What is your name and role within Zoo Trippin?

Tony Casa, I am the singer and manager of Zoo Trippin’.

How did you start?

I started this band with Lynn Roose III after playing with a few different acts over the years. Some including acts that had members that play with us now.

Where are you based?

THE Columbus, OH. Our love.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

What we used to do is jam until something felt good, then iron out the details and different parts. Then we would go into the studio and add featured artists from time to time. Often a member will have a song in mind, at least the skeleton of a song, and present it to the band. If it works, everyone writes their parts. As for the lyrics, I would normally listen to the music that the gang is playing, and let it paint an image in my mind. Then I would try to capture the image i’m seeing in my head in words.

This whole process was changed for the most part during the writing and recording of our latest album. “Purple” due out on June 24th is our 4th coming release, but our first full length album. It’s also our first concept album. But unlike most concept albums, where the concept is mostly based around the lyrical content, we wanted to go a step further. Sure there’s lyrics throughout the album that ties together to form a bigger, connected picture or story. But Lynn found a way to embrace Chromesthesia. This is a thing few people have that makes them see color in sound. So Lynn found someone from the past who developed a formula or scale to show what notes were what colors. So when writing these new songs for this new album, we couldn’t even use certain keys. The notes and keys used were comprised of blue, red, and purple notes. It’s something Lynn put a lot of time into researching and executing

What are you working on right now?

Right now we are working on our tour stops in promotion for our upcoming album “Purple”. Including our release party which falls on the same day as our 6th annual After Comfest Bash. We are also in production on some b-sides tracks, some festivals that we are playing and planning, music videos, a couple of side projects, training a new guitarist, and working on our documentary(being filmed by Tiera D. Photography).

What is your gear setup?

We can operate as small as a stripped down acoustic two piece, to a full blow production with all the bells and whistles. By bells and whistles I mean, the full band(two guitars, drums, bass), plus keys, horn section, back up singers, MC’s, strings, and everything in between. Although the band normally writes/performs as a 5 piece, we enjoy featuring other players flavors. Like Gorillaz in the early days.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

We all have different things we enjoy outside of music. I feel it would be weird as hell if we didn’t. I personally am a big fan of movies, camping, comedy, kayaking, and what not. I know Austin likes motorcycles and working on cars. Drew is a big foodie. Lynn likes trying to put his fingers in my butt. And Steve likes sports.

How would you describe your music genre?

High octane Blues/Rock-Funk/Hop.

Do you know any music theory?

Nope. I can barely speak the language. Lynn speaks that language well and the other members have some good knowledge of it. To me, that shit may as well be Latin. I really should learn theory. It can only help.

What are your plans for the future?

World domination. Trying currently to get a good team of deck hands together. We need management(mostly tour management), we need a booking agent, a publicists, and more promoters. All these things take away from the time we could be writing, rehearsing, recording, making music videos, doing interviews/podcasts, playing shows, and maybe sleeping if we’re lucky.

How did you get into music?

I got into it on accident. I always had musician friends, but I was trying a different approach to performance arts. I was a thespian in my early years. Then after high school I decided I was going to cheat my way onto the silver screen by doing stand up comedy.  I was terrible at stand up, so I started rocking faces. Turns out I’m pretty good at that.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m currently listening to ‘Living Legend’ by Murs on Spotify. Also are you looking in my window or something. How did you know I was listening to music??

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Dylon, Dylon, Dylon, Dylon, and Dylon! (jk that’s a Chappell quote). I’d have to say Jack White, Danger Mouse, Eugene Hutz, Gorillaz, and James Brown

When are you playing next?

Columbus Arts Fest on June 9th! Then we have a huge album release show at our 6th annual After Comfest Bash at Park Street Saloon on June 24th!
