written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m based in Vancouver, BC!

How did you first start playing music?

For as long as I can remember I’d always loved music, but I didn’t start performing until I was 9. I first started with singing competitions in my area and then worked my way up to solo gigs in bars and restaurants where I’d sing and play the guitar for a couple hours at a time. It’s very funny being a young performer, sometimes you’re not actually allowed in the spaces you’re performing in. Once I had to be walked by a chaperone between the stage, green room, and bathroom so the bar wouldn’t get in trouble for having a 15 year old wandering around by herself.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

Recently I’ve been writing and planning my future releases after ‘False Love’ drops. Pre-Covid I was already a bit of a social recluse, so not much has changed socially for me, but I’ve really missed performing. I’ve done a couple outdoor and online shows, but it’s not quite the same as things were before the pandemic.

Your new EP ‘False Love’ will be out on July 30, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

While writing this EP, we (myself, Tavish Crowe, Ryan Stewart, and Troy Samson) were inspired by a lot of different artists, including Dua Lipa, PVRIS, Doja Cat, Carlie Hanson, and Tate McRae. Writing this EP was a learning experience for me. A lot of personal and musical growth happened for me throughout its creation and I think you can hear that throughout the tracks! In two of the songs on the EP (Is It Cool If We’re Lonely? and Nothing To Bleed For), I started dipping into a slightly darker pop sound, which is something I see myself continuing with in the future.

How did you go about writing the EP?

Spending lots of time in the studio! I like to think of myself as a pretty quick songwriter, all of these tracks were written in under five hours. ‘Is It Cool If We’re Lonely?’ Was definitely the fastest, Tavish and I wrote it over Zoom in less than two hours! We’re both pretty efficient songwriters (when we’re not getting distracted on random tangents), which makes working together very quick and fun! I believe that over thinking your music takes away a lot of charm and authenticity. Worrying too much about whether or not other people will be able to immediately understand a lyric or if a melody is catchy enough distracts from the process, and can make songs sound kind of rigid and flat. I tried to apply that philosophy to every song on this EP, letting the song tell us where it wants to go, instead of forcing it to be something it isn’t.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and with?

This EP was mainly produced by the incredible Ryan Stewart, except for ‘Is It Cool If We’re Lonely?’ Which was produced by the also incredible Tavish Crowe. I always think that once you find your people you should stick with them so your music doesn’t start to sound disjointed or repetitive. All of the songs on this EP were written and recorded in Vancouver, with the earliest song (Scar Tissue) recorded in early 2019, and the latest (Is It Cool If We’re Lonely) written in February 2021. The songs were mixed and mastered by Jason Van Poederooyen (aka JVP).

How did you approach the recording/production process?

Throughout the writing process for ‘False Love’ I gained a lot of confidence in my abilities as a songwriter and contributor to the final version of a song. Most of the time, I would send a couple references to Ryan or Tavish, and they would come up with a track that took inspiration from that. I learned over time how to express more specifically what I wanted things to sound like, but I’m still not super great with a lot of production terms, so a lot of the time I just have to badly beatbox and hope they understand what I’m going for. On a high note, I’ve gotten pretty good at singing like a distorted bass haha.

What programs/equipment did you use?

Ryan and I use Logic, while Tavish prefers Ableton. For the most part I only really record myself for covers and demo vocals if I’m writing over Zoom, but my mic is an Aston Spirit. I don’t know what microphones were used for the final productions as all the songs were recorded at very different times and in two different studios, sorry!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been going through a bit of an emo revival recently, so a lot of My Chemical Romance and Paramore, but I’ve also been really loving Olivia Rodrigo, Willow, and Måneskin. I’m loving this late 90’s to early 2000’s rock/pop punk revival as that’s a lot of what I listened to growing up!

What do you like to do away from music?

