What is your name and role within TV Heads?
My name is Angelica Tavella, and I play guitar, keys/electronics, and sing.
How did you start?
Sean (our other singer/guitarist) and I were touring a lot together with our solo projects Nyx (me) and Ave Grave (Sean). We started playing more and more on each other’s music, and when we moved to LA we decided to just combine forces and make TV Heads. Vince, our childhood friend and long time musical collaborator hopped on the bass soon after, and Jessica joined us for a tour in Summer 2016 and has been with us ever since. Prior to that, Vince and I would switch off on drums.
Where are you based?
Half of us are in Los Angeles, and half in Long Beach.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Usually Sean or I bring the skeleton of a song to the band, or just a part of song and from there we try to flesh it out.
What are you working on right now?
We’re in the middle of writing a shit ton for our upcoming full length. We also are just wrapping up the recording and music video for our first single off the album called “Devotional”. Jon Nunez from the band Torche is doing our record for us, and an awesome friend and musical collaborator Tim Oakley is doing the video.
What is your gear setup?
Drums, bass, two guitars, and I have a station running Ableton Live, and use the Ableton Push as a controller, and then we also have a midi controller wired over to Sean that is also connected to the same Ableton Live Set. I also often have a Moog Mother 32 or Korg Volca Keys running through my setup.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
We hike a lot, hang out with friends, paint, but mostly like getting nerdy about music. We also do a lot of music-related things that aren’t the band. I do events for Ableton, and Vince help run a music festival in Long Beach called Music Tastes Good. Sean does film scoring and composting, and Jess is the assistant to a film composer, so we all have tons of music influences and inspiration to draw from. Jess is also a crazy long-distance bike rider and does wood burnings.
How would you describe your music genre?
A steady diet of post-punk riffs, raw vocals, and electro textures.
Do you know any music theory?
We all know a little bit, but that’s not how we write or communicate.
What are your plans for the future?
We have a badass 3 week tour coming up this Summer that we’re really looking forward to, as well as the release of the “Devotional” single and music video. After the tour, we’re playing Music Tastes Good festival in Long Beach on Sept. 29th alongside some of our favorite bands Ween, Of Montreal, Broncho, Ride, and Vinyl Williams. Besides that just tons of writing until we have a beautiful record to share with the world.
How did you get into music?
We all started as kids. Funnily enough, Sean and I both developed a lot of musical skills playing at our small-town churches. I started on drums, and have been playing with Vince for most of my life. The three of us have been in multiple bands, projects, and similar musical circles for 10+ years. Jessica grew up playing in punk and ska bands in Las Vegas. She’s way more hardcore than us country bumpkin.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Personally I’ve been listening to a lot of King Woman, Torche, Sunn O, Suzanne Ciani, Torche, Bonobo and lots more!
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
I’d say 5 artists that are representative of the 4 of us are probably Ween, John Frusciante, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, and RX Bandits.
When are you playing next?
Our Socal tour kickoff shows are 7/14 in Long Beach (Alex’s Bar) and 7/19 in Los Angeles (Resident). Then we have 15 shows following those two that you can find here: http://www.tvheadsmusic.com/tour-dates/
Please feel free to include any extra info.
Keep and eye out for upcoming music and come say hi on our summer tour! Keep fighting the good fight, even when it seems like the world is going down the shitter.
