnt praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME and Rolling Stone, who called Gemini Rights “brilliantly mercurial”.

“… silky-but-powerful vocals” – DIY Mag

“… Lacy well and truly delivered.” – Mixdown Mag

“This singular talent goes to the next level with his deliciously languid second solo album” – The Guardian

Lacy already has a veteran’s resume: Wired Magazine Tech Visionary, Time Magazine Most Influential Teen, Grammy-nominated for his debut album, Apollo XXI, multiple world tours, walked for Virgil Abloh’s first Louis Vuitton show in Paris, gave a TED Talk in NYC, produced a track on Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN (‘Pride’) on his iPhone. His list of collaborators is a who’s who of game changing artists, all of whom look to Lacy to bring his signature brand of cool to their sonic table: people like Tyler the Creator, Solange, J.Cole, Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors, Kali Uchis, Thundercat and Mac Miller, not to mention his guitar, bass, songwriting, and production with his bandmates THE INTERNET. His song ‘Dark Red’, which he literally made on his iPhone, claimed platinum status in the US recently!

Following his US tour dates this Spring, Steve Lacy will return down under in November and December and it’s a music experience that is absolutely not to be missed.

Paul Kelly’s ‘Making Gravy’ concert returns this December

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

The festive concert returns this December with special guests Amyl and the Sniffers, The Beths (NZ) and Alex The Astronaut

  • Paul Kelly announces his annual Making Gravy concert, taking place Friday 9 December at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl
  • Kelly is a 17 x ARIA Award winner and has been nominated 61 times – the most nominated Australian artist in ARIA history
  • Tickets on sale Wednesday 5 October

Who’s gonna make the gravy with Paul Kelly this year? Back by popular demand and now in its fourth incarnation, Kelly’s annual Making Gravy concert returns to Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday 9 December. Kick off the festive season with a night celebrating songs from Kelly’s four decade-long, critically acclaimed career… including, of course, his 1996 classic ‘How To Make Gravy’, a song five minutes long, with no chorus, and set in jail.

For 2022’s musical feast Kelly will be joined on stage by three of Australia and New Zealand’s finest musical exports: Melbourne outfit Amyl and the Sniffers, Auckland four-piece The Beths, and Sydney singer/songwriter Alex The Astronaut.

Frontier Members can access the pre-sale from Monday 3 October (1pm local time), before tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday 5 October (1pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/makinggravy. Secure your tickets early to avoid missing out!

One of Australia’s most revered musicians, Paul Kelly holds the prestigious title of an Officer of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to the arts. Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997, Kelly is a 17 x ARIA Award winner and has been nominated 61 times during his illustrious career, making him the most nominated Australian artist in ARIA history. Renowned as one of our greatest performers and songwriters, Kelly’s willingness to take the road less travelled has played an important part in keeping the flame burning in his own songs, tracks that have soundtracked a nation: ‘From St Kilda to King’s Cross’, ‘Leaps and Bounds’, ‘To Her Door’, ‘Before Too Long’, ‘The Ballad of Queenie and Rover’, ‘They Thought I Was Asleep’, ‘Deeper Water’, the unforgettable Kev Carmody co-write ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’… and countless more.

With the 21st of December now unofficially known as ‘Gravy Day’, ever since Kelly first debuted his first Making Gravy concert series way back in 2017 fans have been witness to a truly special night. Alongside his many hits and special guests, Kelly also performs a few of his favourite Christmas odes… several of which he captured in 2021’s extraordinary 22-song double collection Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train. From folk, classical, soul, carols, hymns, rock and roll, don’t miss this special, one-off live event!

Making Gravy 2021 – Photo by Mushroom Creative House

Twelve months ago, their album Comfort To Me propelled them into the stratosphere and now Melbourne punkers Amyl and the Sniffers return to the Bowl for Making Gravy! The band sold out venues across the globe in 2022, from legendary stages such as the Brixton Academy (UK) to festivals Coachella, Primavera, and more. In early September, Amyl… dropped Live at Forum Theatre on YouTube – watch the blistering clip here. Currently on the road in North America, the ‘Hertz’ rockers return to Europe this month before wrapping up a huge year of gigs with a show in Glasgow. Melbourne: it’s time to welcome Amyl and the Sniffers home.