I love photography, photo editing, and creating videos. Those interests are very helpful with creating content for my music career, so I spend a lot of time on both sides of the camera and hunched over my laptop. I actually created the art for the EP myself with a projector, my camera with a self timer, and many hours of photoshop.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

More music! I hope to release at least one more single before 2021 is over. I’m really excited about the new music I’ve been creating recently and I can’t wait to share it with my listeners!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

This might be a little bit weird, but I’m kind of obsessed with fried cauliflower. Something about it is addictive and I can eat so much of it. It’s kind of like the best of both worlds: it’s yummy and deep fried, but also a vegetable, so I’m not being too unhealthy when I eat an entire plate of it myself. My favourite place to hang out with a friend is thrift stores. I love that every time you go in, there’s different stuff to look at, and a lot of it is really cool or funny. It’s also much more sustainable than shopping for new stuff all the time, and super rewarding when you find a really good item.

IJALE RELEASES HIGH-ENERGY NEW SINGLE ‘LIKE THAT’ FEATURING YUNG SHOGUN & THATKIDMAZ OUT TODAY VIA DAILY NIGHTLY

LISTEN/PLAY

Backing the release of introspective single ‘MI GORENG’ comes Melbourne-based vocalist, producer & rapper IJALE’s latest release ‘LIKE THAT’, a high-energy collaboration featuring Melbourne’s rising Hip-Hop stars Yung Shōgun & ThatKidMaz.

Pivoting from the heavy themes that often encompass IJALE’s music, ‘LIKE THAT’ is a carefree, Afro-fusion banger born from an impromptu session between the three post Melbourne’s gruelling nine month lockdown.

“We were just vibing and having fun and obviously gassed to be hanging out with people in real life”, says IJALE on the recording of the single.

Capturing the energy in the studio that night, the trio exchange blazingly flippant bars over a high energy bar self-produced by IJALE.

‘LIKE THAT’ follows his triple j supported debut EP ‘Wildly Disparate Sounds’ & triple j Unearthed Feature Artist mid last year, as well as his recent collaboration with Dugong Jr. ‘Ceramic’ which landed coveted Spotify playlists New Music Friday AU/NZ, The Local List, metropolis, Poolside Grooves, crush & the hybrid.

IJALE is one of six lucky recipients of a triple j Unearthed/NIDA music video competition, and will be creating a music video later in the year.

Bio

Melbourne producer, vocalist and performer, IJALE, is a self-contained master of his sound.

A keen music fan and avid creator, he blends a myriad of afrocentric sounds and western influences that reflect his Nigerian heritage, his Australian upbringing and the multifaceted taste of an open-minded listener of the internet age. These concoctions vary in sound from piece to piece, but are usually punctuated by hints of African percussion, infectious basslines and layered electronic textures, all of which pay direct homage to the hallmark genres of black creativity including jazz, soul, r&b and hip hop.

Jerry Agbinya, aka IJALE, began releasing music in 2017 but has been busy honing and perfecting his songwriting and production skills for years. Following a brief break from his previous project Spirals, IJALE hit the ground running with support shows alongside Winston Surfshirt, Raiza Biza and Phondupe. Since then, the Melbourne based  artist has been busy releasing multiple singles, including his recent track ‘Coffee Cups’ feat. Zephyrr Greene, out via French label Kitsuné Musique. In January of 2020, IJALE hosted his first show and played alongside some of Melbourne’s most promising up and comers including Jordan Dennis, Nasty Mars, Rara Zulu & more.

IJALE has a unique knack for sound design and mood, which he effortlessly encapsulates in both recordings and in his live shows. Keep your eyes on this latest Melbourne producer, as he’s about to take the next step on his eventual path to global fame.

OSCAR OSCAR returns with intimate new single + video for ‘Set In Stone’

by the partae July 30, 2021
written by the partae
“Brisbane producer oscar oscar has established himself as a “one-to-watch””
– Pilerats“It takes a special kind of artist to tell a story without any words, and once again oscar oscar has knocked it out of the park.”
– Purple Sneakers

“Very clever, cool, and interesting stuff….”
– Richard Kingsmill, triple j

Brisbane producer Oscar Oscar is back stronger than ever with his new single ‘Set In Stone’, releasing today alongside a brooding, lo-fi video clip. The track has also landed on Spotify’s New Music Friday AU/NZ, Local List, and New Dance Beats.

After a short hiatus, Oscar Oscar returns with ‘Set In Stone’, showcasing his evolving sound of intelligent electronic music; bridging the gap between bedroom pop and alternative electronica.  Known for evoking the sensibilities with delicate and atmospheric soundscapes, ‘Set In Stone’ however, pulsates a darker, provocative tone. The release is an exploration of his subconsciousness and of new sounds.

