4 Music-Listening Devices And How To Get The Most Out Of Them

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

There are so many different music-listening devices on the market these days, from earbuds to full-blown surround sound systems. Because there’s so much choice, it can be hard to know which one’s right for you. Do you want a small and portable device that you can take anywhere? Or do you prefer a larger system that will give you better sound quality? In this article, we’ll discuss 4 of the most popular music-listening devices and how to get the most from them.

1. Record Players

Record players were once the most popular way to listen to music. While they’ve been replaced by other devices in recent years, they’re making a comeback. They work by playing vinyl records that have grooves on them -and the needle of the player follows them. This creates a unique (‘more live’) sound that many people prefer over digital (‘more sterile’) music.

Record players require more maintenance than other devices as the needle can get dirty and worn down over time. You’ll also need to buy vinyl records to play on them, which can be expensive (unless you find secondhand ones). Finally, record players aren’t the cheapest option, although the prices are coming down. However, they can provide a unique listening experience that you won’t get with other devices.

Additional Resources

If you’re considering investing in one, check out some of the specialist websites on the internet. The popularity of toprecordplayers.com demonstrates peoples’ desire to find the best record players and reviews, and comparisons of top turntables. Folks want to access buying guides for portable record players, plus floor speakers and headphones for vinyl. You can also discover tips and advice on turntable noise, pitch adjustment, and issues with needles or volume.

2. CD Players

CD players are becoming less common these days, due to the advent of streaming apps like Spotify. They work by playing discs that have music encoded on them. CD players usually come with a built-in amplifier and speakers, making them a great option for people who don’t want to use Bluetooth or wifi. Many modern versions will resume playing where you left off last time.

Make sure you always keep your CDs in good condition as they can become scratched over time. You should also try not to play them too loudly as this can damage the speakers. Finally, consider investing in a CD player with a remote control so you can change the track or volume without having to get up.

3. Bluetooth (Smart) Speakers

Bluetooth speakers are a type of audio speaker that allows you to wirelessly play your music from your phone or other devices. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have many different features, such as the ability to connect multiple devices at once.

Make sure you connect the speaker to a power source and try to keep it in an open space as this will improve the sound quality. Some speakers (such as Sonos) allow you to calibrate the sound EQ according to the room that you’re in. As with CD players, playing your music too loudly can damage the speaker.

4. Headphones And Earbuds

Headphones are a type of audio device that allows you to listen to your music privately. They’re ideal for use around the house (especially the wireless versions) or when jogging. If you want to use them for listening to music while you work, noise-canceling headphones would be a good option. Secondly, make sure you keep them clean by using a soft cloth to wipe them down every once in a while. Thirdly, only play them at a volume that is safe for your ears. Finally, take care of the headphones’ cords by coiling them up properly and keeping them away from heat sources.

Earbuds are a type of headphones that fit inside your ear canal. They’re small and lightweight, making them a good option for people who want to listen to their music on the go. Earbuds come in both wired and wireless varieties, and many come with built-in microphones so you can take calls without having to remove them from your ears. They need looking after in similar ways to standard headphones. If you plan on using them while working out, however, choose earbuds that are designed for use during physical activity.

Hopefully, you’ve learned a little more about these major examples of music-listening devices. By looking after them properly they’ll perform at their best for the longest time possible. You’ll be able to enjoy your music for many years to come, thanks to the wonders of modern technology.

Reckless Coast

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Jaeden: Brisbane, but originally we’re all coastal kids from the Sunny Coast all the way down to Coffs Harbour!

How did you first start playing music?

Jaeden: I started guitar when I was 5. As a teenager I did open mics where I started singing… I got into programs such as T.D.P (Syd) and from those I started playing at conferences through the education department. Travelling up and down the East Coast for those really got me into the life of a professional musician, and it all sort of rolled on from there!

India: I was brought up with music constantly playing around the house and as a toddler my parents would set up pots and pans from the kitchen and create a makeshift drum kit for me with chopsticks as the drum sticks. Then over time I picked up my dad’s acoustic guitar, started lessons and then found a love of bass through playing my grandads old 70’s Fender Jazz and I was hooked!

Jono: I started playing piano when I was 8 and then eventually wanted to learn instruments like guitar and bass when I was a bit older. I only really started playing drums when I was 15.

How did Reckless Coast form?