Auckland four-piece The Beths are riding high on the recent release of their third and best album to date, Expert In A Dying Field, which debuted at #1 in New Zealand this week. Elizabeth Stokes (vocals/guitar), Jonathan Pearce (guitar), Benjamin Sinclair (bass), and Tristan Deck (drums) imbue singles such as the ear worm ‘Knees Deep’ with brimming, electric confidence – think cerebral indie-rock-meets-power pop. Praised by international outlets such as NME, Paste, Stereogum (who named Expert… Album of the Week) and more, The Beths “fully deserve every accolade they will no doubt receive with this album”, reckons Bandcamp, in their glowing 9/10 album review.

Sydney 26-year-old Alex The Astronaut will open proceedings on the night, charming audiences with her trademark lyrics, idiosyncratic humour, and radiantly detailed slices of life. 2022 album How to Grow A Sunflower Underwater debuted at #4 on ARIA’s Australian Album chart, Alex documenting moments of both the seemingly mundane – from a haircut, a therapy session, a trip to the beach and to the supermarket – to the utterly life-changing. In between performing sold-out headline shows across Australia in 2022 Alex has graced festival stages including Primavera Sound, The Great Escape, and Splendour in the Grass… where she performed her latest single, ‘Ride My Bike’.

Making Gravy has become an unmissable live music experience on Melbourne’s calendar. Christmas has come early with this unbeatable line-up: grab your tickets and don’t miss out!

NOFX dropped Single Album last February, and now the second half of the double album, appropriately titled Double Album, will be released on December 2nd. It boasts ten songs and is available for pre-order now. Plus, because we’re not monsters, you can hear the first single, “Darby Crashing Your Party,” on any digital service provider.

LISTEN TO “DARBY CRASHING YOUR PARTY”

PRE-ORDER DOUBLE ALBUM

What better way to celebrate an album release than a tour. NOFX will be in Australia as part of Good Things Festival kicking off on December 2 this year (album release day). Full details below.

At this point in your career, why do a double album?

“I wish I knew,” the fat one offers, almost confounded why anyone would ever ask him that question in the first place. “OK. I mean, we have a lot of records. I’m not sure how many, let’s call it 15 with 10 more EPs and 65 7″s. I wanted to do a double album cuz there are no good ones out there. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is about it. Quadrophenia is OK, I guess, if you’re a Who fan. Definitely not [The Beatles’] White Album. I don’t think anybody else has made good double albums. Certainly not Husker Du, Minutemen, or Smashing Pumpkins.

“I really like Single Album a lot, but the songs on Double Album aren’t quite up to scratch. All these songs were recorded at the same time, except this one was finished two years later. I think it’s a very enjoyable album, and maybe our funniest. I think it is what a lot of our fans will want to hear and it’s a great side three and four for a double album. I accomplished my goal of making a solid double-album, but it just took a lot longer than I expected.”

Reuniting with punk-rock legends Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore for producer/engineering duties, it’s not hyperbolic to say NOFX are making their best music now. But that’s not to imply everything else they’ve done was crap, either. But Double Album reminds both ardent fans and casual listeners that NOFX weren’t born to follow trends. Indeed NOFX—Fat Mike, guitarists Eric Melvin and El Hefe, and drummer “Smelly” Eric Sandin—have carved their logo into the veneer of punk-rock culture for decades. With nearly 40 years in this circus, you’ll meet people and do/see/conspire to get all the wildest shit done. Remember how one of the stipulations of the NOFX book Hepatitis Bathtub was that none of the band members could see what the other ones were writing about them? Well, this time, Mike got permission to blow up the foibles and peccadillos of people in song for maximum velocity and hilarity.

There’s “Joanna Constant Teen,” a 78-second tribute to the dominatrix that spent six weeks in Mike’s NYC-based Airbnb during the production run of his musical, Home Street Home. (“She just moved in and played with me every night. She’d be like, ‘Mike; it’s time to write another song. Get started, or you know what will happen!’ That was really cool. Obviously, I didn’t write that much.”) “Alcopollack” is about booking agent David Pollock, who has worked with the band for over 30 years and has lost more than his fair share of clients for his too-brazen honesty. (“I asked him if it was OK if we put this on the album, and he’s like, ‘Yeah sure, it’s mean but funny.'”) “Fuck Day Six” is a story detailing the time Mike cleaned out (pun sorta intended) in a rehab run by Buddhists, with plenty of name (and deuce) dropping. (“Anybody who has gotten off of opiates knows what ‘day six’ means.”) “Is It Too Soon If Time Is Relative” is a hilarious ‘n’ cruel takedown of the acclaimed author/physicist Stephen Hawking. (“I wrote that before he died,” is Mike’s mea culpa. “It’s not quite as funny anymore. I wanted him to hear it.”)