“In my previous work I fused different genres, so my new music is similar in that way. I just make music because I rarely know how to articulate what I’m really feeling, and so music is a way for me to work that out.”, says Oscar Oscar.

The accompanying video clip cleverly echoes the mood of the track and aimed to “explore what emotional response computer-generated imagery could evoke in an audience”, tells the director Joshua Richards who marks his first publicly released collaboration with Oscar Oscar. The visual aesthetic was experimental in nature, fusing impressions of movement from the artist with overlays of images of stones, rocks, and cliff faces.

Oscar Oscar is a self-produced singer-songwriter, creating in his bedroom studio since his inception in 2017, releasing a string of singles via Majestic Casual Records. Since then, his catalog has amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify, and has received airplay across triple j and triple j unearthed as well as praise from notable tastemakers including Stoney Roads, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more.

The first of more to come from Oscar Oscar this year, don’t sit back idly and get around his new release.

‘Set In Stone’ is out now.

B.Riley

CMND CTRL 002

incl. Ray Kajioka remix

CTRL002  – September 10th, 2021 Digital

CMND CTRL is a brand-new imprint from Miami Florida based producer Brandon Riley.   Dedicated to musical expression, immersion, technology, and innovation, we present to you CMND CTRL 002.

1. King Snake

2. King Snake (Ray Kajioka Remix)

3. The Passage

The CMND CTRL sound will focus mainly on the Techno and Tech House related genres, and on this second release (CTRL002) we dive into a darker, more tribal and hypnotic style of Techno.

King Snake lays the groundwork with its booming kick drum, seductive percussion, and hypnotic synth overtones that continuously rise and fall throughout the mix.  A relentlessly driving track perfect for that late night DJ session.

King Snake (Ray Kajioka Remix) Berlin based Techno wizard Ray Kajioka takes the reigns on this release’s remix duties and delivers a fast-paced take on the original mix.  Ray’s production abilities are on full display with this remix as he rains down wild high hats and percussions matched with a steady kick and well-timed synth stabs.   A guaranteed crowd pleaser.

The Passage brings a bit more of a dark and dreamy style mix to the dancefloor with some well-placed percussion giving this track a mysterious tribal techno vibe.  Warm sounding sonic textures playout through the mix, with a nice pulsing analogue synth hook driving the main part of the track.  Definitely a strong track to build up a crowd with.

PRAISE FOR SKEPTA "Pioneer" Pitchfork "A legend" XXL "The reigning king of UK grime" The Guardian Skepta returns with a brand new five-track EP. Titled ALL IN, the EP is Skepta’s first solo release since 2019’s acclaimed Ignorance Is Bliss album. LISTEN HERE. The EP title is inspired by Skepta’s newfound love of poker, a game which he sees as a metaphor for life itself (“you can be dealt good cards or bad cards, but if you don’t get good cards you can still bluff, hustle and win…you learn when to play aggressive or when to hold back and chill”). ALL IN sees Skepta putting everything on the line across five tracks that contain an album’s worth of quality. Featuring production from Skepta himself alongside JAE5, Ragz Originale, and Josh Faulkner, the EP also sees vocal collaborations with J Balvin (on lead track and video 'Nirvana') and Teezee and Kid Cudi (on 'Peace Of Mind'). Written before lockdown, the UK rapper has been waiting for the right moment for its release. With live appearances on the horizon including headline shows at London’s Wireless and Manchester’s Parklife festivals, that time is now. In Skepta’s own words, “this music isn’t for people to download and discuss. It’s music to feel when I perform it live, music for people to celebrate with their friends” The EP opens with 'Bellator', a track that lives up to its warrior billing. With Skepta and Ragz Originale on production, it’s a classic Skepta scene-setter for the movie to come. Next is 'Peace Of Mind', a song Skepta admits is “one of those tracks that will become bigger than me”. Opening with a Delphonics sample and produced by Skepta and Josh Faulkner, the track features verses from Teezee and Kid Cudi set to light up parties around the world; 'Nirvana' - the latest classic JAE5-production - sees Skepta teaming up with Colombian superstar J Balvin on a Latin American-influenced track inspired by the time Skepta spent in the region. It’s followed by 'Lit Like This', the first track Skepta and JAE5 made together following their legendary 2020 IG Live lockdown clash. It sees the two artists’ worlds coming together on a song Skepta describes as “this year’s December in Nigeria anthem”. The EP crescendos with 'Eyes On Me', a track that encapsulates the past, present, and future of grime, paying homage to its origins via Platinum 45 and More Fire Crew’s classic 'Oi' sample while signposting its future over classic, future-facing Skepta and Ragz production. To celebrate the news, 'Nirvana ft. J Balvin' is accompanied by a video directed by KLVDR. WATCH IT HERE. by the partae July 30, 2021
written by the partae