Jaeden: I started the band when I came to Brisbane with a few mates who only stayed on for a bit… that’s when I met India and we really hit off, just with the same goals and inspirations…

India: I saw Jaeden made an ad looking for a bassist and drummer, the first time I saw it I didn’t respond and thought “if it’s meant to be, I’ll see it again.” A few days later he posted a different ad and I saw it again so responded. We had a jam session just guitar and bass and hit it off instantly.

Jaeden: Our drummer then left to pursue other avenues in Melbourne late 2020, and that’s when Jono jumped on board… I didn’t even know he was a drummer ahahaha, but we were good mates and jammed… turns out he’s a mad man on the skins and so here we are!

Jono: Bit of a long story on how we all became friends to be honest. I have known Jaeden for approx 3-4 years just because I used to do sound for the band for work before I joined. Both myself and Jaeden’s projects would end up on lineups together because of our similar styles. So we saw a lot of each other. Eventually we just caught up for a beer and he mentioned that Vann (the previous drummer) had moved and I was keen to play some drums again and here we are.

What’s been happening recently?

India: We’ve been in the studio with producer Cody McWaters (King Stingray, Selfish Sons, The Chats) recording new songs, getting ready for the tour and workshopping another batch of new tunes that I’m so excited to share in the near future!

Your latest single ‘Do You Want Me’ will be out on April 8, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Jaeden: I was working at a pub at the time, and was very much tired of the same ol nonsense. One shift in particular I was just over it… too much to do, not enough help, even less motivation and I remember thinking of how much I just wanted to do music rather than this job and the thoughts that went through my head during that shift pretty much wrote the song.

Sound wise, the riff came out with a pub rock vibe… which is funny considering the song’s inspiration. I wanted a tune with pumping, energetic ferocity, so the vocals are almost preaching in their delivery. So it didn’t feel like a re-hashed Oz Rock track though, I added a euphoric, almost relieving chorus (plus a few other elements).

What does this track mean to you?

Jaeden: Just a blatant question to life I guess hahaha. For me, it’s for anyone who feels like they’re getting nowhere and are at that point of questioning whether to keep going or what the hell are they doing it for… it’s a song for that moment haha

India: To me this song is special because it ties in our old school rock inspiration but with a modern edge. Lyrically, it makes you think about what you want but in a ‘zero f**ks given’ type of way!

Jono: To me it’s kind of a transition from the old school style of the band to the new stuff we have coming out.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

Jono: As India mentioned before, Cody McWaters recorded and mixed this track. Matthew Gray mastered the track.

How did you approach the recording process?

Jono: Before we hit the studio I threw some demos together and sent them to Cody and he made some notes and we did some pre-production to polish the track off. We tracked the drums at Jeff Lovejoys studio in Moorooka and recorded the rest at Hunting Ground Studios.

India: Our recording process runs so smoothly with Jono and Cody. We also don’t limit ourselves to making changes on the day of recording, giving us more creative freedom in the process.

Any tours coming up?

India: We have an east coast tour coming up, shows ranging from the Sunshine Coast down to Sydney and the Central Coast area, and on our way back north will play Gold Coast and a Brisbane show too!

What do you find most rewarding and challenging whilst being on the road?

Jaeden: The most rewarding thing is meeting people you would’ve never met if you just sat around in the same town… every tour I always get excited about who I might meet, or who I’m gonna see again.

India: I agree, the rewarding part is meeting new people and seeing them light up when you play. Challenging part is probably just the change in sleep schedule. But nothing too bad! I’m always grateful to just tour and take in the highs and the lows. It’s all part of the fun.

Jono: Yeah same. I love meeting new people. I haven’t been to the towns we are going to to play shows so I am excited.

What spots do you like playing and where do you want to play?

India: I loved playing NSW for the Curious Affection tour. They’re super chill but always ready to jam out to rockier music like ours. I would love to play the UK though, I’d happily tour there ASAP.

You’ve changed your band name, why the change?

Jaeden: After we released our last single “TALK” we realised we were a much more refined band. It was a new era for us and we wanted to let people know we were serious about it all… plus the old name Rude Rum didn’t portray us properly musically or as individuals.

We’re three coastal kids who love a good rock show so Reckless Coast was a perfect fit.

What are you looking forward to in this new era as a band?