Naturally, Mike has made a career drilling and riveting the word “self” into “self-deprecation,” and he’s sure as hell not going to stop now. With such future classics as “Darby Crashing Your Party?,” “Punk Rock Cliche,” the song that got dropped off the Blink album California after the band found out that Skiba co-wrote it with Fatty (Although it was their favourite song). Mike also admits that the Blink version of the song was better), and the too-real, too-bittersweet, too-funny tracks “My Favorite Enemy” and “Don’t Count On Me,” he’s still ready to take a cream pie to the face, even if it has broken glass and sharpened nails in it.

“You have to laugh at everything,” Mike reveals, “because the world is just falling apart and you have to have a good attitude not to take things seriously. So this is how I’ve always done it. I make people laugh every day. I usually do it in a self-deprecating way, it’s just how I go through life: I have as much fun as I can. That’s what life is—trying to find all the happiness you can. And spreading happiness. Which is what I feel like is supposed to be my job in life—spreading joy.” The determination to continue making compelling music, keeping the bar high for punk, and doing the best thing for their punk-rock legacy, makes NOFX simply unstoppable. Double Album is filled with moods, tales, and tempos slightly faster than an ice-road trucker backsliding down a hill. What’s their secret? Quite simply, NOFX isn’t half-assing anything.

Mike laughs. “I full-ass everything. Literally.”

Willaris. K Shares ‘Double Demerits/Harsh’ + On Tour

HEADLINE TOUR KICKED OFF IN BRISBANE
SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, PERTH + HOBART STILL TO COME!
Willaris. K’s highly anticipated headline tour has kicked off and to celebrate, Soothsayer are sharing two-track release ‘Double Demerits/Harsh’ – a package that smoothly transitions from rave to sunrise kick-ons.

Beautifully chaotic, ‘Double Demerits’ is a fast-paced piece of melodic techno, featuring a playful lead synth and industrial, laser-like textures. Entirely self-produced, with mixing by Ewan Pearson (Chemical Brothers, MOBY, Depeche Mode), Willaris. K says of the track:

“‘Double Demerits’ is a song I made at the start of the year after playing some summer festivals. It felt so good to be back and this is a reflection of that. It’s about going fast, figuratively.”

‘Harsh’ comes in perfect juxtaposition. Titled with a taste of irony, the melancholic ambient offering is a dreamy sunrise soundtrack; from comedowns to morning meditation, whatever your flavour may be.

“‘Harsh’ is the song I’ve listened to most of all the songs I’ve made in the last two years,” he admits. “A bit of a healing song that I hope does the same for others.”

WATCH: Willaris. K – ‘Double Demerits’ [Official Visualiser]
‘Double Demerits/Harsh’ follows Willaris. K’s recent singles ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Melt’, which collectively saw a triple j premiere, adds to dance and electronic tastemaker playlists across Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music, plus support from Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Stoney Roads and The Music.

This run of recent releases marks a new chapter for Willaris. K. His last complete bodies of work, 2020’s LUSTRE and FULL NOISE EPs, featured remixes from Skin On Skin, Model Man and Boys Noize and were met with praise from BBC Radio 1, triple j, Mixmag, The Guardian UK, and Beats 1, Stereogum, NME and Earmilk, among other global tastemakers.

‘Double Demerits/Harsh’ arrives as Willaris. K continues on his biggest headline tour yet, with anticipated sets at Sydney’s The Roundhouse this Friday, Melbourne’s Forum, Perth’s Freo Social and Hobart’s Altar still to come, following an incredible Brisbane appearance.

‘Double Demerits’ is sure to make a show stopping debut in Willaris. K’s live set, while ‘Harsh’ is the mellow ease into your Uber ride home.

The Temper Trap team up with Budjerah, Ngaiire and Gretta Ray

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae
WATCH: Budjerah, Ngaiire and Gretta Ray’s cover of The Temper Trap’s hit single ‘Sweet Disposition’ recorded for The Sound.
Liberation Records are proud to give an official release to Budjerah, Ngaiire and Gretta Ray’s cover of The Temper Trap’s hit single ‘Sweet Disposition’. Originally recorded for The Sound, the track is an anthemic rendition, highlighting each of the artist’s vocals and swirling into a grandiose chorus. All proceeds from the single will be donated to The Yiriman Project – an Indigenous organisation operating in the Kimberleys that works tirelessly to prevent youth suicide in community. All money raised goes directly into programs devoted to helping Aboriginal youth in the region by taking them ‘back to Country’ in the company of their Elders, where they can begin to reconnect with their culture and strengthen their sense of identity.