“With every release the rising Pop star ups spectacle in every way, from the writing and  production to the accompanying visual identity. I’m steadfast in my opinion that Mila Nile is one  of the best acts to break through the monotony of today’s Commercial Pop landscape.”  – Luke, Futuremag Music

“All hail our new pop queen.” – Celline Narinli, Triple J Unearthed

“Mila is an extremely smart songwriter.” – Nic Kelly, Project U

“There is a uniqueness, a smartness and a real artistry in her music which has only gotten better  and better as her career has progressed.” – Women In Pop

“The Swedish Lorde” – Fashion Journal

“This icy alternative pop innovator glides over boisterous beats with a cool and collected vibe  that can only be compared to icons of the genre” – Tone Deaf

Sydney-based Indie pop innovator Mila Nile, celebrates  the release of her debut EP, Do You Remember That?,  a collection of nostalgia-soaked pop tracks chronicling  the five most influential moments in the singer’s   journey from adolescence to adulthood.

“Like most people, I’ve spent more of the past year thinking about the life I’ve lived than actually  living it,” Mila explains. “That’s definitely reflected in this collection”.

The five-track EP features a track listing in chronological order, exploring the highest highs and  lowest lows of the Swedish-born singer’s life.

The EP’s lead single, Old School Calling, sits at the more optimistic end of the EP’s emotional  spectrum, a joyful celebration song about friendships that feel like they’ve existed for a lifetime.  The track’s upbeat chorus is buoyed by a gang vocal, featuring voices of some of Mila’s closest  friends, recorded in their homes around the world.

The EP’s penultimate track, Daughter, is a heartfelt examination of life as an Australian-based  expat unable to return home to family and friends in Covid times. The raw performance features  Mila Nile at her most vulnerable, as she pleads for a chance to return to the simplicity of being  close to family.

Mila Nile will be celebrating the release of her debut EP, Do You Remember That?, with a launch  party at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar in early September (dates pending due to Covid  conditions).

Do You Remember That?

All tracks written by Mila Nile & Simon Brock

Produced by HVTCH

Distributed globally by AWAL

Track-by-track breakdown

Break My Heart To The Beat

A brooding, 80’s-infused bop about dealing with loss and dancing out your demons.

Too Much Like Love

A bright, shimmering track about trying not to fall in love – and failing joyfully.

Old School Calling

An R&B-influenced singalong jam about new friendships that feel like they’ll last forever.

Daughter

A homesick ballad about how getting what you want isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Don’t Need Your Love

A self-love anthem about how the only opinion that really matters is your own.

JACKSON WANG + INTERNET MONEY SHARE NEW SINGLE + MUSIC VIDEO FOR ‘DRIVE YOU HOME’ FROM JACKSON’S FORTHCOMING SECOND ALBUM

by the partae July 29, 2021
written by the partae

Today, global megastar Jackson Wang and production powerhouse Internet Money release ‘Drive You Home‘, via 88rising, distributed by 12Tone Music LLC. LISTEN HERE.

To complement the single, Jackson has also released the music video to ‘Drive You Home‘ today, which Jackson scripted, directed, and produced himself alongside Mamesjao, WATCH HERE.

Featuring production from David Stewart (BTS – ‘Dynamite’) and Nick Mira (Juice Wrld – ‘Lucid Dreams’, Lil Tecca – ‘Ransom’, Internet Money & Gunna ft. Don Toliver, Nav – ‘Lemonade’), ‘Drive You Home‘ tells a heartbreaking, emotional story of a long night told in reverse. Listeners will notice that ‘Drive You Home‘ samples and interpolates the iconic 1984 single ‘Drive‘ from the legendary new wave band The Cars. The 80s-inspired love song blends sentimental guitar-driven melodies with booming hip-hop percussion and features Jackson’s most affecting and confident vocal performance to date.