India: I’m really looking forward to releasing more music that is currently being written and workshopped. As Jaeden said, we’re much more refined now. We know exactly what we like, what we want and we’re more than ready to do it!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jaeden: I’ve been on a mad Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes binge haha hooked on the drive that band puts out… and I’ve also just got into Amyl and the Sniffers too! Just diggin their style of raw energy.

India: Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Hot Milk, and for some reason a lot of early 2000’s rock, and nu-metal? Just revisiting the modern classics!

Jono: Sly Withers, Polaris, Ruby Fields. I also get around local bands like Verum, Ben Tenison, Annoying Neighbours, Patient Lounge, Brixton Alley and Space Flamingo.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jaeden: I love cooking, especially things from scratch like flatbreads, dumplings, burgers… I’m vegetarian too and I love figuring out creative ways to make alternate versions of things

India:  If I’m not playing music I’m doing something creative, whether that’s designing gig posters for artists or promotional assets for other band’s releases. Brain constantly thinking of what I can do next!

Jono: I love basketball and Fishing. My career at the moment is entirely based around music which is awesome. But I try and do other things in my down time.

What’s planned for 2022?

Jaeden: more music, more shows, and just rad things in general… we want to do some extra content that’s a little off the track, but just to have something fun for the fans to engage with.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Jaeden: Currently… dumplings… gawd damn love those things

Recently found a rad secret bar called Cindy Chows which I believe was inspired by Shanghai speakeasy bars of the 1920’s… feels so exclusive.

India: My favourite food will always be anything Italian. I love Cindy Chows too! I much prefer the more hidden and low key hangouts than the hustle and bustle locations nowadays.

Jono: Been loving Italian at the moment as well. Also been loving sashimi for some reason,

TAYLOR B-W RETURNS WITH STRIKING NEW SINGLE ‘IN UR NET’

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

Sydney’s Taylor B-W is back with a new slice of indie/R&B in ‘In Ur Net’, a fresh and vibrant cut from the artist who has been continuing to grow her body of work over the last year and a half.

When it comes to Taylor’s work, listeners are presented with music they can vibe out to in any club or party setting; while also being served lyricism that is personal, relatable, tackling a full spectrum of emotion.

‘In Ur Net’ continues this tradition for Taylor: it’s a song that presents as a crisp fusion of R&B, Reggaeton and contemporary pop music and beneath, there exists songwriting that pulls the listener in a direction marked by depth and impact.

A song about getting lost in obsession and lust for someone who doesn’t deserve it, ‘In Ur Net’ covers feelings of emotional entrapment and the all-encompassing overwhelming feelings that can come with it. For this project, Taylor worked with producer Liam Quinn at Alexandria’s Ralph Street Studios to get ‘In Ur Net’ just right.

“Like most of my songs, ‘In Ur Net’ is a fun, danceable pop song on face-value, however, behind the shininess, I delve into something deeper. This song is my take on how obsession and desire for someone can transform into delusion and mania.

‘In Ur Net’ is for anyone who has experienced an uncontrollable obsession and lust for someone who they know doesn’t deserve them.  It’s like you are stuck in deep water, trying to swim up to the surface, but something keeps sucking you deeper and deeper, giving you tunnel vision.”
TAYLOR B-W

Sonically, ‘In Ur Net’ sees Taylor moving into territory where we can hear the likes of Mabel, Dua Lipa and The Weeknd all coexisting; music made with attitude and no fear of blending genre and time with intensely personal narrative perspectives.

For the music video, Taylor worked with filmographer Desmond Hoo around different areas of Sydney’s inner west including Sydney Park and Newtown.

“I came across Desmond Hoo’s work randomly while flicking through Instagram and I reached out to him to see if he would be interested in collaborating on my music video. I sent him a Pinterest mood board and an extensive YouTube playlist with videos that emulated my vision.

Des had a really fresh take on my initial vision, by delving into the sentiment behind my lyrics.  He wanted to create an intimate ode to the cataclysm that is love, an anthem for those who get caught in love’s web.  With a series of carefully composed frames we feel a claustrophobia between me and my partner – without the camera ever revealing the partner’s face. I’m caught in his orbit, unable to let go.”
TAYLOR B-W

Following on from 2021’s ‘I’m So Broke’ and ‘Nunchucks’, Taylor steps up once again as a strong addition to the current wave of Sydney Pop/R&B voices turning heads.