The release also coincides with The Temper Trap’s live return, performing the track at the AFL Grand Final over the weekend, joined by Budjerah and Ngaiire for the special performance. The band are also set to support Kings of Leon on their Australian national tour this October.

The Temper Trap: “We’re really happy to see this fantastic cover get an official release and even happier to see all the proceeds going to the Yiriman Project. They do an amazing job working with Indigenous youth and we’re honoured to be aiding their important work.”

Ngaiire: “What a wild way to release this track, off the back of performing at the MCG with The Temper Trap and Budjerah. So happy we get to release this to raise money for The Yiriman Project.”

Gretta Ray: “Getting to sing alongside the Yavusa Choir and the two powerhouse voices of Ngaiire and Budjerah was such an honour. We covered this song as a tribute to Michael Gudinski, which made performing such a timeless, classic Australian song feel all the more special. I love the spectacular venue we filmed this performance in in Sydney, and I love that a year later the cover is having another moment at the AFL Grand Final! I’m so grateful to have been involved in this.”

Budjerah: “I’m so excited for this song to be out! Feels really special.”

Fall Head Over Heels In Love With Indie-Folk Duo McDermott & North’s Nostalgic New Single ‘Elope’

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support for McDermott & North

“this is such feel good 60s tinged pop that backs up the positive spin on bad stuff happening message with a sunny sounding song.”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“After jamming out to ‘All Things Come and Go’ for months, I thought I’d better explore the McD & N back catalogue, and I’m not disappointed! This is gorgeous, and just affirms my love for McDermott & North! These guys are all class.”
(Lachie Pringle, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“Definitely hearing the Kinks influence here. I can’t give higher praise than that. Really lovely classic songwriting: a little bit sunny, a little bit wistful, a joy to have in the ears.”
(Dan Condon, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“Patrick McDermott and Rhys North, have spent the past number of years carving out a sound that feels both grounded and explorative; it’s rooted in an earnest kind of folky warmth, but stretches into spaces of pure melodic ecstasy. Seriously, these guys really know how to write a chorus.”
(Happy Magazine)

“Clearly dedicated to the preservation of the song…”
(Gary Crowley, BBC Radio)

“A slice of gorgeous, blissful pop”
(Mark Rogers, RNZ)

Stream ‘Elope’

Beloved indie folk songwriters McDermott & North are back with their heartfelt sounds, this time with a sweet and sophisticated plea to marry a lover in their new single ‘Elope’. It’s guaranteed to charm from the moment it waltzes through the airwaves on September 28.

The talented songwriting duo have been winning hearts around the East Coast with their busking performances and beautiful songs since 2016, from which time their dedicated fanbase has amassed and only continues to grow. Their charismatic music making has likewise caught the attention of artists Ben Lee and Alex Lloyd, and consequently invited them to support on their separate tours. Stages at Bluesfest, TEDX Talks Brisbane and Bigsound have also showcased the pair in 2019, and they’ve two sold-out headline shows in their hometown – just to name a few.

The innocently earnest ‘Elope’ is sure to once again melt hearts, as Patrick McDermott and Rhys North do so well, with this release being their second for the year after the swaying 60s-inspired tune, ‘All Things Come And Go’.

This considered and carefully-crafted song is set to evoke nostalgic memories of that sweet, innocent feeling of being so hopelessly in love that you’re ready to abandon everything and tie the knot. Weaving through romantic invitations to escape into the sunset, declarations of love and heading down the aisle, ‘Elope’ charms all the way through with beautiful harmonies that glide effortlessly to a climactic final chorus, pirouettes through waves of strings before landing gracefully on an impressive baritone outro.

“Elope” was written during Patrick McDermott’s first real relationship. It’s about vulnerability and innocence of the heart when you’re caught in the throes of love.

McDermott continues,“‘How naive that total infatuation you feel for your first true love is, how you would blindly commit to leaving everyone and everything to be solely with that person. Though the relationship didn’t last, the song stands to represent the concept more than it does the person whom it was written for. It’s something many have experienced at some point and the melody serves to further romanticise those times and feelings.”