Speaking on ‘Drive You Home‘, Jackson Wang says the song revolves around the idea of, “When I’m not here, who is going to drive you home?” His approach to the visual was also abstract. “I’ve always explained my music videos, the backstory, and the plot, to my audiences. But with this visual, 10 people can watch it and have 10 different feelings. I can’t wait for the fans to interpret it.”

‘Drive You Home‘ follows the global success of Jackson’s hit single, ‘LMLY’. To date, ‘LMLY’ has garnered over 60M streams, debuted at #1 on the Apple Music Charts (All Genres, 27 Markets), lived at #40 on Global Viral Charts on Spotify, and received over 15M views on the official music video (1.2M views in first 24 hours). Both ‘LMLY’ and ‘Drive You Home‘ will ladder up to Jackson’s highly-anticipated forthcoming second album expected this year.

‘Drive You Home‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

TARYN Shares New Single “Brand New”

by the partae July 29, 2021
written by the partae

LISTEN HERE:

Today, Atlanta-based singer-songwriter TARYN shares her new single, “Brand New.” Opening with echoing finger clicks, TARYN begins the song with a simple chant that continues over the course of the track: “Wash my mouth of all the little things / Clean it out and begin again / Brand new ooh / And begin again brand new.” Even as the interlocking drums, bass and guitar kick in, her ethereal vocals remain the song’s driving force, building throughout with lush, layered harmonies.

TARYN wrote “Brand New” while driving on the freeway and worked with producer Joey Burcham to turn it into a fully-formed track. “There was a simple message I wanted to convey lyrically and the instrumental did the rest,” TARYN explains of her approach. “I’ve carried my past around and let regrets fuel decisions without justification. ‘Brand New’ let me realize our past is not something we have to correct, but it helps us understand our growth. We’re here to learn, experience, and explore. It’s a gift to be vulnerable, to feel comfortable expressing experiences in sonically harmonious ways”

Influenced by old soul and modern pop, TARYN seamlessly blends warm vocals with tasteful, cutting edge production. Lyrically, she searches for the connections that make each and every one of us human, exploring these areas with curiosity and understanding.

Originally hailing from Ohio, TARYN’s childhood was soundtracked by artists spanning all genres and decades. Her parents filled the house with the sounds of artistic greats like Norah Jones, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and Cat Stevens. From a young age, TARYN was encouraged to explore her creativity and fell in love with guitar, her first instrument, when she was just six years old. After years of honing her sound and songwriting, the now 23-year-old Atlanta-based artist is coming into her own as an impressive left-of-center singer and songwriter.

“Madi Diaz has a voice that erupts like a geyser.’” – NYLON

“A slow burning, passionate ballad…It certainly has a lot of heart to it.” – The Needle Drop

“[‘Woman In My Heart’ is] a saccharine blend of guitars and building percussion, with Diaz’s vocals resonating through it all.” – Paste

Nashville-based songwriter Madi Diaz reveals the final pre-release single/video, “Resentment,” from her forthcoming album, History Of A Feeling, out August 27th via ANTI-.

Diaz has released a string of powerful singles, and today’s “Resentment” is resonant and heartbreakingly honest. The song, written by Diaz, Wrabel, and Jamie Floyd, originally appeared on Kesha’s last album and featured Sturgill Simpson and Brian Wilson. In Diaz’s version of the song, the rawness of the emotional reaction she is singing about matches the recording – stripped back to only vocals and guitar: “I don’t hate you babe it’s worse than that // Cause you hurt me and I’m more than sad // I’ve been building up this thing for months // Resentment.” The accompanying video directed by $ECK  at the Four Lane Auto Salvage in Nashville picks up where the video for “New Person, Old Place” left off. Diaz wanders around the junkyard, letting her emotions out on the surrounding wreckage.