PRAISE FOR TAYLOR B-W

“Taylor’s delivered another belter of a chorus here that has an octopus-like grip on you by the end.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘I’m So Broke’, 2021)

“She has quickly established her penchant for crafting tracks that feel simultaneously dynamic and well thought-out; they’re always bursting at the seams with explosive energy, but never sacrifice musical acumen.”
Happy Magazine

“Taylor B-W is combining modern electro-pop influences with the nostalgia of ’90s hip hop and R&B to create bouncy, playful tunes that speak to you on both a physical and emotional level.”
Like Velvet

Taylor will be performing a special free show as part of Great Southern Nights this April in Newtown – a perfect opportunity to reconnect and catch ‘In Ur Net’ live!

With the strength of recognition, Mia Lovelock’s ‘Winter Comes’ offers a hand towards unity

by the partae March 30, 2022
written by the partae

Mia Lovelock is excited to release her latest single Winter Comes on the 30th March 2022. Through rhythm, melody, and language, Winter Comes reflects on past crimes and shines light through growing awareness. This song is about the fragile nature of sovereignty, the scars of stolen generations, and the beauty of healing in a place that’s always been home.

The production on Winter Comes is inspired by ’90s Trip Hop and driven by relaxed downtempo beats. Reflecting acts like Massive Attack and Portishead, Lovelock merges acoustic and electronic vibes to tell a story that is close to her heart.

Lovelock believes in the power of music. “Winter Comes is about unity, healing and sovereignty for First Nations people. Bringing awareness to recognise the past, stand strong in the present, and work towards a future to unite.”

Mia Lovelock is performing at Torch Fest in Sydney on April 2, 2022. Taking place at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville, her performance will combine music, art, and fashion, featuring her own wearable art designs. Lovelock’s music will be set against a backdrop of live painting, models, dancers, and a DJ set. Torch Fest is a mental health music festival presented by Listen Up Music.

The artwork that Lovelock will create live on stage at Torch Fest will be up for silent auction at the festival, with all proceeds going to the mental health music charity Listen Up Music.

KHRUANGBIN announce ‘First Class Tour’ – November/December 2022

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae

+ special guests Kamasi Washington (Melbourne/Auckland only) & Mildlife

Tickets on sale Friday 1 April

Performing their biggest headline shows in Australia and New Zealand to date, Houston, Texas psych-funk auteurs Khruangbin will bring their First Class Tour to Fremantle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland in November/December 2022.

Last here in 2019, the acclaimed three-piece exist in their own orbit, their legendary live show – a mixtape of surf-rock cool, dubby disco and worldly funk – held down by the steady hand of drummer Donald Ray ‘DJ’ Johnson Jr, virtuosic guitarist Mark Speer, and enigmatic bassist Laura ‘Leezy’ Lee.

Live on stage Khruangbin’s electric range is performed with impeccable style, their sound rooted in globetrotting. With three studio albums to date – debut The Universe Smiles Upon You, 2018’s Con Todo El Mundo, and 2020’s Mordechai– tracks such as ‘Dern Kala’ , ‘Maria También’ and ‘People Everywhere (Still Alive)’ have become live anthems for their many fans, no mean feat for a largely instrumental group. 2021’s Mordechai Remixes featured re-imaginings by Kadhja Bonet, Soul Clap, Quantic, Harvey Sutherland, and more.

Sonic instrumental world-builders, Khruangbin’s sound is meticulously constructed and universally adored. Praised by The New York Times, Billboard, Los Angeles Times, FADER and more, they regularly sell-out multiple nights at iconic venues worldwide – from The Greek in Los Angeles to London’s O2 Academy Brixton – possessing a live show not to be missed, as attested by two recent reviews:

‘Khruangbin treated the audience to a dazzling 20-minute encore, song after enthralling song. Nearly all audience members were either swaying or dancing the entire set. If you ever have a chance to see Khruangbin live, don’t miss it!’ – utahmagazine.com

‘Drawing inspiration from Thai funk, Jamaican reggae, Asian pop, and American Funk and R&B, Khruangbin accomplishes a global sound that any music lover can appreciate’ – melodicmag.com

Joining the bill to bring light, joy and power to the Melbourne and Auckland shows is LA tenor saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington. Washington’s cinematic compositions and fearless performances have inspired a whole new audience, the dynamic Washington having worked with luminaries such as Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, St Vincent, Florence + the Machine, and Herbie Hancock. His breakout albums The Epic and Harmony Of Difference are interstellar trips through a rich history of Black American music.