McDermott & North have made fans far and wide over the past few years, with media support here at home from Triple J, ABC Breakfast Radio, and globally with National NZ Radio and BBC Radio London / Scotland / Belfast, as well as receiving features from Scenestr, Beat Magazine, Forte Mag, The Music, The Creative Issue, Girl.com.au, MILKY, and many more.

Prepare to get down on one knee and fall in love with McDermott & North’s beautiful new tune ‘Elope’ when it’s unveiled on September 28. McDermott & North will be on tour with their band throughout September and October which includes three acoustic shows supporting Alex Lloyd.

Congratulations on the release of ‘Bittersweet At Best’! How does it feel to have new music out there? Thank you! It’s so exciting! I have been working on this song for a really long time and to finally be able to share it in all it’s melancholic glory is amazing!

It’s not the first piece of music from you in 2022 – how does the experience of making this track compare to ‘I’m Fine, Thanks’? I actually worked on them one after the other. On fine thanks we had a I think about 30 backing vocal tracks to create that waterfall of ‘fine’ and a lot of overlaying lead parts from me. So when we moved onto Bittersweet it felt like a walk in the park because it was so intentionally stripped back.

Tell us about the team you worked with on ‘Bittersweet At Best’: who were they and what was it like to work with them? The same team who worked on ‘I’m Fine, Thanks’ worked on this one, Cody McWaters, Dan Sugars, Kieran Stevenson, Michael Muchow and of course, me! It’s so wonderful to work with them because they are some of the closet people in my life and know me and understand me so well that it just makes for a really safe space to create.

How do you think your songwriting approach has changed since releasing your album Spectacular Heartbreak (if so, how)? I think the only thing that might’ve changed is I trust myself a bit more. I feel like when I was writing SH I would get halfway through a song and it wouldn’t be quite right and I would immediately go to the idea that I needed a co-writer to finish it. Which worked out pretty well on SH of course! But I think for this record I have put a bit more effort into pushing myself to try to be my own editor.

‘Bittersweet At Best’ feels like such an emotional track: do you pull from real life experiences when writing your material? Definintely! Funnily enough this song just kind of fell out and I didn’t actually think much of it when I first wrote it. It wasn’t until I was tracking some demos with Dan and Kieran and I had jumped on at the last minute to do this one by myself. I looked over at them when I had finished and they were both about to cry. So I figured that maybe the reason it was so easy to write because so much of this song feels like it was just sitting in my subconscious. I always feel like the only way I can write something special is writing what I know.

Do you have any specific reference records or artists you find yourself returning to with each writing session? Not so much when I go into writing sessions but certainly when we are working up a song in the studio. I think my cornerstone for incredible writing and experimenting is and will always be Taylor Swift. Her writing has always told stories no matter what genre she is playing in. And that’s something I always hang onto when I’m creating.

What’s coming up with you as we head into the rest of the year, with your music, that is exciting you? Right now I’m finishing up my second album that I crowdfunded earlier this year with the same team I’ve been working with on these last two songs. I’m also playing some of the new record live at festivals like Deni Ute Muster (September 30) and Groundwater Country Music Festival (October 30), I’ll also be doing my annual christmas show which I’ll be annoucing next month! Then gearing up for a big album release and tour next year!

Can fans expect a new album on the horizon? Yes indeed! Album 2 is on the way in 2023!

Sudden Debt Release ‘No Data’, Melbourne Show This Thursday

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

Sudden Debt are a three piece from Melbourne, the band uses noise, tremolo, delay, drum pads, vocal effects and bass chorus to create a unique and experimental sound. Band members include members of Heart Beach (Spunk!, Kingfisher Bluez, Rough Skies) and Ivy St (Wireless).

No Data is the third track of a series of three singles following the recently released DD and IIHLL.

A celebratory show will be held on the 29th of September at Nighthawks (Melbourne) w/ Techno Biddes & Orbits

Quote about ‘No Data’ from Jon from Sudden Debt,

“No data was recorded at Heap Gap in 2022. It’s the third and final 2022 single from Sudden Debt. The three singles were tracked in half a day. Less than an hour for No data. No data is necessarily simple. The simpler the track the higher the likelihood it could be preserved. The vicissitudes of life were corroding our music at the time: work, lockdowns, travel, ageing, cost, procrastination. Calendrical bass, unintelligible vocals (you can’t understand and so are not distracted by the “words”), a stripped back electronic kit that you can plug in quickly and play really loud in a really small room”.