“It felt completely and strangely cathartic  walking around ruin and wreckage in the salvage yard making the ‘Resentment’ video,” says Diaz. “It was somehow representative of all the feelings I’ve let sit and rot and rust, probably becoming more hazardous with time and neglect. It was almost a kind of joyful act smashing up cars like maybe I was crushing and compounding my own resentments. Basically it’s cheap therapy and I highly recommend it. I loved making this video and I think Seck has such a beautiful eye…somehow he made poetry out of something pretty brutal.”

Watch Madi Diaz’s Video for “Resentment”

History Of A Feeling undeniably marks Diaz’s status as a first-rate songwriter, a craft she’s spent years refining. Across the album, she cycles through the full spectrum of emotions of coming to terms with the dissolution of a meaningful relationship. She plays the line between the personal and the general with dexterity: in Diaz’s hands, quiet moments of self-pity are transformed into grand meditations on heartbreak, and unwieldy knots of big existential feelings are smoothed out with a sense of clear-eyed precision.

The seedlings of History Of A Feeling first sprouted three years ago, before beginning collaborations with co-producer Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver). Pulling from a range of folk, country and pop leanings, as much influenced by Patty Griffin and Lori McKenna as PJ Harvey and Kathleen Hanna, History Of A Feeling is comprised of the most direct and introspective songs Diaz has ever written. Throughout, she seamlessly weaves a profound sense of intimacy and camaraderie as her lyrics are relatable to anyone who has experienced heartbreak and great change in some manner. These universals are shaded by the fact that the relationship breakdown Diaz is chronicling coincided with her former partner transitioning, a complex reckoning Diaz approaches with empathy, candour, and care.

DOOMS CHILDREN (WADE MACNEIL OF ALEXISONFIRE) EMBARKS ON NEW MUSICAL DIRECTION WITH DEEPLY PERSONAL SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 20

Poignant New Single/Video “Psyche Hospital Blues” Is Out Now

Dooms Children – the psych-rock project from Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire, Gallows) – premieres a new single and video today from the forthcoming, self-titled album out October 20, 2021 on Dine Alone Records / Cooking Vinyl Australia. The rocking and poignant song, “Psyche Hospital Blues”, was written about MacNeil’s personal experiences during rehab in 2020.

The video for “Psyche Hospital Blues” is directed by Mitch Barns (Barnburner Films) and presents a tongue-in-cheek yet poignant interpretation of MacNeil navigating his experiences.

“This is the most personal music I have ever released,” MacNeil acknowledges. “I tried to be honest (brutally at times) and not hide meaning or intent behind flowery language. It’s a record about my life falling apart and then trying to pick up the pieces. This album was half written while I was messed up pre-rehab, the other half while I was in rehab. This is a record about all the people I’ve met along the way. This is a record about hope. This is me at my most vulnerable.”

Dooms Children is arguably the purest distillation of MacNeil’s artistry and identity to date, and frames a rather tumultuous and ultimately transcendent few years of his life. The record digs into entirely new musical and emotional territory for MacNeil which, considering his resume, is saying a lot. You might call it rock, blues, or psychedelic. You could compare it to the Grateful Dead, the Allmans, even Skynyrd or QOTSA at times. But that falls short. More aptly, Dooms Children sounds like twisting the throttle towards a hazy sunset on a bare highway.

The video for first single, “Flower Moon”, features Team Canada global pro street skateboarder Annie Guglia navigating the unusually quiet and empty streets of Montreal during the pandemic lockdown. Watch it here.

Central to the aural experience is its live-off-the-floor recording and organic production style. The effort was co-produced with the inimitable Daniel Romano, a prolific and acclaimed artist in his own right, with talented multi-instrumentalist Ian Romano, and Montreal guitarist Patrick Bennett rounding out the record’s musical contributors.

The Canadian singer, guitarist, songwriter, and composer has also lent his talents to numerous influential and impactful projects. He founded gritty punk outfit Black Lungs, fronts U.K. hardcore heroes Gallows, put fingerprints on recordings by the likes of Anti-Flag, Cancer Bats, and Bedouin Soundclash, and scored a handful of successful feature films and video games. Following the release of acclaimed singles ‘Left Behind’ and ‘What Are We Waiting For?’, Wave Racer today announces his long-anticipated debut album To Stop From Falling Off The Earth and shares brand new track ‘Look Up To Yourself’, out now on Eora/Sydney-based tastemaker label Astral People Recordings. A highlight from the Australian producer and multi-instrumentalist’s forthcoming full-length album, ‘Look Up To Yourself’ doubles as the record’s beating heart and core message, as Wave Racer (aka Tom Purcell) combats his anxieties with self-described “corny but helpful” advice, channelled through bright, intriguing, playful pop.