Bringing their kaleidoscopic sound, Melbourne’s favourite groove cosmonauts Mildlife will join the bill as main support in Fremantle and Brisbane, plus open proceedings at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The Melbourne event is presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE, a new state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

Tickets go on sale Friday 1 April (2pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/khruangbin. Frontier Members can access the Presale starting Wednesday 30 March (11am local time).

Don’t miss the incredible Khruangbin performing live, this Nov/Dec!

WITH SUPPORT FROM
PUNK LEGENDS
CIRCLE JERKS

Hermosa Beach punk rock band Pennywise have today announced they will be returning down under for an Australian tour in September 2022. Pennywise will be bringing with them legendary punk band Circle Jerks, who will be hitting Australia for the very first time. Tour details below.

Pennywise will be performing songs from their entire catalogue including the recently CERTIFIED ARIA GOLD selling album Straight Ahead, which debuted No. 8 on the ARIA charts (the bands highest charting album to date).

Fletcher Dragge enthuses;
“Finally Pennywise gets to come back to our home away from home, Australia!

Where the beer flows nonstop, along with the chaos. Never a dull moment on a Pennywise tour down under… only one thing could make it better than usual, and that would be coming to town with our mentors and long-time friends THE CIRCLE JERKS!!!  They are back with a vengeance!

This is gonna be an off the fucking hook nonstop party!  And we can’t wait! Get your tix, get on the booze, and get in the pit, we’re coming for you fuckers!!!!!”

Pennywise are no strangers to Australia having toured the country many times over. Most recently in 2019 on the 20th Anniversary Straight Ahead tour with sold out shows Australia wide.

Formed in the South Bay of Los Angeles—a neighbourhood with a rich punk-rock history—Pennywise began in 1988. The band went on to amass an international following with their relentless touring and a melodic, high-energy sound fusing classic punk, surf punk, and blistering hardcore. Through the years, Pennywise have solidified their place in punk history with iconic songs like “Fuck Authority,” “Alien,” and “Bro Hymn” (their timeless ode to brotherhood and departed friends).

Pennywise have released 11 albums over the last three decades, including: Pennywise (1991), Unknown Road (1993), About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997), Straight Ahead(1999), Land of the Free? (2001), From the Ashes (2003), The Fuse (2005), Reason to Believe (2008), All or Nothing (2012), and Yesterdays (2014). Resolutely working outside the margins of the mainstream, the band has emerged as an enduringly vibrant staple on the worldwide touring circuit.

Easy Browns

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

In Thornbury in Naarm/Melbourne on Wurundjeri Country.

How did Easy Browns come to be?

I was a bassist once upon a time, helping my friends’ music come to fruition. Eventually my friends’ projects had petered out into nonexistence, and with the live performance bug already well festering beneath my epidermis I had to come up with my own schtick.

The name Easy Browns comes from days when my friend James Campbell (who actually engineered the record) and I were playing duo shows out at the Mirboo North Brewery (free meal and unlimited beers, who wouldn’t!) and although incredibly basic, my songs were starting to come to fruition. We were smoking scoobs out the back of James’ mums house after a show and Liam (now our drummer) came up with the atrocity that was our earliest branding ‘Easy Browns Truckstop Chicken Jam Band’. Naturally when you start that low it can only be an upward trajectory from there.

What’s been happening recently?

Studying environments and society at RMIT, hauling ass to get this album out there, learning Japanese, running Critter Records and releasing friend’s music, doing live sound for a crust, and enjoying loving conversation with friends and family.

You’re about to release your fourth and final studio album, what can we expect?

Catchy tunes and twists and turns.

What influenced the sound and songwriting?

A love for punk and rock and roll, the fire in our bellies, injustice, environmental breakdown.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and with whom?

Engineered out in a barn in Churchill in the Latrobe Valley on a tascam 4-track cassette machine, the rest was recorded at home and beyond.

Mixed with my friend Fabian Hunter, mastered by the master, Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?

DIFFERENTLY. Last album we mostly did in the dead of winter in a warehouse-y space over two days of tracking. It was a stress nightmare and very challenging. We did this one over 5 days out in the country, it was very laid back, eating blackberries off the bush, playing every day, kicking the footy, you can hear it on the record.