On the track, Wave Racer says, “Look Up To Yourself’ is my attempt at an anthem honouring the freedom of self-love and the perils of self-deprecation. For a long time, I found myself becoming frustrated with the amount of time and energy I would spend trying to prove my own value to myself. I couldn’t accept that I deserved to take a break, or deserved to treat myself to something nice without first having something to show for myself, as proof of my contributions. I would feel so useless if I’d had a slow day, or if I’d procrastinated for too long, and I kept subconsciously punishing myself for it. I guess it was like imposter syndrome rooted in an inferiority complex, which was a vicious spiral. So the song is about my discovery of that perilous habit within myself, and more broadly a warning to others about it. It’s meant to be a reminder that you have to go easy on yourself sometimes, and that it’s always just a matter of perspective. The same way you look up to the people you admire, that needs to be the way you look at yourself.”

The single is also supported by a music video directed and produced by Rome with cinematography by Jake Lutz. The clip features submissions from fans including a cameo from Busta Breezie.

The music video was inspired by Wave Racer’s memories “of a time when I was unable to allow my creativity to flourish, out of a stifling fear of inadequacy”. The producer put a callout on social media for video submissions showcasing special skills and talents, hoping to encourage fans to “look inwards as a source of inspiration” to combat similar fears, and to demonstrate that “comparisons of individual merits are largely arbitrary and meaningless. And that you may become your own worst enemy if you indulge in these comparisons. Nobody can do you better than you can do you, in other words.”

Alongside the release of ‘Look Up To Yourself’ come rescheduled dates for Wave Racer’s first Australian headline shows since 2015’s Flash Drive tour. Joined by his full band for these unmissable live performances, Wave Racer will be debuting his latest singles live alongside all his classics – with a couple surprises thrown in. Taking place at The Lansdowne in Eora/Sydney on September 9 (supported by Micra and Tasker) and The Northcote in Naarm/Melbourne on September 16 (supported by Micra and Zeal), tickets are on sale now.

To Stop From Falling Off The Earth, available now for pre-order both digitally and on blue vinyl, is a striking, audacious sonic departure for the Sydney-turned-Melbourne-based electronic producer. Across eleven tracks, it seamlessly blends together the sugar-rush of his signature ecstatic 64-bit production with his love of quirk-driven pop – and, in a first, Tom’s own voice – to tell a story of overcoming anxiety, depression, and isolation. His tongue-in-cheek sensibilities keep Wave Racer’s trademark bubbliness in the mix, even as the album tackles bigger demons.

Inspired by The 1975‘s artful balance of irony, sincerity and observational story-telling, Tom reveals more of himself than ever before on To Stop From Falling Off The Earth – all with a signature self-awareness that never takes itself too seriously. The result is vulnerable, self-deprecating pop layered deeply with electronic embarkations; equal parts playful and introspective, light and dark, and an assured re-introduction to the juggernaut talent that is Wave Racer.

In retrospect, Purcell sees his anxieties bubbling up since first finding success as a 21-year-old, when he uploaded tracks ‘Rock U Tonite’ and ‘Stoopid’ to SoundCloud on a whim under the name Wave Racer — an ode to a Nintendo 64 classic that captured the songs’ sunny, pixelated optimism.

Soon after, he was touring non-stop internationally and was considered a leading producer of ‘future bass’, an electronica genre trading in nostalgia, 808s and twinkling, hyper-speed beats. He won praise from Skrillex, Porter Robinson and Flume, remixing the latter as well as the likes of Foster The People and Tkay Maidza.

“I don’t think I was ready for any of that,” he says. ”I’m normally very cautious with the decisions that I make… I thought I was managing the attention at the time but I wasn’t coping very healthily. I was so worried about how people were going to perceive me if I made one wrong step. It was a recipe for anxiety.”

In 2019, Wave Racer returned with ‘AUTO’, his first original release since 2015 EP Flash Drive — and his first with new label Astral People Recordings, marking their first release. A glitchy, vocoder-infused meta-pop ballad, the song sees Purcell fight through the mechanical expectations to constantly release music and play the role of a party-starting DJ.

Soon after, he released collaborative tracks ‘Summer Rain’ with triple j favourite Kwame, ‘This N That’ with LunchMoney Lewis and the sonic rush of ‘Higher’, co-produced by PC Music’s Danny L Harle (Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama).

ALT ROCK ICONS SPILLAGE DIG DEEP INTO GRUNGE ROOTS WITH NEW SINGLE "UNAWARES"

ALT ROCK ICONS SPILLAGE DIG DEEP INTO GRUNGE ROOTS WITH NEW SINGLE “UNAWARES”

by the partae July 29, 2021
written by the partae

From a time before the internet, rose a legendary group of Brisbane alt rockers named Spillage. Since reuniting and releasing “You Said No” earlier this year, Spillage release the second single  “Unawares”, from their forthcoming album. “Unawares” sees the band really return to those grunge/punk sounds that made them so beloved, while still maintaining a heavy sense of modernity.

Recorded at the Blackbox Studios in Brisbane with the help of producer Jeff Lovejoy with  mastering from  Matthew Gray.  Band member Sam de Pasquale describes the songs meaning as, “It’s about living a life that you thought was fun at first but was actually bringing you down. Then making a decision and putting in the hard yards to change. You are then free to explore everything that this big, beautiful world has to offer – good and bad”. The band says, “We want fans to rock out and be taken away – like good music can do.”

Knowing each other for over 30 years, Spillage were playing to (almost) packed houses in Brisbane through the 90s. One night they gave their leader Sam some money to buy kebabs and they never saw him again. Until 20-odd years later he reappears and reforms the band and they write a whole bunch of new, grungy rock and roll songs.

“THAT’S LIFE HONEY”

“Boy Scouts’ Taylor Vick makes music that thrives on intimacy” – San Francisco Chronicle

“Her music is defined by its warm tenderness—twangy guitars, cooing vocals, supportive keys—but she doesn’t necessarily want to be your caretaker.” – Paste

“Though Boy Scouts’ backing tracks are hazy and dreamlike, calling to mind tour mate Jay Som, Vick’s writing is direct, sharp, more bee-sting than butterfly.” – Pitchfork

Oakland, CA’s Boy Scouts aka Taylor Vick has announced her new album Wayfinder today. The follow-up to the acclaimed 2019 album Free Company, Wayfinder has a warm, expansive style that recalls the raw punctures of artists like Lucinda Williams and Alex G with Vick once again showing herself to be a fearless seeker, shedding light on the unanswerable.

The first new song from the record is the wry “That’s Life Honey,” a fantasy of engineering a painless existence that takes inspiration from George Saunders’ short stories. Directed by Jake Nokovic, watch Taylor take the song out on the water in the track’s new video here – https://youtu.be/3DFC3fBxhl0

“This song is about trying to make light of a shitty situation,” Vick explains. “Having a circumstance that sucks, like wanting to go to therapy but you can’t afford it, and fantasising about a world where you could get a chip implanted or have some surgery that rewires your brain and resolves you from whatever problems you have. This song is mostly my attempt at writing a tragicomedy, combined with true experiences of figuring out how to open up to people.”

Working once again with longtime collaborator Stephen Steinbrink, Wayfinder was recorded in Anacortes, Washington at The Unknown. Working slowly, they invited a roster of collaborators to join them over time, in person and over email, including Vick’s brother Travis and Jay Som’s Melina Duterte. The effects of working in a new space and with more people can be heard across the bold, assured Wayfinder, which takes place across a wider scale than Vick’s prior work. Strands of slide guitar, organ, and strings ring under her affable, expressive voice, bolstering layers and layers of harmony.

Vick found the title to Wayfinder in Sallie Tisdale’s book Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them): A Practical Perspective on Death and Dying. The word prompted her reflection on the ways that music has, throughout her life, illuminated the path ahead. “For my whole life, music has been a crucial part of my identity and how I relate to the world,” Vick says. “The act of making music has been my wayfinder during the past year.”