Why is it the final album and how does it feel?

We’ve been through a lot in the last couple of years, it feels like a good time. Although now that things are heating up and we’re copping some love, maybe it seems silly? Cognitive dissonance is present in my noggin. We’ll see how we go in the long run, but we’ll definitely resume operations if we get asked to play Meredith Music Fest HINT HINT.

Please tell us about the accompanying tour, where are you headed?

Just to Beechworth on Yorta Yorta Country, some spots in Lutruwita/Tasmania (our favourite place to visit) and then returning home to Naarm/Melbourne for our last show at Northcote Social Club on Thursday 14th April. Funds and time have been a bit too tight to do the whole shebangabang all over the country.

Tell us about the analogy of ‘Commercial Fluff’ and ‘Unbelievable Dust’ and what it represents:

WELL. Commercial Fluff represents toxic consumption habits that are degrading our ecosystems and producing immense amounts of waste. It also represents the state of commercial radio and the absolute garble they pervade the airwaves with (long live community radio!), the reduction of true art into ‘content’ for consumption and the fact that we’ve made an album full of rock/pop HITS haha.

Unbelievable Dust follows Commercial Fluff, Humans compromising the environments that life needs to survive, and degrading lands with pollution, overharvesting, abuse. Climate change is going to accentuate extreme weather patterns, increase soil erosion and proliferate desertification, which leads us unbelievable dust.

Pretty dark themes for such an upbeat album, but like many young people we’re terrified of what the future may hold, we’ve all gotta start talking about this! We can’t just sweep it under the rug, especially not Australia who definitely has so much potential for improvement.

What are your favourite moments at live shows?

Tight quarters, silly dancing, having yarns with friends and fans.

Each member’s favourite single from the album?
Zak: Frog Bit, melodic and lovely, yet heavy and progressive.
Shelby: Bubbles would be one of my favourites to play because it’s boppy and it flows great even though it sounds like it’s kinda disjointed. Probably would also be my favourite song on the album. it gets me in a great mood.
Liam: Those Sandy Dogs, because it’s something we haven’t done before with Shelby’s songwriting and lead vocals

Lucas: Modest Automobile, because it’s got lots of quirky elements and cheeky witty lyrics. Also has a nice mid tempo drum and bass groove that keeps driving the song under the guitar changes to keep it bopping. Or golden Pegasus because it’s just catchy and really happy summer day vibe. Plus the “ah ah ah ah” part with the quacky double stop wah guitar just hits the spot.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Heaps of Stereolab, Yasmasuki Singers, Maximum RocknRoll radio station, and heaps of underground gems.

What’s planned for 2022?

I’m learning Japanese atm, Shelby and I are going to go to Japan and visit Shelby’s brother who teaches over there and do some teaching ourselves (possibly). It’s been a while since we’ve been outside of the country, it would be nice to envelop ourselves in another culture and learn and share.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Banh Mi is the best, Shelby and I are also hell keen on Ramen atm after watching so much Naruto lately! I’m easy,  I love to hang out at the park throwing frisbee and kicking the footy, also at Cafe Gummo, my favourite bar in Naarm.

Grace Sanders Returns With A / B-Side Singles ‘Anymore’ & ‘Nothing’

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae

“‘Scrolling’, although forlorn, is musically forward-facing. It takes its cues from the prevailing hyper-pop movement, a kind of pop music that .. absorbs and propagates the prominent communication methods of the early 2020s.” (Beat)

“i love how you’ve paired some souful rnb pop with some wild, crunchy, colourful production and twists. it keeps you guessing and keeps you hooked!” 4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘Scrolling’]

“It’s a great mix of addictive basslines, sultry synths and vocals that leave you wanting more. Grace grabs your attention from the very first second and doesn’t let go.” (Cool Accidents) [About ‘NO FAIR’]

“‘Scrolling’ is a glistening electronic-pop ride that also features feverish yet ethereal production complemented by Grace’s charming vocals.” (Scenestr)

“Let it unfold around you, slowly and intentionally, thick with melodies that become more memorable each time she repeats them.” (Sound Doctrine) [About ‘Dissipate’]

“Accomplished work from Grace on this track. The first half is all delicate and restrained before the balance shifts, Grace loosens the vocals and the production swells impressively.”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Dissipate’]

“Love this. Such a strong, woozy vocal, tops production and excellent song structure and hook.”
4 / 5 (Zan Rowe, Triple J) [About ‘Green’]

“It’s a charming four-minutes that centres on this genre-mixing pop sound that’s full of bubbly confidence and Grace Sanders’ signature charm” (Pilerats) [About ‘Green’]

Grace Sanders shares mesmerising new single (NME)

Poised, powerful and utterly enthralling, electro-pop heroine Grace Sanders is making her 2022 entrance with the release of new single ‘Anymore’ alongside B-Side track ‘Nothing’, both out on March 25.

Since the release of last year’s glittering hyper-pop track ‘Scrolling’, Grace Sanders has been on the move, joining Great Gable on their massive National Tour, presented by Triple J, Across The Road and Select Music, continuing until June.

Sanders’ busy schedule hasn’t stopped the Niche Productions signed artist from crafting her eclectic blend of electro-pop, psych and soul however, as she uncovers new single ‘Anymore’ in all of its pulsing, blood-bubbling, hyper-pop brilliance.

With the pulsing thud of a spiking heart rate, ‘Anymore’ wastes no time as vibrating synths, thumping beats and gritty basslines overwhelm the senses. The elegant composure in Grace’s vocal delivery completely captures and controls as submerged synth layers bubble towards the surface. With an industrial electro-pop darkness that belongs in an exclusive underground rave, the chorus erupts in a thrilling frenzy of throbbing sound and pulsing power.

Grace continues to demonstrate her vocal abilities, reaching a delicate height in the bridge before reclaiming their deep intoxicating drama as further synth-pop layers are explored in their shining grit. Unrelenting from start to finish, catching your breath isn’t an option as Sanders provides a new sonic experience to explore at every twist and turn.

On the flip side, ‘Nothing’ provides an entrancing reprieve from the addictive chaos of ‘Anymore’. Taking a reverb-filled, psychedelic approach to electro-pop, this track features unhurried vocoder affected vocals, decadent synths and strong basslines that are more inducive to a closed-eye trance experience than its A-Side companion.

Wielding her lyrical prowess to bring a refreshing twist to what can be taken as modern break-up songs, Grace Sanders hits on the realisation of reaching a breakpoint in ‘Anymore’, followed by the introspective poetry of ‘Nothing’. Grace Sanders states:

“‘Anymore’ came out of a place of deep, existential frustration; in my work, in my art, in my disposition and in my relationships. I was walking home from work during one of those ‘slogging it’ periods where I was grinding as many hours as I could to save up some cash and I was hitting my point of burnout.

‘Nothing’ came out of a place of mourning for expectations that can never be met, and the kind of emptiness that comes with reconciling your intentions with the reality of the outcomes.”

Sanders’ previous releases have seen widespread support from Cool Accidents, NME, Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, theMusic, Acidstag, Pilerats, AU Review, RTR FM Sound Selection and more.

Don’t waste any more time… Grace Sanders’ new singles ‘Anymore’ and ‘Nothing’ are out on March 25, and you can catch her on the Great Gable National Tour from now until June.

Big Orange Give Their All In Nostalgic New Single ‘Love’s Not Enough’

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae

#1 on US College Radio Station WUTK FM FEB 2022

Named in ‘Top 25 Artists to Watch 2021’ (theMusic)

Rock Song of the Year Nominee 2020 at the WAM Awards

RTRFM #14 Most Played Track 2020

“Indie Rock and Roll as it should be. Straight away you can feel the attitude and confidence both in the vocals and musically. Big Orange is doing Australia proud…” 4 / 5 (LA on Lock)

“There’s that kind-of intimate indie songwriting at the record’s core – that’s something that’s become distinctive to Big Orange over the last few years, and something we hope never disappears.” (Pilerats)

“‘By The Dozen’ again showcases the innate ability of frontman Daniel Davis to craft sonic textures across a multitude of genres… a big-sounding, sophisticated hit of rock & roll power that wouldn’t be out of place as a stadium sing-along.”
(Scenestr)

“Big Orange prove themselves more than capable at trying on nearly any sound across the rock n roll songbook. Rolling grooves and big hooks are in abundance here and sure to please fans of The Delta Riggs, ‘Give Out’ era Primal Scream and more.” 4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J)

Known for their resounding rock grandeur merging nostalgic indie-pop textures, Perth indie outfit Big Orange are holding nothing back in their newest single ‘Love’s Not Enough’ (out March 25).

Backing up the release of the highly-praised alt-rock single ‘By The Dozen’ earlier in the year, the four-piece band, led by Daniel Davis, are continuing to explore their current affinity for 90’s Britpop elements found within big-sounding rock ravines.

‘Love’s Not Enough’ gets straight to the point, as a rapid trance of recurrent electric guitar riffs and an addictively relentless beat dominates the senses. Davis’ vocals emerge from a time decades past, resonating with an echoing intensity that peaks in the chorus alongside synthesised specks of nostalgic indie-pop in the form of flying synths and running percussion.

A new inquisitive guitar layer joins the mix, moving towards a grungy bridge featuring head moving beats and metallic riffs, before gravelly desperation sneaks into Davis’ voice, a final glance in the rearview mirror before leaving the past behind.

Reflecting on an ended relationship, Davis brings his distinctive lyrical maturity to ‘Love’s Not Enough’, reaching insightful conclusions that can hopefully provide some closure, as he states:

“As the title suggests, the song is about the fact that sometimes even the forces of love aren’t strong enough to hold two together.”

Unsurprisingly, the band’s previous releases have seen support from US College Radio, National broadcaster IndieXL (Netherlands), Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, Scenestr, LA On Lock, Backseat Mafia, theMusic, Pilerats, XPress Magazine, Junction Records, RTRFM, FBi Radio, 4ZZZ, 3RRR and more, as well as being nominated for the WAM Rock Song of the Year in 2020. The group have also played coveted support and festival slots including RTRFM flagship event In The Pines, WAMFest and the inaugural WAY WAY WEST Festival.

PALACE 9 Delivers Alt-Rock Bliss With A Debut Single Sized Slice of ‘Paradise’

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae

Delving into the deepest corners of the mind, Brisbane alt-rock trio PALACE 9 builds upon a bedrock of masterful melodies and stimulating storytelling to breathe life into their inner fantasy worlds, leading to the creation of their debut single ‘Paradise’ (out March 25).

Using a decadent mix of indie/ alt influences to make high-powered guitar-based rock that balances expressive indie-rock artfulness with dreamy, surf-rock sensibilities, PALACE 9 strives to transform fragmented visions of timeless utopias into accessible sonic experiences and powerhouse performances.

The band’s debut single ‘Paradise’ is in a world of its own, as overdriven guitars combine comfortably with nimble percussion, making way for rich and resonate lead vocals to roam confidently through the verse. With the introduction of oscillating riffs, vocal harmonies and expanding drums, the chorus shivers with the ecstasy of a nirvana that is almost within reach, sitting on the edge of dreams and reality.

High electric guitar notes arrive on a breeze of island air while the low, loyal bass moves as fluidly as sand, shifting with the movements of the song, yet always there as a grounding force. With each dominant chorus, the pursued paradise becomes a more tangible reality, acting as a guiding force to relish in the beauty of life.

In true PALACE 9 style, ‘Paradise’ comes from the depths of the mind, where creativity is able to flow freely and harmony is born between the self and the ever-challenging world we face, as the band explains:

“‘Paradise’ comes from a place deep inside, on the edge of dreams and reality. Each of us can imagine these dreams or visions of beautiful places, our ideal world. But we must be inclined to use our vision of Paradise to guide us in our day-to-day lives which sees us at the mercy of the mind, constantly entangled by ego. With little control of the volatile world we find ourselves in, we have but two options; to hide in Paradise or to live our dreams as reality. What does your perfect world look like?”

For your own slice of alt-rock paradise, join PALACE 9 at their ‘Paradise’ Single Launch at O’Skulligans on March 24, ahead of the debut single release on March 25.

SPE3D – The Funk

by the partae March 28, 2022
written by the partae

Dark, edgy & cocky SPE3D’s new tune “The Funk” is a rough ride by anyone’s standards. Like flick on the dick, in a good way. “The Funk” has thumping bass and grinding synths on top of massive gangsta swag. SPE3D is fast becoming one to watch, in Melbourne. The 23-year old’s productions range from pumping house to banging bass music and always have a sinister edge. A recipe for screw face,”The Funk” is no exception and for sure will make you contort your features with that stanky drop. A loud mid-tempo banger for fans of DJ Snake, Dillon Francis and Fabian Mazur.
